With 900 people online, there's not much that I can do to make the server not timeout or slow load like it was tonight.

We pay a considerable amount of money each month for a dedicated server and right now we are upgrading to a new, even bigger one (which hopefully will be ready soon).

But as of today, you will not be able to view the forum unless you are registered and logged in. Tonight there was over 500 guests online and all that refreshing constantly just overloads the server.

So for now, guests will get an error message if they try to view the forum and will need to login (or register if they are new) to be able to read the site.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

great, now that they have to register to see it, they'll post more, but you have to take the good with the bad. It's gonna be a hurricane.

It has gone out like clockwork at the end of the last two games.

Umm.. yeah, I think I just explained why in the original post.

Not many servers exist that can handle 900 users on this software.

We pay nearly $300/month for the server we have now and we are getting an even bigger one.

But taking out the guests will take away 100's of the users and should make it work fine until then.

I understand why and applaud it...

What I don't understand is why are there still a whole bunch of guests listed this morning...:wtf

I believe it lists you as guest in the index screen the moment you are on the (new) login screen. There are no guest in the forums themselves.

Well now that the guests can't view the forums, it should be okay. But there's a point of not being able to control it -- this software isn't built to handle 1000 users.

Lithium is what Sony's using nowday's. I think it's expensive.

Have you considered selling ad's to support the operational costs? Or is that a legal mess?

The forum has grown so much from last playoffs to this playoffs. So if the trend continues eventually we will have to get a new software (which is a huge hassle) but hopefully the upgrade to the new server can put that off for a while (year or more?).

Ads suck. I'm trying to avoid that.

Ads suck. I'm trying to avoid that.Running large forums is a huge hassle. I never realized how much until I started reading upon it. The current software is really nice from a user point of view (and because Kori's setup is very liberal) but has problems when it reaches a certain size. But then again so have all the sotwares in this price range.

One of the reason we are moving is to improve the performance and to have a clear upgrade path. But there's a point in that path where you start seting up multiple synchronized servers with heavily modified/customized software. That sort of thing doesn't make sense if it's not a commercial operation.

Just for your info a forum is concidered large when it has a million posts or more - we're at 943.000+

Edit: I don't know why I quoted you Kori, this info is more for everybody else. You already know this :lol

No, they can only see the index. When they click to go to a thread, they get an error message saying they have to register.

I think I was one of the guilty parties. I’m a long time guest, 2+ years of lurking around Spurscentral without a becoming a member. I’ve never been much into posting, but this is "the site" for Spurs info and that’s what has kept me coming back over the years. Anyway…I’m glad I finally registered and see you on the boards.

Oh wait I found the problem...

Lifts server lid... "some of the mice are taking smoke breaks during the game"... reports a mouse supervisor.
