Holts checks into treatment center
Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs chairman Peter Holt said Monday that he has entered an alcohol-treatment center after a relapse of the disease that he has been battling for much of his adult life.

In a statement released through the team, Holt, 55, said he checked into a residential facility last Monday at the request of his family. He said he will remain there for an unspecified period.

"I am embarrassed by this relapse, and I apologize to my family, my friends, my business colleagues and to the entire community,'' he said in the statement. "But, I am committed to regaining sobriety and maintaining it -- one day at a time."

Holt, a decorated Vietnam veteran and one of the nation's leading heavy-equipment dealers, said that he received treatment for alcoholism in the 1980s and that he was able to stay sober for many years until his recent relapse.

"I ask for your support and prayers, and your patience," he said. "This relapse just drives home the point to me that I have to battle this disease every waking minute."

Holt said that his public position in San Antonio and Texas led him to issue the statement. In addition to his high profile in the city, he is a recent appointee to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

He has led the Spurs ownership group since 1996. During that time the team has won two NBA championships, the second coming in the 2002-03 season.

This is fun! I think I'll go read some of Obstructed's posts. They're a little more objective.

Besides, a photoshop of a guy dry humping on the dancefloor is nowhere near the level of making fun of someone's life-threatening MEDICAL CONDITION.

Alcoholism is a weakness, not a disease. It's not a condition. Cirrhosis of the liver is a condition.

Q. Is Alcoholism a Disease?
from National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

A.
Yes. Alcoholism is a chronic, often progressive disease with symptoms that include a strong need to drink despite negative consequences, such as serious job or health problems. Like many other diseases, it has a generally predictable course, has recognized symptoms, and is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors that are being increasingly well defined. (See also Alcohol Alert No. 30: Diagnostic Criteria for Alcohol Abuse and Dependence.)

There's a lot of sources that say it isn't, and a lot of sources that say that it is. Either way, it's a serious condition with serious consequences to sufferers families and their health, quite significantly moreso than some billionaire with a big mouth and a bad haircut. Not even a close comparison that could justify ridicule.

Alcoholism is a weakness, not a disease. It's not a condition. Cirrhosis of the liver is a condition.

Talking out your ass again, hey Shanks?

The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence defines alcoholism this way:

"Alcoholism is a primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychological, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortion in thinking, most notably denial."
