http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untitled_Batman_Begins_Sequel

Upon the successful reboot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reboot_%28continuity%29) of the Batman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman) film franchise by the 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005) film Batman Begins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Begins), an untitled sequel to the film has been commissioned for a 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_in_film) release. So far, Christian Bale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Bale), Michael Caine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Caine), Gary Oldman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Oldman) and Morgan Freeman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_Freeman) have been confirmed to reprise their roles from the previous film (Bruce Wayne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Wayne), Alfred Pennyworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Pennyworth), James Gordon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Gordon_%28comics%29) and Lucius Fox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Fox) respectively). It will be directed by Christopher Nolan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Nolan).

Rumored titles include: Batman Continues, Batman Strikes, Batman Attacks, Batman: Haunted Knight, Batman Escalation, & Batman II.

Expected Plot

Spoiler warning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Spoiler_warning): Plot and/or ending details follow.
There is a lot of speculation that the plot will be based on the graphic novel series Batman: The Long Halloween (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_The_Long_Halloween) and the Joker's origin from Batman: The Killing Joke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_The_Killing_Joke). Since The Long Halloween features mobster Carmine Falcone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine_Falcone) prominently, it is possible that actor Tom Wilkinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Wilkinson) might make a return appearance, since his character was not killed off in Batman Begins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Begins). A possible reprise of The Scarecrow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarecrow_%28comics%29) by Cillian Murphy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cillian_Murphy) is not expected to be in this film, although Murphy may return for another installment in the future.

New Characters

It is expected that this film will feature the Joker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_%28comics%29) as the main villain, given the ending of the first film. Dozens of actors have been mentioned as possible candidates for the role including: Adrien Brody (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrien_Brody), Lachy Hulme (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lachy_Hulme), Paul Bettany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bettany), Ralph Fiennes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Fiennes), David Bowie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie), Hugo Weaving (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Weaving), Jude Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jude_Law), Johnny Depp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Depp), Christopher Eccleston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Eccleston), Tim Roth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Roth), Daniel Day-Lewis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Day-Lewis), Sean Penn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Penn), and Crispin Glover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crispin_Glover)[1] (http://www.batman-on-film.com/), however, has recently stated that he has not been considered at all, while Academy Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award) winner Brody is the only one that expresses interest in the role.

Some fans fear that this new Joker may not be given an origin due to the fact that he is already leaving behind Joker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker) cards. It is also assumed by some that he was one of the many criminally insane who escaped Arkham Asylum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkham_Asylum) at the end of the movie. Though little to nothing about the character has been confirmed.

Harvey Dent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Dent) is expected to to be introduced as well to prepare for the introduction of his murderous alter ego Two-Face in the third film. Actors rumoured for the role include: Jake Gyllenhaal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Gyllenhaal), Terrence Howard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrence_Howard), Josh Lucas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Lucas), Ray Liotta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Liotta), Liev Schreiber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liev_Schreiber) & Denzel Washington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denzel_Washington). The Penguin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Penguin) and Black Mask (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Mask_%28comics%29) have also been rumoured to have a part in the film, with Bob Hoskins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Hoskins) and Oscar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Awards)-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Seymour_Hoffman) being rumored for the former role. It is believed that Hoskins is also being considered as the gangster "Boss" Moroni, who throws the acid into Dent's face, thus sparking his transformation to Two-Face. However, in Goyers' script treatment, Joker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_%28comics%29) is the one who scars Dent, and this version will most likely make it to the silver screen. Known character actor Brad Dourif (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Dourif) is also being considered to portray Dr. Arkham, the man who founds (and is later institutionalized in) Arkham Asylum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkham_Asylum). There is also talk that Alberto Falcone, Carmine Falcone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine_Falcone)'s son who becomes the Holiday Killer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holiday_%28comics%29) will be involved. Although Gyllenhal seems to be unpopular for the role of Dent, there is a possibility that he might play Alberto, since he loves the comics and wants to avoid typecasting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typecasting) after the huge success of Brokeback Mountain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brokeback_Mountain).

Due to fan reaction of Katie Holmes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katie_Holmes)' character, Rachel Dawes, there is a rumor that the character might be written out of the series to make way for a new female lead, possibly Vicki Vale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicki_Vale) or Selina Kyle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selina_Kyle). Since Holmes is committed to other projects and her marriage with Tom Cruise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Cruise) and her pregnancy, this could be true. It has also been rumoured that The O.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_O.C.) star Mischa Barton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mischa_Barton) will have the role of Bruce Wayne's new love interest.

Nolan has stated that Robin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_%28comics%29) will not be in any of the sequels, likely because his apperances in the two films of the Joel Schumacher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joel_Schumacher) continuity were considered to be a factor in the franchise's decline, although Nolan has stated the reason is "at the time we are portraying Batman (in his early to mid-twenties), Dick Grayson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Grayson) is a little boy at this point."

Batman: Year One by Frank Miller is a good place to start. It was written in the eighties and was the first in-depth modern telling of the early Batman story that was re-imagined by the Batman Begins movie . You should be able to find it at Amazon as a trade paperback.
