Coach's wife allegedly shoved Suns fans
Wire Reports
Wednesday, May 31, 2006

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and reserve center DJ Mbenga entered the stands late in the first quarter of Game 4 after Cassandra Johnson, wife of Mavs coach Avery Johnson, got into a dispute with two Suns fans.

According to the report, Cuban and Mbenga were joined by team security coordinator Jim Colleran in a section overlooking the Mavs' bench to check on Cassandra Johnson. A misdemeanor assault complaint was reportedly later filed by the fans against Johnson for allegedly shoving and swearing at them.

It was not immediately known if Cuban or Mbenga are facing sanction from the league for going into the stands. NBA spokesman Brian McIntyre said the incident would be reviewed by the league office Wednesday.

Mark Cuban tried to downplay the incident at halftime, calling it "a non-event," but this could be the second time that fans have had problems with Avery Johnson's wife.

During the Spurs-Mavs series, several Spurs fans reported that AT&T Center security had to be called to the a section where Cassandra Johnson was "causing a scene."

That incident was not reported in print elsewhere, although two sports radio stations quoted fans from the SpursReport forums when commenting about that alleged incident.

Johnson’s wife involved in altercation with fans
By Mercedes Mayer
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

PHOENIX — A pair of Phoenix Suns fans filed a misdemeanor assault complaint against the wife of Mavericks coach Avery Johnson after an altercation during Tuesday night’s Game 4.

Jose Martinez, 34, of Scottsdale, Ariz., accused Cassandra Johnson of shoving him and his fiancee, Rebecca Kettle, 32, and swearing at them in the first quarter of the Mavs’ 106-86 loss at US Airways Center.

Johnson said she didn’t touch the couple, only asked them to "not get up so much so my son can see the game."

Johnson was sitting in the lower bowl with her two children in seats the family purchased instead of tickets provided by the team. She said her family dealt with unruly Suns fans during Game 3 on Sunday and wasn’t going to sit by idly this time.

"(Kettle) got belligerent, so I went off and got an usher," Johnson said. “I told (the usher) it was going to be heated, I needed to get some help.

"I didn't want to embarrass my husband or anyone in the Mavericks organization."

Johnson said the only contact she had with the pair came when Martinez brushed her away. Several Suns fans surrounding Johnson were shouting at her, and Martinez said Johnson's children were both crying.

Martinez said Johnson shoved Kettle and, as he was trying to separate the two women, Johnson shoved him.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban, team director of security Jim Colleran and inactive center DJ Mbenga went into the stands on Johnson’s behalf. Cuban asked the Johnson family to move to the locker room or a suite for the remainder of the game.

Security escorted Kettle and Martinez, who are partial season-ticket holders, to other seats . As they were being relocated, Kettle made an obscene gesture at Johnson.

Jon Bloom, the Suns' director of security, said that aggravated the situation, and Kettle was forced to leave the arena.

As the situation unfolded, a clearly concerned Avery Johnson looked into the stands during a timeout. The Johnsons have been married 14 years.

Martinez and Kettle didn’t know they were dealing with Johnson's wife but did think it was a Mavs player’s wife.

Martinez, speaking on behalf of Kettle, said Johnson refused to leave her seat, and, "ultimately, they threw (Kettle) out of the game. We have no disrespect for Coach Johnson — we were just there to cheer."

Cuban called the situation a "non-event," saying it was only something because it was Johnson’s wife.

"I heard something went on, but we've been in situations before on the road," Avery Johnson said. "When you're on the road, things happen, people throw stuff at you. We'll see what happened. I haven't talked to her yet."

Mrs. Johnson shouldn't be harrassed and I am sorry if she was.

However, it is suspect to me that she had the same kind of trouble in two different arenas.

I am not saying that there were not jerky fans in both places. But I do feel that the first incident should have made Mrs. Johnson aware about seating arrangements for this series.
And for pete's sake! If you had trouble on Sunday why put yourself in the same position just two days later?

Johnson was sitting in the lower bowl with her two children in seats the family purchased instead of tickets provided by the team. She said her family dealt with unruly Suns fans during Game 3 on Sunday and wasn’t going to sit by idly this time.

And with all due respect, it is unrealistic to expect people to stay seated during a play off game, especially when their team is at home.

Johnson said she didn’t touch the couple, only asked them to "not get up so much so my son can see the game."

I agree with that. No one deserves to be harrassed for no reason, but each of us has a certain amount of responsibility for our own safety and peace of mind, too, especially when we are dragging our children into our dramas. If you find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation and you have other options (she could probably sit just about anywhere she wants), quit putting yourself in the same position. It's really not that hard to figure out. If this story is true, it just sounds to me like Mrs. Johnson enjoys the attention (even if negative) and the circus she causes. Otherwise, she'd sit in the team's box or somewhere out of harm's way; and she certainly wouldn't challenge the opposing team's fans in their own arena. That's just stupid.

While it not confirmed, local reports on Dallas radio claim Mrs. Johnson complained because Suns fans were "standing too much" around her. From there, words were exchanged and a shouting match ensued.

It is curious we rarely if ever hear any reports of other coaches or player's wives getting involved in similar incidents.

For the safety of herself and her kids, she should consider watching the game from a luxury suite. This way she can yell, scream and not have to worry about opposing fans standing around her.

Perhaps the opposing teams should "beef up" security in the areas where the wives and families of opposing players and coaches sit.

I'm a Spurs Fan in Arizona and I've sat totally decked out in Spurs gear and cheered loudly. Suns fans around me didn't like it but it was always friendly give and take, you just can't let it get personal, and those who do..whatever. AJ's wife caused problems in two arenas because she views herself as a lady of privledge and takes offense wayyy too easily. With two kids in tow you think you'd let some things slide off your back and be a little more laid back.

Since when was AJ's wife a part of the Mavericks organization? What the owner and the coach's wife do has nothing to do with what the players do on the court. Terry served his time and actually helped the Spurs out by not playing Game 6, he's not to be persecuted his whole frickin' life.

Had s/he mentioned Mbenga that would've made more sense, I'm surprised the league hasn't suspended him after the action they took against Antonio Davis. Definitely when one thinks of "class", it is Arizona fans...The same fans that flip off & boo their own players... (See Jason Kidd)...The same fans who voted down recognizing the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday....

How on earth did you manage to fit all that nonsense into one post?

First off, Kidd flipped the fans in Phoenix off, not the other way around. And he wasnt even one of "their own players" when it happened.

http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2002/0308/1347857.html

New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd said his obscene gesture following Wednesday night's loss in Phoenix wasn't directed at the Suns' crowd but toward one fan who taunted him.

Kidd was fined $5,000 by the NBA for making the gesture as he walked into the tunnel following New Jersey's 89-87 loss.

Television replays made it seem like Kidd was giving the finger to the Suns' fans, but Kidd said it was only meant for an individual.

"It wasn't directed toward all the fans or anybody," he said. "Somebody had said something when I was leaving the court. So the gesture was for that."

Secondly, the Suns fans did not vote down recognition of the MLK holiday. The Governor of AZ, Ev Mecham, cancelled the holiday based on the fact that he thought it was illegal. Ev Mecham was impeached not too long afterwards.

I'm sure you guys have heard this by now but for the others, Mbenga has been suspended for 6 games. Cuban wasn't punished. Well, except for the fact that he has to live with that haircut.

Lame...

That could be of note should the Mavs / Heat end up in the finals and Damp / Diop get into foul trouble.. :drunk

Maybe the league will finally take action when Cuban runs into the stands after another of Mrs Johnson's scenes and starts another Palace of Auburn Hills type near-riot

So you're saying it's ok to rush up into the stand while you're supposed to actually be on the court playing the game? So was it alright for Artest to rush up into the stand considering that he was hit by someone with a cup, not his family, not someone else's family but his own self? Doesn't self-defense trump protection of everyone else?

My thread was in response to the post about everyone else getting a greater number of suspensions than Mbenga. I was just pointing out that Davis did is an exception, probably because he represented the players and doesn't get into trouble. I'm not bitching about the number of suspensions, I think he was pressured to go up with Cuban, stupid move considering we may need him in the next round...if we get there.

Are you responding to my post? If so, then don't use the argument that Davis went into the stand to protect his wife while Mbenga went into the stands to defend someone else's wife. Just keep it simple and say NO ONE should be allowed into the stands if that's your argument. IMO I think a players is allowed to protect himself, like the idiot who walked onto the court and got decked by Jermaine O'Neal, he deserved every ounce of that punch. The idiot who threw a cup at Artest desrves everything he got as well, you can't just allow fans to go apeshit on the players with immunity just because they players are the ones that have to abide by the rules.

That Cuban went into the stands is more disturbing than M'Benga. This guy is a frickin owner who represents the league at the highest level and is actullay supposed to have some intelligence and common sense. What the fuck kind of message is he showing wading into the stands like some teenager on a roid rage. He does know that there are security all over the place. I know other people that have had run-ins with AJ's wife. My friend works security at the AT&T center and said that she created a big scene because she was asked for ID. She acted all put-out and "Don't you realize who I am?" etc. etc.

NBA suspends Mavericks' Mbenga 6 games By JAIME ARON
AP Sports Writer

DALLAS (AP) -- Mavericks backup center D.J. Mbenga was suspended without pay for six games Thursday for going into the stands to aid the wife of coach Avery Johnson during Game 4 of the Western Conference finals in Phoenix.

The punishment is one game longer than New York Knicks forward Antonio Davis received in January for going from the court into the stands to defend his wife.

"It's very difficult to swallow," said Dallas president of basketball operation Donnie Nelson. "My understanding is he went up there with the intention of telling AJ's wife to go back into the locker room."

Mavs owner Mark Cuban - who also went into the stands, but wasn't punished for it - said he pressed the league to consider the Davis precedent.

"They weren't buying it," he said.

NBA vice president Stu Jackson said Mbenga actually got a reduction from the 10-game suspension the league considers a baseline for this offense.

"We ended up at six because D.J. certainly went up there very calmly and there was not an altercation of any kind," Jackson said.

Jackson said Davis got a break because he believeds his spouse was in trouble.

"D.J. went into the stands for someone that was albeit someone he knew, it was not an immediate family member," Jackson said.

The NBA has talked about being strict with players who go into the stands, especially after the brawl during a Pistons-Pacers game in Detroit in 2004.

Mbenga was on the bench in street clothes, having been made inactive for Tuesday night's game, when he joined Cuban and other team officials when they saw that Cassandra Johnson was involved in a first-quarter confrontation with fans.

The league said in a statement that Cuban was off the hook because "his actions did not violate NBA rules and were not otherwise inappropriate."

Earlier this postseason, he was fined $100,000 for going on the court to argue with officials. Five years ago, he was suspended for two games and fined $10,000 for running on the court to break up a fight that started because the Mavs were trying to score enough points for fans to earn free chalupas from a fast food restaurant.

"This wasn't a chalupa moment," Cuban said. "It was something totally different. ... I have a responsibility to everyone who puts on a uniform and their families. Period, end of story."

Mbenga is the second Dallas player suspended during these playoffs. Guard Jason Terry was forced to miss Game 6 of the second round against San Antonio for punching Michael Finley.

"D.J. thought that he could assist the coach's family," Johnson said. "I hope somebody would have grabbed him before he went and took the two or three steps or whatever he did. So it's very disappointing. But we're all one big family. We're in it together."

Mbenga's punishment began with Game 5 on Thursday night. With the series tied 2-2, he'll use up at least one more game of the suspension this round. If any games are left after the playoffs, it'll pick up again at the start of next season.

His absence against the Suns likely won't hurt the Mavericks much since he'd been inactive all series. Plus, the length of the suspension enables the team to put him on the suspended list, which means someone else doesn't have to be made inactive.

Where this hurts Dallas is if the club advances to play either Miami or Detroit in the NBA Finals because both teams have multiple big frontcourt players the 7-foot, 245-pound Mbenga could be used against.

"We all know DJ is not a starting-five kind of guy," Nelson said. "But is there a place for him? Absolutely. We just have to deal with it."

According to all involved, Cassandra Johnson was upset that a man and woman kept standing and cheering, blocking the view of her children. Johnson was accused of hitting the woman twice during a verbal confrontation; Johnson told police she did not make any physical contact.

Phoenix police said the matter would be turned over to the city prosecutor to determine if any misdemeanor charge should be filed.

No doubt she shouldn't be in the stands or expect people to sit...I just love how the SA fans keep piling onto this argument about the classless Dallas fans... :lol

I recall many a proud MavFan during the SA/DAL series going on and on about the AAC and how MavFan are always on thier feet and they keep it loud and blah blah blah.

but other teams fans in thier arenas had better keep thier asses in thier seats.
uh huh.

or is that just the fans who are sitting near Cassandra Johnson? Those fans are obligated to sit at all times. perhaps they shouls also root for the team cassandra wants them too. and go to the bathroom when she says.

just cause folks are hollaring for THIER team on THIER homecourt is no reason to get into an abusive confrontation.
stop trying to excuse it and just accept it.

It seems like everytime I meet a white girl on the Riverwalk she just happens to be from Dallas. Those white girls from Dallas are tired of those little white dicks up there. They just love them some chorizo. Maybe you should concentrate on satisfying your women up there in Dallas and stop playing on the internet. Then maybe your women will stop coming over to San Antonio to look for some satisfaction. That makes me wonder mavs fans. Maybe I already had your mama or sister etc.
