I doubt you're going to pay the money for Final Cut Pro or Avid Pro DV, as they're both over 1000. There is a cheaper version for Avid, called Avid Express DV, which will run you about 300-500. Great system, and you probably won't need anything it doesn't have. The main difference between Express and Pro is the amount of audio/video levels, real time rendering, and other things that are easy to do without.

Avid also just came out with another one called Liquid, after it bought out another company. Haven't ever used it.

There are the cheaper ones like Adobe Premiere Elements, which is very user friendly (a lot of drag and drop), and it's only about 140. Good beginners software.

After Effects is more for effects and animation.

Check out the Avid/Adobe pages, and they have free trials so you can play with them and see if you're interested in them.

Dam I went to go open that ADVID program and at 45% of the install it gave me a warning window that said I need XP service pack or better. I am using someone's PC now with XP I wonder if maybe since I have not acivated windows yet if I will have problems. I went to the MicroSoft site to get Direct X or Flash Player and it would not load until I activated windows. Thank God for CNET Downloads , Just think , If I am having problems now?
I wonder what will happen when I go back to my POS pc with windows ME :lmao

pinnacle studio pro is a good program, but is also expensive. if you have newsgroup access and know how to use it, that can help.

Mouse - yeah, that last one is XPressDV.

Dude - I went to school for it, and I also work as a video editor now. Avid is easy to use, and probably the best system for it. Most professional movies are edited on some form of Avid, albeit much more expensive ones than an at home consumer will own. A consumer version is XPress DV. It is what a lot of schools use, and will run you a few hundred dollars, if you want to go that high. And then there are always Mouse's tactics.

Final Cut Pro is pretty much the same thing, just for the Apple platform. Reviews are pretty split between the two. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

If you're looking for a good program for between 100-200, I'd recommend Adobe Premiere. It's a very user friendly program - and good for a beginner.

The Pinnacle ones are good, but I'd recommend against the last one. I think it was 12? Huge stability issues, but I'm sure they'll work that kink out before the next release.

hey you ever make your own short film? Can that stuff be used to enter the Austin Film festival? Or do you need to use those huge cameras?

I was wondering since I installed a TV card yesterday If I can use that program to edit myself in a movie like Pulp Fiction? Or do I have to get permission first?

Kinda like the photo shops but this is real video.

Bro if someone comes by your house use your lawn mower should Sears get upset? I am just using something you already paid for. Look at XP and XP pro

one is 99.00 the other is 199.00 Do you really think the pro is worth the extra 100.00? I think Adobe CS is over priced.

Besides the site I use to get my stuff ? I paid to be a member so it's not like it's completely free :smokin

I will check that out today. I have a few cuts from some movies I was thinking about doing a movie montage but with Posters doing the audio. Or maybe a Fred flinstone cartoon remake but have them talking dirty,

have Fred tell welma bring me my food biotch. Have Betty call Barney a small dick midget. mix in some Dino and bam bam and it should be funny.maybe something political like that black dude hiding cash in his freezer.
you into shit like that?

I've made a bunch of little things. Nothing I still have on a computer, and nothing I've ever entered in anything. But yeah, you can definitely enter anything in a festival. There are parameters for the entries (length, genre, etc), but it doesn't matter what you shot it on or edited it on.

There's obviously a difference in quality if you shoot it on an XL2 (expensive) compared to a handheld mini-cam. But, a lot of the movies in fests are shot on mini-cams, and edited on barebones equipment.

The Drafthouse (I think only the downtown Austin one) does things from time to time, where a few groups of people are sent out, and have to have a finished movie back to them in like 24 hours. Sort of a fun contest. I'm sure they'll give you info on it if you contact them.

Also, the AFF has a lot of cool amateur seminars, viewings, etc.

I was wondering since I installed a TV card yesterday If I can use that program to edit myself in a movie like Pulp Fiction? Or do I have to get permission first?

Depends on what you're using it for. If you're going to use the footage for fun, I don't think the companies are going to waste time chasing you down. Technically, It IS copyright infringement, but they have bigger fish to fry.

Hey, I never said I had any problem with your tactic, I was just saying it was your tactic. I'm quite adept in DVD Shrink/Decrypt, myself. And there's probably a handful of people on here who have never copied a CD.

All the video programs I have on my computers, though, are legit copies. Avid, Final Cut, After Effects, Studio Pro, Photoshop, et al. But, they're free for me through work. And if they weren't, I might be going your route.

When I said Adobe Premiere, I meant Adobe Premiere Elements. I have version 2.0, which I think is the most recent one. I think it cost 120.

So if I wanted to make a 90 second video using my digital camera and it's poor quality .mov files in about 10 minutes, which of these programs would be the best?

If you don't want to spend money on them, try the trial versions.

Avid - http://www.avid.com/freedv/index.asp

Adobe Premiere Elements - http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp#p101

Vegas - http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/download/Step2.asp?DID=583

If you just want to make one video, I would use the trial, and not waste the money on a whole package.

If you're interested in doing more, and perhaps getting some software, I'd try the trials and see which one you like.

I tried Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, mainly because I had actually heard of it. I didn't see Elements in the post so I grabbed the Pro tryout. I played around with Premiere for a while, actually piecing the video together is easy enough. When I try to export a video they come out huge though. I'm just using my digital camera at the moment, and it's extremely low quality, something like 15 fps. I have an 8 second test video with no sound that comes out of Premiere as an 28.9 MB .avi, while a 4 second clip straight from my camera with sound is a 889kb .mov. At any rate I've come to the conclusion that trying to put together a 90 second video in 10 minutes with no video editing experience whatsoever was kind of a bad idea. I wanted to submit something for a little film competition, just for kicks, it's a bit late now though. Oh yeah, and I think I'll give Avid a try too, it looks interesting.

Thanks for the suggestions King.
