Dampier is the worst of all the bigs to play in this series. Diop might have a chance in short minutes. Thank God we got Griffin to guard Marion.

The point is that instead of saying 'oh shit, we gotta ditch our system for an entire series to try to match up', D'Antoni said 'we're going to play our way and see if you can beat us.'

I remember when Pop used to say the same.

K-State Spur

Actually, you can make an argument that they play even a smaller, quicker line-up that Dallas did in the last series. Not to say this will continue this way, but Dallas may have to match them with an even smaller line-up to adjust.

Aggie Hoopsfan

And I'll also argue we beat a Phoenix team similarly built last year playing *gasp* two seven footers. But hey, that four guards thing worked out great for us against Dallas.

Anyone know Tim and Pop's tee time this morning?

Pop was already saying last season, paraphrased, "we can run and gun, we can slow-down, we can whatever game you want to play" It's a boast that the Spurs are good at different styles and paces of game,

... which is OK when you can do it and win, but that approach always seemed somewhat weird to me.

Why can't the Spurs control the game, ever?, in the way how the Spurs want, rather than always adapting to what the other team is doing?

vs Mavs, I think the problem with the Spurs playing 2 bigs was that the non-Tim big wasn't scoring, wasn't defending, wasn't rebounding in way that a serviceable big should do. ie, Spurs' bigs next to Tim just suck.

Spurs playing big vs Mavs small would have had disadvantages which just weren't offset by the Spurs bigs. ie, Spurs non-Tim bigs suck. aka, a weak front line.

The Beauty of our defeat to Dallas is that we don't really truely know how our starting really would have fared. It's a genius move by pop. He stuck with small ball so long that it would have been stupid to change it so late.

Rack the Pop.

We could have done the same by posting them up time and again in the lane and killing their shorter players.

The Spurs only played 'two bigs' for a grand total of 27 minutes, that's *27* minutes, the entire series. How can you even make that judgment?

Further, what makes you think that Nazr/Rasho couldn't have matched the incredibly meager contributions of Robert Horry in that series?

The Better Team will prevail in 7 games, duh.

I wonder if there will be any bitching by the teams, coaches, commentators about the refs in this series like there was in the Spurs/Mavs series. Or will the refereeing magically become transparent now that the Spurs are eliminated?

Aggie Hoopsfan

Spurs defense:

Regular season: 88 PPG

Regular season against the 'small ball teams' - Phoenix and Dallas: 93.8 PPG (5-3 record for the Spurs)

Dallas series: 110 PPG (3-4 record)

Rack nothing.

Firts: if you believe Pop did the right thing by not playing a center and playing small ball. Then I can say Pop is responsible for getting two crappy, useless centers that didn't do anything to help the team in the most important series of the year. Why get players if they aren't good enough to hit the floor in the playoffs?

Or you can say Pop screwed up by playing small ball and trying to match up with the Mavs and ended up losing anyways. Either way Pop messed up by either playing a style that wasn't best suited for the team he built or getting players that weren't good enough for the only style of play that he thought had a chance to beat Dallas. Either way Pop messed up. So rack nothing.

What did Pop adjust to? The only adjustment we made for Phoenix was breaking out more in transition, and having two bigs in there rebounding made that possible.

That, and telling guys to step out of the way, let Amare dunk it, and not give up three point plays.

Typical Tpark. Pop could give your mom a dirty sanchez and you'd be there waiting when he got done to slap him on the ass and tell him good game.

rebounding is not a strong suit for suns usally

I don't have the numbers for this cuz I'm far too lazy to look it up, but I believe the Suns were one of the top defenseive rebounding teams in the NBA this year. Which makes sense, when you think about it, because what team would be suicidal enough to try and chase a loose ball to get another possession when Bell or Marion are streaking down the floor wide open for a pass and layup? Teams will sacrifice extra possession for the sake of transition defense.

Another point: it's amazing how close to robotic the Suns are. You can't get them down by hitting a big three or slamming a dunk on them, because as happened at least three times in the first half (such as after a big 3 from _allas, by Terry I think), the ball was immediately inbounded to Nash who instantly spotted Marion downfloor for an open layup. The only way to get into their heads is to stop them, and stopping them is damn hard. This could be a weird series, but fun to watch, for sure. Better get ready, Mav fan.

Phoenix 2005 regular season: 110.4 points scored, 103.3 points allowed
San Antonio 2005 regular season: 96.2 points scored, 88.4 points allowed

2005 WCF:
5/22/2005 SAS at Phoenix Suns 121 - 114 1 - 0
5/24/2005 SAS at Phoenix Suns 111 - 108 2 - 0
5/28/2005 SAS Phoenix Suns 102 - 92 3 - 0
5/30/2005 SAS Phoenix Suns 106 - 111 3 - 1

I don't think Dallas playing the Suns tempo is going to matter much either way. It will result in a few wins and a few losses.

Honestly, I think every game will be close enough that, no matter the score, three or four late possessions will determine the winner.

Dallas is every bit as quick and athletic as Phoenix and they are deeper (so long as Howard returns this series). Suns shoot bettre from everywhere, but Dallas has a half-dozen players who can break the Suns down off the dribble and score.

Suns struggle defensively in matchups like that.

There's no question we are the better team but like I said: it's all about the match-ups. If you've won 200 championships, 5,000 years of experience, and have 7 hall of famers -- it doesn't matter if you match up horribly against a certain team.

Dallas should go over the pick on Nash instead of switching. Make Nash drive to the paint. Harris is the best option to stay in front of Nash. Diop needs to be out there for shot blocking though Avery is being stupid here. Diaw can have that jump shot all day. Diop is Dallas's best help defender.

Not true at all. They were up 9 with 3 to go and lost it on Turnovers (Griffin, Stack X 2), poor execution of half court D, missed shots, not recognizing that making Nash drive and score two is a better option than shooting a three, and not having some other than Stackhouse on Boris on a set half court in bounds play. The pace was not the problem.

He tweaked his ankle again and was gimpy on the floor but still played. I haven't heard an update. They asked D'Antoni during the post-game and he said he didn't know what Marion's status was but that he had better be ok, they need him.

yes this is true...they said there was no fracture and will do an mri tomorrow...he should be ok, at least he walked out on his own...for marion at least, this is his second time in a week, he sprained his ankle last week in the clippers series but he came back to play...the worst of the bunch is obviously raja bell but the suns have won a game w/o him for the kobe clothesline, it's consecutive games with him absent that could pose a problem, too early to tell though, they won't know until tomorrow

edit: josh howard also walked out on crutches, fu***********k, oh well, that's the way it rolls

GO FIGURE.

You can win with dallas with only matching their atleticism.

Where is Pop's comment on athleticism, hmm?

You can win in Dallas when 3 different Mavs players make costly turnoevers in the final minute while only nurturing a 1 point lead. Where's your "mental toughness" now Avery? Did you leave it in San Antonio?

Spurs defense:

Regular season: 88 PPG

Regular season against the 'small ball teams' - Phoenix and Dallas: 93.8 PPG (5-3 record for the Spurs)

Dallas series: 110 PPG (3-4 record)

Yay for small ball!

I agree....Ive been yelling this since game one. Small ball SUCKS for the Spurs. I would have had a huge front lineup and make Dallas shoot ALL jumpers to win games. It would have slowed Dallas down big time......by having to pass it back out instead of coming inside to have a shot blocked.

I love POP, but he blew it coaching decision wise in the Mavs series. :rolleyes

What is there to fix? He doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell at beating D'Antoni at his own game. Don't forget Phoenix was cold from behind the 3G line too. If they hit those, Mavs lost Game 1 by a much larger margin than 3.

Maybe he should teach his players about how you don't turn the damn ball over when you have the lead with under a minute to play. There is no cure for pwnage. Mav Fan need to learn that just because their team beat the Spurs does not make Avery Johnson the god of coaching adjustments.

For a lot of the game, the Mavs were playing like they already won something.

The Mavs had awful transition defense. They have to sprint back after every offensive possession. I think if they fix that and stop doing those stupid switches every time, they'll be fine.

The Mavs didn't play well last night, and still should have won the game.

Anyway, remember who won game 1 in the last series? That's what I thought. Oh, btw, Suns fans were happy to see the Spurs lose, read their forum sometime.

Oh yeah. Spurs won the 1st game last series on their homecourt. Suns won their game at Mavs.

Go figure.

the suns didn't play all that well either, they shot well below their average from 3. then again, the mavs guarded the 3 line pretty well. both injuries will hurt both teams signifigantly if bell and howard are out long term. diaw had an awesome game, and he should be able to get those shots consistently being guarded by bigs.

I'm amazed at how the Suns keep winning. . .Amare's out, Kurt Thomas. . .and now Bell???

If the Spurs were short Duncan and Bowen, or Manu and Bowen, or Parker and Bowen we'd be dead but the Suns just keep on cranking.

They're really going to need Raja though if they're going to beat the Mavs. I hope he comes back despite it looking pretty bleak.

Go Suns!

I really, really don't get how that works.

It seems like if you run the Suns offense and you have Nash, you can go down to the corner and hire day laborers to fill out your lineup.

Pheonix sure has a way of making good teams appear to be stuck in the mud. They seemed more comfortable playing in Dallas than the mavs did. It makes you wonder about the future of the big man in the nba. Can the suns keep this up? I think they can.

We've gone from small ball to smaller ball.

Remember game two in the previous series? Avery Johnson knows what he is doing.

The Mavs didn't play well last night, and still should have won the game.

In Game 2 of the last series, the Mavs went small on us and tried to make the game faster because the Spurs don't play their best ball in the uptempo style. If he goes big, then the Mavs won't be able to keep up. If he wants to keep up with Phoenix he's going to have to stay small, which is a game Phoenix is much more suited for and better at than Dallas. There's no adjustment Avery can make to make the Mavs noticably better than the Suns.

Phoenix didn't play well last night either, they were cold from 3G land and they are one of the better 3G teams in the league. All the "Who won game 1 last series? Remember game 2 last series?" shit needs to stop. No two series are alike.

where was San Antonio "good ol' defense" when yielding a 20 pt lead in first half of Game7? Spurs really can't throw rocks at Mavs defense.

Spurs would be playing Suns if the Spurs had played their defense vs Mavs.

Despite playing "Suns Tempo" the Mavs were up 9 with 3 minutes to play. Over the last three minutes, the tempo did not change, in fact it probably slowed down.

What lost them the game was three vary costly turnovers (Griff, Stack, Harris), a very poor job of understanding the shot clock by Keith Van Dill, poor decision not to put Damp back in on the last possession by Phoenix and settling for jump shots at the end after layups had been there all game.

The Mavs also had gotten some good stops down the stretch in the 4th, but stopped getting them. That's what let the Suns back into the game.

Totally agree strange. The pick and roll w/ Marion, Dirk not realizing the situation and coming out on Steve, of course the last shot by Diaw was not played well at all by Stack.

This is early in the series but I feel the mavs have some really bad matchups with the suns that are equal to the matchups the spurs had with the mavs. The mavs love to shoot jumpers and with jumpers the most vulnerable part is transition defense. The suns are able exploit this part of the mavs that spurs were unable to.
The same way the spurs were forced to go small against the mavs (Finley instead of Nazr), the mavs were forced to go small against the suns. (Griffin or Van Horn instead of Diop or Dampier) I expect to see the mavs beat the suns but these matchup problems can't be underrated.

the suns want to keep the game uptempo too. the mavs didn't have to worry about transition d as much vs SA because we were actively trying to slow the game down after dallas would score. should be an interesting series.

AZ Republic says 5-7 days. Which could be up to 3 games. :depressed

Barbosa, James, and House will really have to step up to make up for that set back. Raja has been one of the more consistent offensive players on the squad during the post season.

KT was in uniform so maybe he'll make an appearance on Friday.

Diaw doesn't have a defender that can properly cover him. Howard was as close as it got but his status doesn't look to great either.

Good to see Marion finally pulling together a very good Playoffs. He has got to be one of the most versatile players in the NBA and he finally has the stage to show why many of us consider him one of the best players in the NBA.

The Suns though can't hold a lead for anything. 19 point 3rd quarter lead versus the Clips, 5 point lead with 12 seconds left versus the Lakers, and various 8 point leads versus the Mavs. Granted a lot has to do with the pace, but a stop or two won't hurt.

How come there aren't enough INTELLIGENT Mavs' fans like this one? Big ups Clambake for realizing what the game was.

Again, i question Dallas' defense. There simply isn't any if you are up by nine points and then lose by three. That's a +3 swing (12 points). Any coach will tell you that that state shows that the Mavs cannot sustain defensive pressure on the Suns.
