We cannot keep playing defense like we have and expect to win.

We can't run people baseline anymore cuz Pop has all our bigs on the bench. Tim has been a good dude since he was drafted, but know is the time to get IGNANT and let pop know (privately) that he can't guard the paint alone for two more games and expect to advance. And the announcers are annoying me when they say this is not traditional Spurs defense... Hell, the line up isn't traditional what do you expect! Let Dirk score like Amare last year! At least we won't keep committing and 1's on the mavs perimeter players all night long!

How long did it take Pop to adjust the Spurs' game in the Kings series??

Oh the irony.

Pop is shunning defense like it's an allergy in this series.

Although this was a win, I was disgusted with the numerous layups and dunks.

especially if Duncan is pulled away from the basket, Dallas has been eating the middle up!!!

I had wondered why the Spurs would not try to employ a zone to slow down the drives to the basket?

I fear that Pop will continue his small ball next game!

i don't understand why rasho and nazr aren't being used. dirk, dampier, and diop aren't lightning speed guys either. make them work for the jump shot. we're champs. we shouldn't be playing into their game. nick shouldn't suit up for another game, and pop needs to use beno. i'd start tony, beno, bruce, tim, and nazr next game.

As I said in the game blog: It makes me sick that Pop is letting AJ dictate the tempo and the Spurs game planning (or lack of). When in the past 10 years have we ever been without two 7 footers clogging the lane? Our defense has always been dependent on those two guys in the lane shutting it down, be it Duncan and Robinson, or Duncan and Rasho/Nazr. Nothing else seems to be working right now, so why not fucking try it at least? Go with what got us here...

I don't think Pop will change the scheme this late into the series. Hell, we lost three in a row and he didn't change. It's a shame too, because this is not the Spurs team we saw during the season.

Actually the D didn't look too bad last night, when the Spurs weren't switching willy-nilly. The Spurs didn't switch when they built a lead, and then it came crashing down when the Spurs started switching again.

Wouldn't mind see a little zone either.

It wasnt so much the defense last night as it was the rebounding. Every time Tim came over to help on anybody driving down the lane it may have resulted in a missed shot, but it didnt matter when Diop or Dampier were behind everything to pick it up. We need another big in there to allow Duncan to be a shotblocker and force the Mavs to become jumpshooters. And Robert Horry doesnt count as a big man, I'd rather not see him in the game until theres under 30 seconds left.

How's that traditional game working out for Detroit right about now?

You think the NBA might have sent out a memo; Small Ball or Else?

EVERY team still standing is playing this style. It is not a coincidence. Evolve or die.

I miss the lock-down D; the funneling, the blocks; but THE NBA DOESN'T! Defense used to win championships; it appears that has literally changed overnight.

They'll just attack the zone like Finely did when Dallas went zone late in the game.

Pop is staying with small ball, there's no changing. If Duncan goes on Howard, Howard will most likely be away from the basket - as he was many times last night. Also, once the Spurs goes big, what's not to stop Avery Johnson from taking out Diop or Dampier and place in Stackhouse, Terry or Harris.

Speed is what is hurting the Spurs, Terry's jumper from the right side - which appears to be money everytime. If the Mavs were shooting terrible from the outside, OK - force them to go inside and try for a layup but the Mavs have been shooting well from the outside.

Last I checked, the Spurs won game 1 of that series by 30 points. As the centers' minutes have diminished, the wins are increasingly harder and harder to come by. If the Spurs played the small lineup last season, they did it sparingly, and they still managed to win against two or three really good offenses.

I agree. We have just about run out of time for waiting around for what we are doing to work. If we wait much longer, we can make some adjustments over the summer.
