Manny I don't know how cheap you can get one here but I got my last used car at Vollmer on San Pedro and Olmos Drive last December 2003 and I was happy with price, service and car. It's worth a drive by and see what's in their lot right now.

I actually owned a Yugo (same model year as the one on the picture). I was setting up my first company at the time and I used to park at least a block away from the client I was visiting http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smilol.gif I finally decided to get rid of it when I returned home from a 3 weeks long trip and found that both front wheels had literally fallen off (like you see in kids cartoons).

The reason I ask is because my ZX2 just threw a rod. There is a piston sticking out the front of the engine block on an engine with 60,000 miles on it. POS Ford.

I don't really think it's worth it to pay almost 2000 dollars to get it fixed, so I'd rather get something serviceable right now.

that is obviously one explanation but is not necessarily the only reason...sometimes shit just happens...I scrambled a motor and threw a rod out the side of a chevy 350 once at 80,000 miles...and that truck had a perfect maintenance record and it had just been recently serviced when it shelled out...the dealership tried to say it was a lack of oil problem too...and I threw the bullshit flag...we finally agreed that they would send the parts out to an independent lab for testing and they determined it was a casting flaw in the rod and Chevy ended up putting a new motor in my truck...

CC, sounds like a bitch. You weren't using that truck for a while were you? I took an '83 Chevy Malibu to have a fuel pump replaced. The day I got it back I was driving home and it caught fire! I was so pissed at that damn shop. I also took a truck to the Brake Check on Perrin Beitel road to have the brakes fixed and an oil change. I drove it to a friend's house near IH35 and Eisenhaur and as I pulled in the driveway I noticed smoke from under the hood. I popped the hood and saw that the alternator was glowing golden hot! I disconnected the battery and had to run water from a hose on it for about 10 minutes it cool it off. Again I was pissed. I had the shop on the phone while dousing the burning alternator and I had a few choice words for them. Could these be coincidences? I just find it hard to believe.

I dropped a car off there once for some routine work and I got a quote of about $400. I knew I was getting shafted but I was too lazy to take it to a different place so I just kept it there. Then I go back the next day to pick it up and they tell me that they'll have to customize a piece and that it would be another day and another $500. I was pissed but I let it slide.

Then the next day I go back and they tell me that they did an additional $300 worth of work on the $900 previous total. I could live with getting f'ed out of $900 but once you get in the thousands, that's when I draw the line. I cussed out the manager, the assistant manager and any mechanic I could find and told them that I wasn't going to pay for any of it. They said they were going to call the police so I handed them my cell phone to make it easier for them. Of course they were bluffing.

It finally came down to I told them I had agreed to the first $900 and nothing else and that's what I was going to pay for. I said that if they wanted whatever $300 piece they put on there, they can take it back.

It ended with me driving away paying $900 of the $1200+ bill.

Moral of the story? Never go to Brake Check and if you get screwed on price at the last second, just curse and threaten to fight them. Worked for me :)

However, I heard that it's good to use them to tell you what is wrong. Then drive away and get it fixed somewhere else.

I really like the Sparks on Perrin Beitel. I took that same truck there because it was leaking oil in a bad way. They quoted me around $400 for a new oil pan seal and rear engine seal. After they had it for 4 hours they called and told be the oil pan seal was fine and didn't need replacing. That saved me $150 from that total. Anywhere else I would have gone would have just replaced it no matter what and probably found something else wrong. They also do 60,000 services much cheaper than dealers.

By the way, stay away from Midas on Pat booker. They qouted me $485 bucks on a bunch of stuff. I said I would think about it. They called me later saying that the guy had talked to his manager and said he could "knock off" the $85 and make it an even $400. I was like, "Uh...that's nice." That's an HEB cashier telling me at the register after I swiped my debt card that she talked to her manager and I could have my TV dinner for $2.00 instead of $2.99.

When I lived in SA, I twice took my ex's Supra to Brake Check for diagnosis. On both occassions, they quoted me twice the work and twice the price that was actually necessary. They really, truly are rip off artists. Somebody needs to clue a local station or even 20/20 on to these sheisters.

Engine had 61k on it and for the 30k I had it, had an oil change every 3k. I do the maintence myself to make sure it's done right. The oil in the engine was not an issue.

I took a 78 Camaro to the Brake Check on Broadway for slipping brakes. They told me I needed a new mastercylinder and power booster and it would be $600, which I informed them I not only didn't have, but wouldn't have for the forseeable future so thanks but no thanks.

I purchased a new mastercylinder and power booster from NAPA for $180, and paid a mechanic buddy $80 and all the beer he could drink while he installed it.

$600 or $260 and beer...hmmm...lemme think about that one for a while...
