View Full Version : Found Porn on the Office Computer

Me and the worker monkeys have access to the same computer. There's a general user account and then a manager account where I keep office documents, etc. Usually I just use the general account when I surf the web since it's often already logged on. You know how when you start typing a web address the browser will list all the sites that begin with the letter to give you a short cut? Well when I typed in the "S" in spurstalk the browser history handed me a list of URLs that from the looks of it have some x-rated material.

First off, I'm computer illiterate so can someone tell me how I can maybe find a time stamp on some of this stuff so I narrow down my suspect list. Second, how would anyone recommend handling this situation?

Go to start menu and then go to SEARCH
for files or folders then all files and folders. Just type in cookies and everything will come up with times and dates and possibly the user who was logged in.

at the top of your browser hit "go" then hit "history"

It's pretty self explanatory from there

This is really weird. I did what SA butta said. The cookies are only listing innocent stuff like yahoo, hotmail, etc. And when I click on the drop menu to show the history it only lists the same stuff. But when I actually type in a single letter the browser lists these long addresses have porn in them. Is there any possible explanation for this?

The history only logs sites visited for a certain number of days, but sometimes the address bar will retain addresses longer than that.

Can you narrow it down to users of that specific set (computer)?

Well, you know how much porn used to be accessed (and printed) in the lab? Once we put in the individual log-ins/accounts, it cleared right up. Maybe it's time to get set up with individual accounts for the worker monkeys, or limit comp access to work related material only. Sucks, but you don't want porn found on your office computer (and it is yours), because that is one of the few things you could actually get fired for.

Also, maybe time to individually review with everyone what is appropriate usage and what is not without laying blame, but making sure that everyone knows you will be monitoring usage.

Well, in terms of the time frame there would have been six of my workers that it could have been. Two of them have computer science backgrounds so I tend to think that they wouldn't leave any traces, and two more are uber-religious girls who probably aren't interested in "mature ladies". The two remaining suspects are equally likely. The other possibility that crossed my mind was that someone left the computer on overnight (it's happened before) and the cleaning crew had access to it as well.

I was a Quality Assurance monitor and one time we recorded a call from a rep and he was on a penis enhancement site during the call doing resreach. His female supervisor had to talk to him about it

If they are anything like the cleaning crew here they are probably the guilty party. They have been know to steal food out of the refrigerators and items off peoples desks.

OK, here's what I've decided. I've cleared the autocomplete and other records. I'll type up a note to the worker monkeys telling them at inappropriate material was found on the computer, and since I can't narrow it down to a single suspect that I'm issuing this office wide warning. If anything is found in the future I will notify my superiors and tech support to attempt to find the guilty party who will be immediately terminated. Should we fail to find that person then all student access to the computer will cease. I'm also going to talk our tech support person regarding possibly eliminating the general user account in favor of individual ones.

Since they cleared the history and the cookies there's no simple way to tell who was on the computer, the fact that everyone logs on under the same user-name only complicates things. I'd assign everyone a user-name and a password and post that the computer will log keys, these loggers are cheap, undetectable and they will show you everything that is typed over your 'public' computer.
