NEW YORK - An 8-year-old boy was arrested on homicide charges after he sneaked onto a bus which rolled forward and fatally struck a second-grader, police said Tuesday.

The boy was to be charged with criminally negligent homicide, Officer Doris Garcia said. Police were withholding his name because of his age, she said.

Amber Sadiq was crossing the street near her school when she was struck by the bus in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights. Police believe the boy was alone on the bus, Garcia said.

Investigators believe the driver got off the bus and secured it but the boy may have gotten inside through the back door, an emergency exit that can't be locked, and caused the bus to move, police spokeswoman Detective Theresa Farello said.

"She tried to run but the garbage can was in the way," said 12-year-old Kassandra Polanco, who saw the bus bearing down on the girl.

Deli worker Sam Ahmad said he saw the girl under the bus and called 911. He said he and about a dozen other men tried to lift the yellow bus to free her but it was too heavy.

Police said the girl was 8; the Department of Education said she was 7.

Some more of the "rights" crap. You can't handle anything anymore without the
legal system getting involved. You would have violated someone's rights if he had
just been picked-up by the police, taken home and punishment administered other
than through the legal system. You know at one time many matters where handled
within the community with no "ACLU" types getting involved. Like a drunk who got
thrown in jail overnight, slept it off and released the next day with a warning. Cant
happen now. You violated the drunks rights by having him jailed with no charges.
You go figure.

You have obviously not been around many children. And, er,
it was a school bus and well.....oh heck if I have to explain
everything to you, you have about the same mentality as
the 8 year old.

Why is it worth mentioning that this was a school bus. So if it is a school then they are allowing an 8 year old child to wander around vehicles unsupervised...that doesn't sound like acceptable behavior for a childs part-time guardian.

It takes about two seconds for a child to get into something or
come up missing. Almost like a wink of the eye. Go shopping with
one and you look at something, turn around and the child will be
gone. Same with having one at home and you are busy with something
in the house or outside the house and next thing something has happened. He was an eight year old. What did you do as an
eight year old. Sit around and ask "may I". I don't think so and
I can guarantee that you did things no one was aware of. So did
he obviously. Now go act like a grown up and quit acting so
offended because he wasn't surpvised.

Xray, I don't know what schools were like back in the day when you were a child, but the way the work now is that, generally speaking, 8 year olds are not allowed outdoors, or outside of a fenced in area, without a parent coming to take them out of the schools care. We do not allow 8 year old children to wander around a parking lot without someone watching them. If the parents had already checked him out, he should have been in a car, with them. Now, I don't know if youre usually this ignorant and abrasive, or if the nursing home stopped doing the Andy Griffith marathon on Wednesday mornings, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt. But think a second before you speak because I'm pretty sure that there are no reasonable scenarios for an 8 year old to be running around a parking lot by himself. Good day sir.

Well obviously there was some "scenario" for him to be running
around a parking lot by himself. If that be the case. It
could be that they were picking-up students or letting them
off buses and the driver was busy taking care of something
else and the Teachers who normally monitor the loading/
unloading of the buses was watching other children. And
for your edification and enlightenment, not all schools are
run like those you are familiar with. And about me being
abrasive, so what, you aren't exactly the "kind gentle person". Good day to you also, sir. One other little thought.
It could be he was already on the bus, maybe even with
other children, and thought to be under someones
supervision. But for some reason the driver had to get
off the bus, maybe even helping a handicapped child off,
and had set the hand brake, being a good driver and not
wanting the bus to roll and the eight year old walked to
the front of the bus, released the handbrake and walla,
it struck another child. Now that is just one of the
things that could have happened. Now have that good
day.

Well, I suppose one difference in the schools I am used to, and whatever kind you may have attended, put different levels of stress on reading comprehension. The article at the beginning of the page makes it obvious that the child snuck onto the bus, "An 8-year-old boy was arrested on homicide charges after he sneaked onto a bus..."
It helps to read an article clearly before making claims about what happened, it will usually provide certain "clues" as the the nature of the incident. Now, I am not saying this kid is not at all to blame, what he did was stupid...but I highly doubt that, at 8 years old, he had enough working knowledge of the schoolbus to know that he was going to make it start rolling forward...but that is just my opinion. I wasn't 100% serious when I said that whoever was watching him needs to be put in jail, but they sure deserve a hefty lawsuit in the very least.

Okay, I will give you your due. I had forgotten he had "sneaked" onto
the school bus. But believe me he and any other eight year olds
knows about vehicles. The watch every move the adults make. Do
you think he just released the brake to see what would happen. Do
you know I still remeber when I was a kid, at church, and got in my
Dad's pickup and pushed down on the clutch and the truck rolled
forward. I was really impressed, I made a car move without the
motor running. Now I have another question for you. Why wasn't
the vehicle in gear where it couldn't roll. Was the vehicle running.
Or was it shut down. All they say it was secured. Now they also
say that he must have gotten in thru the emergency exit on the
rear of the bus. How would an eight year old know how to work
that door? Lots of questions and you and I have no answers.
It is just going back to original thought on the post. Eight year
old kids don'e belong in court on a charge such as this. And in
some cases, accidents do happen, no one is to blame. Quit
hunting for a goat.
