Egg xactly. Sometimes you just got to work to get that sweet, sweet $148/week. It isn't always glamourous but at least you're doing what you have to do to get the job done. That's something that ranks on my top five of respectable things all-time.

Kudos to you Archie's semi-girlfriend...yes, kudos indeed.

Taco Bell near me is advertizing for Manager positions, up to $45K (probably BS).

I've seen a couple other fast food chains with signs up for hiring. Aren't they getting flooded at this time of year by students out of school? Why are the signs up?

JoeChalupa

Maybe because some don't want to work for that pay?

Yes, retail and office jobs are far better than food service (and most of the time pay better too). Bill's is a good place though, there's only one that I know of in Austin and it's not close to me at all, so I'm sure to go there every time I'm in the area. <3 the tea.

Our neighbor is going to try to get me an interview for Thursday.

The job sounds fairly simple. I would be a front desk service rep for a company that produces signs.
The salary is the the same as Bill Miller's anD I can wear jeans.

Also, my neighbor thinks her boss will give me a flexible fall schedule so I can keep my Spurs job. For now my hours would be Monday- Friday 8:30- 5:30.

My interview at Bill Miller's is tomorrow. Now I don't know what to do about it. Should I still go?
Or is it safe to hold out for this other interview since I can probably always get hired at a fast food place.

Thoughts?

postponing would be your best bet since most bill miller's interviews are actually "yes your hired, here;s some paperwork, fill it out and bring it back in X-amoutn of days, thats when you start"

Go to the interview at Bills. Then get into healthcare asap.

Healthcare Credentialing is a good field which doesn't require a degree and pays well to start.

All you're doing is background checks on physicians, like licensure, education, board certification, malpractice, sanctions, references, etc.

When you're looking for clerical stuff, just don't forget the healthcare side of it.

your best bet is to work as a waitress or a bartender anywhere else... you will make more money in tips than at an office job or working fast food... also, you can go to bill millers and still get hired, start working and then quit whenever you want.. all managers know that when they hire people in these low pay, low skill jobs that people quit left and right with no 2 weeks notice... also, they will tell you that in texas they can fire you any day for any reason and that you can quit at any time for any reason..

regardless, if you are solely looking for where you will make the most money, go be a waitress or a bartender...bartender is even better...

angel_luv
05-29-2006, 10:18 AM
I have four objectives ( aside from the obvious being responsible and making money.)

1) I want to work where God wants me to.

2) I want to be free on Sundays ( church and softball) and other week nights ( for gtgs and church choir)

3)I want to be able to keep my Spurs job.

4) I would like to try something new and interesting and permanent.

That is what I am holding out for. My dream would be that the job I am hopefully getting to interview for this Thursday proves to be the one.

However, I understand that sometimes you have to work while you wait for it, which is really why I am still going to the Bill Miller's interview.

What do you want to do? What are your interests? I'd guess you're about 23 - so I'd be reluctant to work at a Bill Miller's. Not that it's a job below you, or me, or anyone - but it'll just keep you away from finding exactly what you want to do. You have to be happy in your job.

Look at your church, and see what jobs are available. Volunteer at your church, because a lot of jobs are hired from the volunteers. Talk to your contacts with the Spurs/AT&T Center, and see if there's an internship program you can get into there. The AT&T runs all-year, not just for the Spurs. At a point, you have to chase what you want to do, and if you can do Bill Miller's WHILE you're doing that, great. But if it takes up too much of your time, and doesn't let you pursue what you want, I wouldn't take it. I'd still go to the interview, though.

The job I hope to apply for on Thursday is for a service rep for a company that makes signs. It pays well and is permanent. Also it sounds interesting The hours may very well be flexible enough that I can work there and at the Terrace club- something I want to do if at all possible.

Oh and this was encouraging. I just found out that I was recommended for sign company job because I am a hostess.
Apparently the manager wants someone young with restaurant industry experience because he believes such a person will have the skills necessary to succeed with him.

I trust that my neighbor put in a good word for me, so we'll see what happens.

From what I can tell, if hired, I will get to train for a week in Dallas. :wow

angel_luv
05-29-2006, 06:05 PM
Oh my gosh you guys!

It went so well today! Thank you God! I am so pleased!

I had read in the hand book that they want people to arrive fifteen minutes early for their shift, so I arrived twenty minutes early for my interview.

I caught the manager (a different one than the scary one I had dealt with on Saturday) on her lunch break and so I had to sit and wait.

When the interview began, the manager's first words to me were, " I looked at your resume, why on earth do you want to work here?"

I told the truth, that I wasn't sure that I did want to work at Bill's. I said I was exploring job obtions and had heard enough good things about Bill Miller's that I thought this establishment was worth looking into.

I said I thought it was best for everyone that I explore all my options so when I chose a place it would be because I really wanted to work there.

The manager was very attentive and informative and asked good questions about my back ground and experience.
We had an instant rapport. I felt entirely at ease.

After about fifteen minutes of visiting about me and the company, the manager said to me, " This is what we'll do. I want to hire you, but I also don't want to interfere with any other possibilities you may have. Why don't you think things over and get back to me on Friday."

I honestly don't see how things could have turned out more perfectly. :elephant

Moving on to stage two.. my plan now is to shine again during my interview on Thursday and make an informed decision after that.

Thanks all for your advice and support. It helped. :)

The bill millers job experiance will produce some learning that you would not get in a more.. uh.. "soft" job.

Yea they deserve better but sometimes doing the dirty work teaches you that life experiance so that after college etc and later in life your more well equipped to deal with and understand crappy jobs and tasks.

Lowenstein pointed to a new study authored by Dr. Robert Crandall of the Brookings Institution and Prof. J. Gregory Sidak of the Georgetown University Law Center entitled Video Games: Serious Business for America’s Economy.

Crandall and Sidak’s research found that the entertainment software business provided direct and indirect contributions of more than $18 billion to the nation’s gross output in 2004. Both researchers said that figure would steadily increase as the industry grows in the years ahead.

Yes. The one on IH-35 at Schertz had a sign up recently that said they started at $7.50. They were very short-handed at the time, I don't know if that's still accurate. The sign in UC at the same time said $6.50.

The interview went very, very well. Everyone was super nice to me.

The manager is going to send my personality test away for evaulation and then said he will have me come back in for another interview in about a week.

At this point I think I am at least 85% in.

I would need to be trained in company procedures of course, but the work sounds interesting and definitely doable.

Pay starts at $8.00 an hour and I will work 37-40 hours a week.
After my probationary period is over I will be eligable to receive comission pay in addition to my regular salary. Whoosh! :elephant

I have six paid holidays (was told sometimes our Christmas holiday is extended out of company good will) and three sick days.
After working there a year, I will get a week's paid vacation. My first ever! :)

The five day training in Dallas I mentioned in a previous post would be in September. They'll fly me up.

Oh and I can keep my Spurs job if I want to. :clap

Apparently Fast Signs does a lot of business with Levy at the AT&TCenter.

Oh, and a little piece of advice for taking the test:

Do not, I repeat: do not answer with what you think they want to hear. There are actually questions in there to see if you are doing exactly that. Just be as honest with yourself as possible and you'll be fine!

It was funny ... the one I took was like 200 questions long ... and at 3 different points in the test it asks exactly the same question:

"How do you rate your memory?"

I had to laugh. :)

Thanks, Sw! :)

This particular test had about 35- 40 characteristics and you had to rank yourself from a scale to one being rare and 3 being usually on how you are at work.

It had words like:

patient
workaholic
attention to detail
fashionable
compassionate
un- emotional

etc.

That test was interesting because it is so subjective. For example on of the words was creative and it was hard for me know how to answer.

I am creative at work as much as the company will allow me to be. I am always ready to brainstorm but also understand the importance of sticking to company policy.
I think I rated myself a two on that one.

The funniest word was modest- especially considering that I had just given myself a 3 on fashionable. :lmao

I don't think Jesus is so detailed as to be saying "hmmm does Angel Luv get Bill Miller's or no? hmmm..." or "Should I give Angel Luv the sign job instead?"

I had my second interview about an hour ago.

I am here to tell you that it will be the grace of God if I land this job.

I had to take three tests. I am fairly sure I did well on the spelling and the editing test because those are my strengths.

What I do not do so well with are numbers. Granted I am semi smart there- I can do all the basic addition and subtraction. I can even figure out algebra if I have instructions in front of me.

Well they gave me a list of fractions some alone and some with mixed numbers and I had to figure out what was half.

I had a complete brain freeze. I may have even done the fractions correctly but I surely did not feel that way.
I don't remember when in school we halved fractions. I may have done it twice years ago.
My friend is really good and math and we had discussed fractions in preparation for the test, but neither of us thought to cover that.

I did the math portion first, thinking I could get it over with. That turned out to be a mistake because I felt so stupid afterwards.
Then after I did the spelling and editing, the manager came out and asked me all sorts of random questions like: "If 13% are for an idea and 42% are against it, how many people are undecided?", " Do you play chess?" and who is hurt most by a lower income tax?"

I had to pray. I wanted to forget about my math failure and at least give myself a chance to do well at the rest.

I think I did okay. I told the manager that I was fairly sure I hadn't done well with my fraction exam but was sure I could do them if he would show me how.

The manager is going to analyze all my results and let me know one way or the other probably by next Wednesday.

I did my best and have decided to try not to worry about it. The only thing that would suck worse than not getting this job is to let a not perfect interview ruin my whole weekend.

I just have to have faith that God will give me ( in the case of the fractions :oops)underserved favor and hope for the best.

I just have to have faith that God will give me ( in the case of the fractions :oops)underserved favor and hope for the best.

damn they make you do all that for an interview.

what job were you going for again there?

and i'll be waiting for some sweet tea by the bucket. thanks!

Sweet tea? You are assuming I won't get the other job are you? :(

:lol J/K

The job at fast signs is as a service rep. The company seems really great- there are stores all over the country. And all the people I have met from this one are really nice.

All those tests were a part of the second interview.

The hardest interview process I have ever been through is with Southwest Airlines.

If memory serves, I had to go to the initial orientation. After that I was invited to a group interview. ( Keep in mind there were weeks in between.) Then after that I had to go to another interview in which I met individually with two SW Airline staff.
I didn't make it any further but the next step after that for me would have been flight attendent school.

I didnt even know about the fast signs job. then again i didnt really read all of this topic.

My interview for my current job consisted of sitting down with my boss now, him and I chatting for about 10 minutes, him telling me what the job consisted of, him telling me to think about it over the weekend and calling him. Great stuff.

My interview before for apartment locating was simply them saying, you have your license, here is how it works, do you want it? When do you want to start?

I havent really had any difficult interview processes....then again for a long time I would never get called for interviews, probably cause employers saw I hadnt worked in 2 years due to graduate school and therefore didnt want me. Or at least thats what I have convinced myself of. :lol

no, although sometime in the next year I plan on getting into investement properties full time and simply do that for my career, but thats down the road somewhat.

I do title work primarily right now for oil companies, look up title history for various tracts of land, along with their mineral lease history, etc.

Thats the 'real quick' version of it.

I have a new and I think, improved job lead.

I applied today to work at Laurel Ridge, which for those of you who do not know is a treament center for trouble kids, teens, and even some adults, I believe.

I wouldn't be a counselor but more of a mentor/ staff assistant- watch out for people's safety, be eyes and ears, and hopefully a friend as well.

It is a great field for me because I relate to it. I am adopted and all my siblings, and ironically the only family I have left here, are foster siblings.

I missed my call for an interview because I was at the movies. ( I saw Lake House. Girls, it is excellent!)
But they want me to come in either tomorrow or Wednesday for an interview to discuss what positions are available.

I left a message and hope to get in there tomorrow.

I never fully listened to my rejection message from the sign shop and as a result it was still on my phone.

When I first checked my messages I thought it was that guy calling me back and I really did not want to go there.
Then I realized that it was not an option anyway.

My good news message, the real new one, was right after it- kind of symbolic of how my fortunes seem to be turning.

At any rate, I am better of now than I was this morning, so I am going to celebrate that. :D

You can. No, I'm not in college. I went ( and graduated) to a two year Bible College/ Leadership training program.

But that is all.

I don't have any immediate plans to attend more school but it is not out of the realm of possibility either. :)

Hope you get the job, angel. I think something like that would be much more challenging and satisfying for you than bussing tables at Bill Miller. But, I think you would be an asset, no matter where you worked.

Be very careful at Laurel Ridge, though. They have had legal problems several times in the past, although I have not heard anything lately.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever considered waiting tables at a regular restaurant? The reason I'm asking is that I know there have been several establishments in the Universal City/Schertz area looking for wait staff in the past month or so. I think with your personality and temperament, you could clean up working for tips. People would LOVE you!

I haven't heard of particular episodes at Laurel Ridge although it makes sense that there would be some.

Hey Angel,

Good luck with your new lead. The mentoring job sounds great; I'm sure you will find the experience quite satisfying as well. One of my first jobs was counseling at-risk youth in a highly gang/drug infested part of Los Angeles. It’s amazing how much these kids lack someone in their lives to care and nurture them. Simple acts of kindness and respect can change and shape their life.

Keep up the aggressive job search and remember that although you may not land the job you’re applying for, the interviewing process adds to your arsenal of experience.

Good luck!
