Word is we're signing him. Thought he was restricted, but Chicago didn't need another SF with Nocioni, Deng and ERob.

Spurs Sign Linton Johnson III

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed forward Linton Johnson III. Per club policy terms of the contract were not released.
The 6-8, 205-pound Johnson spent a majority of the 2003-04 campaign with the Chicago Bulls. For the season he appeared in 41 games for Chicago – with 20 starts – averaging 4.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per contest. Johnson first signed with the Bulls on September 29, 2003. He appeared in 18 games with Chicago before being waived on January 6. On January 9, Johnson signed with the Rockford Lightning in the CBA where he averaged 15.6 points and 8.5 rebounds in 21 games. He then re-joined the Bulls on February 28 - signing a 10-day contract with the team - and spent remainder of the season with Chicago.

Johnson played four seasons at Tulane University averaging 6.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 107 career games. He went unpicked in the 2002 NBA Draft after averaging 9.0 points and 6.5 boards as a senior during the 2001-02 season.

Blocked at least one shot in about half his games. Always a plus.

Of course he's IR fodder, but if he can defend well....

Is it a guranteed contract or is it a "see what you can do in camp" signing.

does this mean no mailman?

Solid D

Guys, this is not a "big" or pivot player. He's a 6'-8" swingman. It does not preclude the Spurs from signing Malone or any other "big" to a veteran minimum contract.

He's more of a defensive player with size to guard the perimeter. He ranked #18 in the NBA in Steals Per 48 Minutes(2.42).

yeah 14 players would spurs carry 15?

He's as close to a tall SF defender as we're going to get at this point.

Good pick up -- he fills the role of that long 3.

This is a very good signing. We saw him play Rocky Mountain Revue and I told Kori many times that he'd be the perfect long three for the Spurs. He's an awesome defender, very wiry and has a great attitude (he was the Chicago team captain and was helping the young peeps on the team). His shot is erratic but I saw him working on it.

As far as long threes go, this was the guy I wanted. He'll be buried on the bench but he'll be useful when you need a guy to defend against the Odoms and Nowitzkis.

Holy crap! I totally forgot he was in the summer league and the guy I was really impressed with when I saw the Bulls play.

I remember asking either Kori or LJ about him.

Hell yeah, great signing!

Won't play more than eight minutes this year.

Can't shoot to save his crack stash.

Insignificant signing to say the very least.

Walton,

know of anyone else that is out there that is better that they could sign??

:Q

Already know the answer, just waiting for the diatribe.

ChumpDumper

If he can come off the bench and block four shots against a playoff team or outboard Ben and Rasheed Wallace like he did last season, that would be significant.

Who said anything about somebody better out there?

This is a guy that will sit on IR all year long- if he even makes the team.

How is this signing more significant than the Spurs inking a new waterboy?

Too many fans get excited over the smallest, most irrelevant shit. If you visit Lakers forums, they're excited about the development of Brian Cook for christsake.

This is not newsworthy.

ok solid D lets get it straight.

Pop is a moron, cause he likes pasty white euros.

Then

We must sign this euro shooter

Then we must sign black americna players

then Linton Johnson sucks.

And Sequ has the audacity to say to other people that they are morons??

Sequ is out of control.

It's newsworthy in that the Spurs need to have some younger players to develop on IR for the coming years when they are over the cap.

He won't see much playing time, but he's a wiry defensive 3 that the Spurs can use in spot minutes if need be. If they let him sit on IR all year, they can groom him and see if he can develop a shot -- if not, there's no loss.

Next move I want the Spurs to make this summer is to give Tony his contract extension.
