Not sure where to post this:

i was wondering if anyone has the scoop on the Argentinean National Team. Have they decided on the final roster for the World Cup? Who, from the Olympic roster, will likely play again? Who won't be coming back?

thanks. :princess

Can someone duct tape manu to his lazy-boy for the summer? REST MANU, REST!

maybe the staff could break down the tapes of the tourney and find a way to use oberto more effectively. i really think he could help out if given more oppurtunity.

Manu best NBA season so far was right after he won tournament MVP at the olympics. A good perfomance with the national team would probably boost his confidence.

Players most likely to be on the final roster:
PG: Sanchez
SG: Ginobili / Delfino
SF: Nocioni
PF: Oberto / Scola
C: Wolkowyski

Players that have a very good chance on making the team
PG: Prigioni
SF: Jasen / Herrmann / Kammerichs / Matias Sandes
PF: Leo Gutierrez
C: Roman Gonzalez / Gaby Fernández

Montecchia (sub PG) won't be playing for the national team anymore, he retired.

Ariel

These are almost a lock:

PG: Pepe Sánchez / Pablo Prigioni
SG: Manu / Delfino
SF: Nocioni
PF: Scola
C: Oberto / Wolkowyski

Out of the remaining 4:
Another SF will likely come out of Herrmann, Jasen or Kammerichs. My guess is, Herrmann is in.
The PF left could be Leo Gutiérrez
The two spots left would be decided by need... I'd think that one of the other SFs could go in, as could Quinteros or Mázzaro (shooters), or Gaby Fernández (perimeter oriented big guy).

So it could round up to, IMO, something like this:

PG: Pepe Sánchez / Pablo Prigioni
SG: Manu / Delfino
SF: Nocioni / Herrmann
PF: Scola / Leo Gutiérrez
C: Oberto / Wolkowyski / Gaby Fernández

and one other guy, depending on what coach Hernández believes he'd need the most.

Basically it would be almost the same group, except that Prigioni would play for Montecchia (retired), and another SF (Herrmann, Jasen or Kammerichs) for Sconochini (retired as well).

No. In Argentina we are an eclectic school of basket. Among our influences are Hubie Brown ( flex ), U.S. College Basketball, Ettore Messina, Serbian School and (gasp) Mike D'Antoni who is well known here from his times in Europe. Most of the knowledge was received thru clinics etc.

Coach Magnano ( now in Italy ) Played flex all the time, Oveja (Sheep ) Hernandez play up tempo with some Flex cuts.

After the Olympics Pop started to use some flex in the Spurs.

Ruben Magnano

The one thing I have my doubts about Hernandez is that he isn't very keen on man-to-man defense. Magnano is a very smart coach who has the instinct to know when is the time to switch from zone to man-to-man and viceversa. Hernandez seems to have an unlimited faith in zone which can be dangerous when the opposition is hot from three point land.

Montech leaving might be tough. He was excellent against the USA, coming off the pick and hitting the 3. He was a different player then Pepe, better scoring talent. Isn't that kind of a tough loss from a role player standpoint and stylistically at the PG position?

i read my post again and it was ambiguous. i was indeed referring to the World Basketball Championships but I referred to it as World Cup because I've seen Manu refer to it as world cup before. but i shud have seen it coming what with the real World Cup coming soon.

anyway, what's the average height and age of this argentine basketball team? and what do you think are their chances of winning the WBC this year?

Don't sweat it, the fact that it was posted in a basketball forum, made it far more reasonable to assume it a minor terminology mix-up that ultimately referred to basketball, rather than a completely separate topic altogether as it would be with soccer.

Maybe some need to use better judgment, besides reading...

anyway, what's the average height and age of this argentine basketball team? and what do you think are their chances of winning the WBC this year?
Here's height and age for some key players:

PG: Pepe Sánchez (29, 6'4") / Pablo Priogioni (29, 6'1")
SG: Manu Ginóbili (28, 6'6") / Carlos Delfino (23, 6'6")
SF: Andrés Nocioni (26, 6'7") / Walter Herrmann (26, 6'8")
PF: Luis Scola (26, 6'9")
C: Fabricio Oberto (31, 6'10") / Rubén Wolkowyski (32, 6'10")

So, that's a pretty veteran team, and the height is good by NBA standards at the 1 through 3, but a bit undersized at the 4 and 5.

As for the chances, I believe that gold is for USA to lose, but we have a good enough team to fight for a medal. Still, nowadays international basketball is very competitive, and a bad game in the quarterfinals can change everything. I expect them to do well, but I wouldn't venture anything beyond that.

I believe that Delfino would have only limited minutes as Manu's backup, he might get lucky during periods of games, if we go small (yeah, small ball again lol), and he is moved to the SF spot, with Nocioni as PF.

As long as there is another 3 point shooter who is hot, it doesn't matter if he is a PG. Actually, in Argentina historically, the PG spot is reserved for a playmaker, "pass first", kind of player, who only shoots if the shot clock is running down. I'm worried that there is no pure shooter in the roster so far. Manu, Wolkowisky, Fernandez, Nocioni, Gutierrez, Prigioni, Herrmann, Delfino and Sanchez can shoot the 3, and get hot ocasionally, but they aren't 3 point specialists.

Well he's in the neighborhood of 27, and is trying to convert from a post player to a wing. There may also be buyout issues. Who knows.

I was in Argentina in April of '05 and, trust me, basketball ain't that big there. I saw one billboard with Manu's picture on it in Buenos Aires -- an advertisement for a bank.

I saw one or two basketball courts in all of BA, tops. In short, basketball is about as popular in Argentina as Margaret Thatcher.

It would serve them right if we won the World Cup in soccer.

(All kidding aside, it's a nice country to visit -- great wine country in Mendoza).

Matías Sandes is still playing here in Argentina (not right now, really, his team didn't make to the finals). He's been under contract with Tau for about a year now, but they allowed him to continue playing in our league for the time being. I don't know if he's going to play one more season here or he will be doing so in Spain.

NBA? I just don't see it happening, he would have to REALLY improve his game, considering he's not even the best player in our league. Mind you, the best Argentine players are already in Europe or in the NBA. He's still young though.

As for Herrmann, he's not doing so well and is not happy with his team. Apparently, he's looking forward to playing somewhere else next season.

Saludos.

Well there's a big country beyond Buenos Aires, in those inlands' cities BBall is the 2nd sport, in BA no way.

Just to mention, Bahia Blanca, Comodoro Rivadavia, Cordoba, Rafaela, Suchales, etc. ... those are small towns (in USA scale, of course) I meant almost 150/250 thousands people.

May I disagree? BBall has two professional levels in ARG's league ... Rugby still is amateur.

IMHO, I'll go (as second) with Tennis or BBall, later Racing (in terms of fans).
