View Full Version : The Spurs are too OLD (Window of opportunity is now CLOSED)

I'm more than convinced that the San Antonio team is now a
"has been" your window of opportunity is closed now, Duncan (the engine of your team is not getting any younger and has become injury prone season after season.)

This article better describes the State of your team:

Sorry but you will not win another title and certainly you will not be a contender next year (no pun intended)

"SAN ANTONIO -- On the surface, the San Antonio Spurs appear poised to return next season and reclaim the NBA championship that got away from them this season.

Not so fast.

Unless the Spurs tweak their roster and get a little younger and more athletic, they're going to run into the same problem next season.

On Monday, the Mavericks stepped into the Spurs' noisy arena and walked away with a 119-111 overtime victory in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.

In the three Game 7s in the NBA conference semifinals, the Spurs were the only home team that lost.

And they looked old and tired doing so.

"This is the best series I've ever played in," said Spurs forward Tim Duncan, who has won three championships. "Both teams gave it their all. It went down to the wire.

the Spurs also have already committed nearly $61 million in player salaries for next season, which means being a major player in free agency is out of the question.

The Spurs, the oldest team in the NBA this season, also have to be concerned about the age of their players. Of the Spurs' top 10 players, seven -- Barry (34), Bruce Bowen (35), Duncan (30), Finley (33), Horry (36), Rasho Nesterovic (30) and Van Exel (34) -- will be 30 or older when next season starts.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, in some ways, playing the Mavs is like playing against his own team. But, after a lot of wheeling and dealing by owner Mark Cuban, the Mavs have more quality players than the Spurs have.

"Dallas has got arguably the best depth in the league and is talented right down the line," Popovich said. "They've got a lot of scorers...,and Avery [Johnson has] done a fantastic job in bringing defense into the equation and making it a priority for that group.

"He's added bodies. [DeSagana] Diop and [Erick] Dampier do a good job inside for them, so he's got some shot blockers and defense there. Both with personnel and with strategy or system, he's changed it around."

That's precisely what the Spurs need to do. Change it around.

Or else they could be facing a similar fate against the Mavs or Suns next season in the playoffs."

The article is basically true with age, dollars and quotes supporting the notion that the Spurs need to make some adjustments to their roster....and they will. Adding three 30+ players to the roster last summer made the Spurs older.

The only premise I disagree with is the one that there will be no other championships for the Spurs. Just because the Spurs were one missed 4-footer or one clean catch and putback away from playing in the WCF again after an overly-zealous, silly foul with a 3-pt lead doesn't mean the Spurs are living in the land of lost causes.

The Spurs have some nice options from previous drafts that other teams still playing don't appear to have and they still have the ability to attract free agents at decent prices. I wouldn't say they are ready to be put out to pasture and stud just yet.

"Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, in some ways, playing the Mavs is like playing against his own team."

When the "Little General (of the Spurs)" and a former long-time Spurs' assistant coach plot strategy and defenses, there is little wonder as to why this is true.

Such crappy talk coming from a guy whose team was bamboozled by a Phoenix team that had its main man Amare Stoudemire on the DL. Imagine if Amare was playing during that series, Kobe would've been disemboweled when Amare goes up for one his patented slams. Or maybe Lamar Odom, Chris Mihm, Smush Parker & Andrew Bynum would've peed in their pants when Steve Nash throws an alley oop pass to Amare. Geez they led 3 - 1 and needed only 1 more game to wrap it up. One more game. Do they finish the job? No. They choke. Guys like Boris Diaw, Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa run rings around the Fakers for the next 3 games. And in Game 7 they completely obliterate the Lakers. I guess Kobe went home crying again. And then Kobe "The Ultimate Ballhog" Bryant is exposed for what he really is. A pretender. Yeah yeah he maybe has 3 rings. But he only got those rings because he had the The Big Aristotle in the middle who turned his wayward shots and airballs into 2nd chance points. Window of oppurtunity closed? Don't make me laugh. As long as we have Tim, Tony, Manu, Robert, Bruce, Michael we will always compete. As for your team maybe you need to trade Ballhog Bryant so other players on your team get to touch the ball and then and maybe then you can advance beyond the 1st round.

Go, ahead, count the Spurs out next year. We always play better being the underdog anyway.

Is anyone is really stupid enough to believe the Spurs have no chance to win the Championship next year? (besides Laker fans who think that keeping Kobe and getting rid of Shaq was a good thing...) :rolleyes

The Spurs are going to be perennial favorites as long as Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan are alive. If Duncan's game was based solely on athletic prowess, naturally you'd expect a decline in productivity as he ages. Duncan however is probably the most fundamentally sound and complete player in the NBA and being multi-faceted skill-wise means he'll be productive in a lot of areas for years to come. If an aging big man with half of Duncan's skills like the 36-year-old P. J. Brown can still put in major minutes and put up major contributions (in P.J.'s case, rebounds and D) then Duncan can. Anyways, Manu is only 28, Parker is only 24, and Van Exel and Mohammed will be off the books next year so it's not like SA will be totally ancient next year.

Barry (34) - Trade Bait? Even if he stays he still has game and is clutch
Bruce Bowen (35) - One of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA
Duncan (30) - Gezz He needs no explanation, for the love of God he's Tim Duncan!
Finley (33) - Great production off the bench
Horry (36) - Hurt all year and not in game shape.
Rasho Nesterovic (30) - I personally can't stand him but I'm sure half the teams in the NBA would like to have an extra 7 footer on their team
Van Exel (34) - Retiring

So whats the problem. The Fakers wish they had half these players on thier team. Go away....
