Sorry, couldn't figure out where is the best place for this:

Is there a thread somewhere for the admins to list known issues and collect potential new ones regarding the new server?

For example, the search utility is gone. I assume you already know about that and have plans to reinstitute it?

there's a thread called testing testing, that we used earlier for this.

You can use that thread or you can always PM me.

The Search feature is disabled temporarily. That's because it's one of the features that take up a lot of resources. The worse we have found out so far are threads with 2000+ posts (the quattro is so bad we had to prevent even access to it).

The search feature will come back (probably after tonight, when we'll get a good feeling what this new setup is capable). In the next few days we'll try to find a solution for the long threads as well.

There will be a period of introduction for this new setup, because we want to understand was causes problems and what doesn't. Then we can address those problems. That's something that was almost impossible on the previous machine.

So thanks for your help and please be patient!

Last year, the search feature was disabled during the Finals, maybe they are doing it again expecting a higher traffic tonight

Are the sigs will be available to check how the new server handles this kind of traffic?

Slomo
05-22-2006, 02:54 PM
In theory the sigs shouldn't influence the servers performance (but they did) we'll leave them on but it's going to be one of the first things we'll switch off if/when we get in trouble

Can you try and delete all your cookies manually (or if you have a probelm with that, then delete just the spurstalk.com cookies)?

I tried to log in/out with IE, FF, Netscape and Opera - and it worked fine. I tried it with two different accounts.

We'll look at the logs later today, but it sounds like a local problem.

We'll switch the Search on and off often in the next days, so if it doesn't work or the link is missing - it's us.

The database for this forum is huge, optimizing it is one problem, improving the actual code that do the search (it's really bad right now) is the second problem. We're working on both.

They are optimizing some things like the search function, etc on a mock version on the forum. When all the bugs are worked out, they'll transfer those optimizations over here.

I know there's still been some moments of lagging on and off (maybe caused by search engine bots) but over the next week or so, we'll figure everything out.

Thanks for everyone's patience.

I believe we have found the single biggest problem with the search function. If all further testing goes well, we'll apply the fix and reenable the search function sometime late night/early morning CDT time when the traffic on the forum is low.

There will be probably 60 to 90 seconds of downtime as well, I apologize for that.

@SpursWoman: thanks for the report, we'll look into it.

Besides the blazing fast search function :) the uploading of avatars from the web is fixed now.

@SpursWoman: please try it again and let me know if it still doesn't work for you.

ie I just clicked on your name and then on "find more post by TlongII" and it worked.

It works for me now too. I must have done something wrong yesterday.

We'll switch the Search on and off often in the next days, so if it doesn't work or the link is missing - it's us.
No Search for you!!! [/search nazi]

I just dont see whats so hard to fix to make spurstalk run correctly

kori has told us dozens of time how much money they spend on it, which makes it shitty yet impressive at the same time

I still think we should just do away with all the videos, they slow down everything for me

1. Make it run correctly

2. STFU

has anyone actually went to one server to another?
I have. It is a pain in the but. Things are never the same. Have to setup everything. make sure permissions are set right. Make sure things work with the new os and updates. Tranfer everything. Setup forum software transfer huge database.
Test then run with it live. It is not easy and just because you have a server company helping you they may charge you after so much time on their end to get it to work.

What's still running improperly for you? For a few days everything has been running fine without any lag.

Are you talking about videos in signatures? Are you on dialup?

Stop trying to use dial-up through your cell phone. The speed will increase.

People need to understand the videos don't have anything to do with our server. We aren't hosting the videos.

no like others whenever the spurs have a big game or playoff game, the whole thing lags bad or doesnt work at all

thats like a dozen or so times a season

That started happening toward the end of the regular season and into the playoffs because the forum was so popular.

That's why we moved to the new server.

1027 people were on during Game 7 and the forum worked fine.

This is purely cosmetic, but nearly all the sites I visit, except ST, have a logo displayed to the far left of the browser address field, the logo also shows up in the tabs of Firefox's tabbed browser.

ST shows nothing, so the browser inserts generic image of a white document image with a folded corner. bleh

ST could display the obvious Spurs spur image.

what is the hardware spec of the new ST server? (dual) CPU MHz, RAM, disk type?

We are aware of this, that feature is commonly called "favicon.ico" because that's the name of the graphic file that browsers display in the address field (google knows plenty about it if you are interested).

Slomo is working on it, graphics is his department. :)

ok, after many months of intense R&D, you have finally got the favico showing. Congrats!Actually it was just a case of me making it and saving it on the server. The display process is basically automatic - if it's there most browser show it.

It was only on the to do list, bust more important stuff was ahead of it.

But if you ask for it, then it happens (specially when it something that simple :lol )

BTW I was trying to make something more specific to SpursTalk.com, but the picture is only 16x16 pixels and a lot of stuff isn't recognizable after you shrink it to that size. But if somebody has an idea for something else, please tell me - and I'll try it out.

The orange b/g was jarring at first, but it helps it stand out.
The NBA and BBC sites have favicon with transparent b/g, while NYT and WP both have 16x16 white b/g.

Comparing all favicons, I think white is best b/g, because it offers the highest contrast (which is I why I don't like the The Club's low-contrast grey-on-grey).
An alternative would be the black spur on transparent b/g with a white halo of 1 pixel.

can't the poster's menu have an additional choice to "ignore this poster" ?

These damn Mavs trolls are a real pain to keep ignoring, takes TOO many clicks to IGNORE someone.
