As much as I would love to see it, I think he is going to end up about 10 short of Bonds. Its too bad that he can't play the Royals for the rest of the season, then he would break the record by Labor Day.

I dont think so.

Albert is a pretty streaky homerun hitter.

Great hitter overall, but a very streaky homerrun hitter.

I predict he finishes with about 65 homers.

8 short.

It would be great if he passed him.

A legit player, doing it legit.

Guarantee Maris's family would like it.

Question: How do we know he's legit? HGH is undetectable. How many substances are undetectable? Nobody really knows. I'm not saying I think he's using anything, but I am saying that there's no way to know. People want to think it, and the media has crowned him the "un-Barry," but nobody really knows that.

I would be willing to bet that Pujols has done steroids in the past.

anybody watch Outside The Lines last night? It had a good point about Pujols, his homeruns, and steroids. The more home runs he hit, the higher speculation among media and fans that hes on roids. Its a shame that people would suspect him of taking steroids. It wouldnt suprise me if the steroids investigation started questioning him.

Agreed. And it's too bad, too. I like the guy. I have no doubt he's classy. But I don't know that he's clean.

you people are unreal.

The guy isn't big.

He has big legs, but thats it.

SO now anyone that hits lots of homeruns is "on roids" ?

Good god.

Pujols is 6'3, 225 lbs.

Barry Bonds is 6'2, 228.

Size is not the only indicator of steroid use. Strength is the primary indicator. Perfomance enhancers speed up your recovery time, enabling you to build strength faster and more efficiently (through grueling workouts, of course. you don't just get big and strong if you take steroids). I think it's naive to assume that he is not on steroids simply because he is the un-Barry. The bottom line is that we simply don't know.

You're missing the point. I never said I even thought he was on steroids, I'm just saying that painting him as the anti-Barry like the media is doing is ludicrous because (now get this)

WE DON'T KNOW

I don't expect that he is, I just think it's erroneous to assume that he isn't. We don't know that he isn't, which means he may be, which means that he may not be the anti-Barry (if you can follow that logic, lol... just about messed myself up with that). Alls I'm sayin'.

Karl Malone isn't the issue. Nobody suggested that he was the clean and pure anti-villain of the NBA.

Again, my only point was that he is being referred to as somebody we know is clean. We don't. I appreciate that you are defending him and that you believe that he's not on steroids. I'm not saying he is, I'm just saying that nobody knows for sure that he isn't. You don't know it, I don't know it.

If Pujols hits 18 HR in August, I'll start to get suspicious.

73 is really hard to get. Pujols has 24 HR, and its Memorial Day. That number seems eye-popping. If he kept up that pace all season, he'd hit 78. He'd have to stay on fire all season. Without pharmaceutical assistance, that kind of stamina just isn't realistic.

Yeah, because it couldn't be that hes a good hitter..

he is a great hitter, but baseball has been forever tainted. no one will be able to have a great season without suspicion.

Look at pictures of Pujols earlier in his career. He was skinny. Similar to Barry.

to me he actually looks a little smaller in the 06, but it is probably just the angle and the pose.

I'm not suspicious of Pujols taking steroids, but I do question whether he is really only 26 years old.

Regardless, the guy is scary good.

barry didn't need the juice to be one of the all time greats. he was a multiple MVP before he started looking like a mutant. 500/500 is no joke.

And yet it wasn't enough because honky McGwire got the immediate glory he thought he deserved.

Had Bonds stayed clean, maybe today despite his Cobbesque personality, people would be pointing to him as the guy who did it clean in a dirty era. His 600+ home runs (he'd still have that many w/o the juice) would be the one stat from the Steroid Era which meant something.

Instead, he's the poster boy for the Steroid Era and nobody will ever remember the legit numbers he put up before '99.

Albert Pujols was forced from Saturday's game by a strained right oblique.

Even as a non-cardinal fan, I would hate to see him be out for any amount of time. I'd like to see how great a season he can have this year.

I just want something to eclipse all this Bonds chasing Hank and the Babe nonsense we're going to have to hear all season. If Pujols staring down 73 is the focus of the 2006 season, I'm all for it.
