??? The Suns made the choice, the Spurs made the pick. They didn't just draft Barbosa and then decide to trade him. It was worked out in advance. We drafted Barbosa for Phoenix, not in the hope of trading him somewhere and then they called.

Because of a technicality, you cannot trade your first round pick two years in a row (the Ted Stepian rule :lol). So you reach a deal, find out who they want, pick him for them, and announce the player trade later.

That the Suns picked someone else earlier in the round has no bearing. Try to keep up, people. It's not rocket science.

They then traded for Speedy Claxton.

The Spurs traded the rights to Salmons for Claxton in 2002. They didn't pick up Speedy's option for the 2003-2004 season, supposedly because of his injury history, but in reality because they wanted to preserve cap space for Kidd. In 2003 they traded the rights to Barbosa for a future Suns pick (that later went with another #1 and Malik to New York for Nazr) again to preserve cap space for Kidd. Of course, basically, after the dust settled they had passed on Speedy and Josh Howard to lock up Rasho for an eternity. Fuck Jason Kidd.
