Janusz Liberkowski, 52, is a mechanical engineer in San Jose, California. He and his wife are the loving parents of one-and-a-half year old twins. Janusz' older daughter Anecia passed away in a car accident seven years ago, which inspired Janusz to create this revolutionary seat, in the hopes that it will save children's lives. Janusz and his wife are very active in their local Polish community.
His invention was the Spherical Safety Seat... A new kind of infant car seat where the baby sits inside nested spheres instead of the usual seat. In a collision, the spheres spin and automatically position the child's neck and back so that they are perpendicular to the impact force, thus shielding the baby from the destructive force of the impact
At the end of the show the development consultant of Evenflo, the top manufacturer of child safety seats came out and dedicated all the resources Evenflo can provide to helping Janusz to make his invention a reality. He also won one million dollars

The runner-up was Ed Hall and his invention, a word/spelling game called Word Ace. While he didn't win the one million dollar prize, before they ushered him off stage to congratulate Janusz they had one of the scouts for Hasboro come out and tell Hall that Hasboro planned to make Word Ace a reality as well. So even though he wasn't named the American Inventor, he is still what the judges called "a 6 letter word beginning with W" (winner for those illiterate folks).
