Yeah the suns are the ones in the playoffs, but head-to-head, the Kings are better than the Phoenix Suns. Suns play NO defense at all. And like I always say, it's hard to talk about the Kings while they're making big changes and end the 2nd part of the season with the 2nd best record in the league, but kings > suns.

Since the West is mired in teams that win 40-50 games, is that really saying something? And why bring this up? Are you saying the Kings should be in the Conference Finals right now, or making a bold prediction they will be there next season?

Since you are obviously an idiot, the Suns nor the Kings have ever been known as defense first franchises. A team doesn't get to the WCF's simply by outscoring opponents. You're a fookin motard if you think that's true. Even the Queens played some D in their "hey day" of a two year run.

JMarkJohns
05-25-2006, 10:43 PM
Yeah... until I see rankings, I can't give you credit. From just a brief search they appear to be much worse over said period than San Antonio and on par with Phoenix in PPG allowed, FG% allowed and rebounding.

I don't every remember the Suns being known as defensive teams, so until I see rankings, I'm going to guess Kings were mid-to-late teens in the majority of stats because that's where I'd guess Phoenix was during the same stretch.

EDIT: Well, according to that sites "defensive efficiency" ratings, Sacramento turns out to be a very good defensive team over that stretch.

Seventh in 2000-01
Sixth in 2001-02
Second in 2002-03

However, I dispute this because a glance at the raw numbers says the system is screwy. Take your conference final season of 01-02.

Sacramento was 19th in PPG allowed, 12th in FG% allowed, 7th in rebounds per game, 15th in total steals, 22nd in total blocks and 11th in forced turnovers.

How in the world does this equate to sixth?

I'm having trouble finding "actual" rankings, and I don't feel like running the numbers myself. During that two year stretch though, I believe they actually led the league in FG% allowed for a year.

And I'm not claiming the Kings have ever been known as a defensive team, but for two years they were a very solid defensive group. Right now though, the Kings are dropping that offensive mindset and look to be mimicking the likes of Detroit/San Antonio with their defensive look.

Nah, playing no defense is probably how they have such energy on the offensive end. I cannot believe a team that played back to back 7 game series with a 7 man rotation had the legs to score 121 points in a game. But then, it was against the Mavs.... :lol

My guess is they figure FG% allowed higher than PPG allowed and other miscelaneous stats since tempo directly affects the latter more than anything.

FG% is a constant, reguardless of tempo. Meanwhile rebounds will shift, but a good defensive FG% team will get more rebounds so it also probably figures in higher.

However, I really have no clue and they don't give an equation. They, like Phoenix during that stretch, look pretty solid, but nothing overwelmed me.

Still, it says they were a top-10 team. Therefore it says you were right.

Props...

You know what though? I think that's part of the master plan, which sounds so ridiculous because it should never be able to work, but look at them! They took the 3rd seed in the competitive West, they won two 7 game series (and you'd have to think their legs would tire after that with only a 7 man rotation), and they lead off the WCF with a road win. There's something weird about that team. They turn just about every philosophy about winning in the NBA on it's head. Just fucking bizarre. Delusions of granduer...

Remember, before Kurt Thomas went down, John Hollinger had Phoenix rated as a top-5 adjusted defense. I believe they were even top-2 ranked for a while.

When the Suns get their starting frontcourt back, we'll talk.

Until then, the Suns are still playing with their bench while the Kings are sitting hope with their starters.

I thought the point was to win? Until the purpose of the NBA season is changed to being the best defensive team, I don't think fans of a team ousted from the playoffs can talk smack about a team still in the playoffs.

Until the purpose of the NBA season is changed to being the best defensive team, I don't think fans of a team ousted from the playoffs can talk smack about a team still in the playoffs.
i dont care what that stat freak john hollinger said. :lol even with kurt thomas the suns played no defense and gave up layup after layup. i can talk smack about the suns because i know they wont win a title with the way they play.

My guess is they figure FG% allowed higher than PPG allowed and other miscelaneous stats since tempo directly affects the latter more than anything.

JM, if that defensive efficiency is silmar to the one that ranked the Suns this season then it's a decieving formula - guessing it is. Remember before KT went down the Suns were #1 or #2 based on that formula.

However, defense will always/generally be judged on three things - Points given up, FG %, and rebounds.

By the way, how much do average tickets run for the Suns games? How far is the arena from Tempe? I'm moving out to AZ next semester to finish off at ASU and need some advice.

Not the person to ask as I don't live in the Valley.

Best ask Bill :)

Seriously... He went to ASU, so I figure he's willing to hook up a fellow Devil.

I don't feel like dealing with his carnage.

What's wrong Colonel Sanders can't have a regular discussion because you're insulted by BBall debate? Tisk, tisk...

Anyway... Suns Tix are some of the highest in town. An upper deck - depending on local - will run @ $28-$40 and they only go up from there. Those prices are for crappy sections too.

Tempe is a great city - you'll love it. The scenery is mighty fine if you catch my drift ;-)
The arena is about 15min from Tempe once on the freeway.

JM, i never "formally" attended ASU. I'm just native to Tempe and have been supporting ASU since i was knee high to a keg.

I still don't think they'll win this series, but just to be where they are is amazing.

The Suns are a bunch of Idiots. And in that sense i'm comparing them to the BoSox of a few years ago, when they won the title; just didn't care. They're just 'ballin and having fun. It's crazy.

That three days of rest may have recharged them enough for one last run. It can't be explained, just watch and enjoyed.

At least Artest has given him his endorsement. I guess that is a positive.

So is he going to bail on the monarchs just as the season gets started? Still seems like an odd choice considering they've been asking teams for persmission to talk to their people.

The Kings have the second longest playoffs streak going right now behind the Spurs. When your team accomplishes that, we will talk.

The Suns have made the playoffs 16 of the last 18 years with one finals appreance and four more Western Conference Finals appearances (five if you count the year they made the finals).

The Kings have made the playoffs 8 consecutive seasons with only one Western Conference Finals appearance (and only 9 total playoff appearances in the last 20 seasons).

Hm... I wonder which team has accomplished more... :lol

Have any WNBA coaches ever made this transition?

While that is a "franchise" title, Sactown fans have zero reason claim to it as their "own". Heck they weren't even called the "Kings" back then and they've had four city names.

For any sacramento fan to claim that title as their own is a losing argument.

From http://www.nba.com/kings/history/team_history.html

"The franchise's glory years are now a distant memory."

Holy cow you're own website disses the team.

Afterall this thread is about the Kings, not the Royals from the late 40's/early50's. Were any of you there to partake in the celebration? Nope. And, the SACRAMENTO Kings barely have anything. Maybe they should change their name to the Vagabons after the move.

This thread is one Kings fan claiming the Kings>Suns, which is just flat out looney anyway you look at it.

They above poster asked which team has accomplished more. So even if you discount that title, which I only threw in there for shits and giggles, both teams have won squat. So I'd say its a draw.

His track record is quite good. I don't know if he can earn the respect of male basketball players though, having never played himself and coached women the last 4 years.

As long as Artest is happy though, it should work out.

I wonder if he'll try and incorporate his white line defense that worked so well for the Monarchs.

Exactly!! That's a fantastic way of putting it. Just amazing to watch them. Alot of fun, too. I remember coming out of the timeout before the gamewinner for the Suns, Diaw was grinning or laughing or something, and this is the guy who the play was drawn up for, joking around with 4 seconds left on the clock. I don't get it, but I hope that if the Pistons don't win it, the Suns do. I'm hooked, lol.

I truly believe these Suns know that they shouldn't be here. Not with all that's happened to them along the way. Not with what they've had to play with in these playoffs.

I truly believe they know it and I truly believe that's why they're still playing.

No pressure when you've exceeded every single expectation imaginable.

Most people had them missing the playoffs all together.
