Pop recently said in his radio show (as reported in this forum, IIRC) that the Spurs needed/wanted a "Derrick McKey type" forward who could play either forward position this summer.

Derrick McKey, for those of you just joining us, was a 6'10" 240 lbs. 15 year NBA vet who played for the Sonics and Pacers primarily with a final year stint in Philly. He indeed was able to play either the 3 or 4. Good range on his shot, decent rebounder, decent scorer and decent defender.

As I have looked over the list of available free agents, one name comes to mind when I think of Pop's description.

Yes, Keith Van Horn (http://www.nba.com/playerfile/keith_van_horn/index.html).

There's no other free agent or, for that matter, player in the league who is close to fitting McKey's profile.

Spurs have sucked the last two decades that the season has ended in 6-7 and then got the #1 draft pick because of it, so he's coming.

McKey himself. He will only be 40 years old for the 2007 playoffs.
After all, he is 3 years younger than Malone.

Please don't remind me. I almost hurled when I came to the same conclusion.

The only difference is that McKey was a much, much better defender.

If the Spurs even call KVH I'm going to call for RC's head.

It is weird because I was actually thinking earlier this week what it would be like to have KVH on the team.

I don't remember why- my mind wanders. :angel

Anyway, I didn't know what we would do with him and decided against the idea.

It is funny though how my thoughts coincided with this thread. Must be something in the air.

I'm sorry, there's nothing quick about Keith Van Horn. I thought we were looking for someone athletic, not a shorter version of Shawn Bradley.

dallas looking to give terry pay day
so they might not want to keep 14 mil KVH when they have TWO big man like dampier and diop.

remember when mavs needed big man now they have two good ones. WHen they aquired dampier he was suposed to be their now we have good defense big man but oddly enough it was dipo that is actual getting more mins.
Ofocurse they might still want someone to throw at shaq if they meet again.

I think KVH makes lots of threes an hey that is our game we got barry just to do that. KVH vet min going from one championship contender to a championship team like spurs. Some what likely. SO as a starter HELL NO. as a guy of the bench I think it actual is a good idea. Isn't oberto taking KVHs "slot" on team already though

Ironically enough, a few years ago, when responding to all the comparisons to Larry Bird, Keith Van Horn himself said he wasn't comfortable with those comparisons and compared himself to Derrick McKey.

I think KVH could still do some things with the right amount of minutes. Don't expect much defense though.

I've read that Seattle will likely sign Gelabale this summer. If they do it, Noel Felix will have to compete with one more guy to play SF.

Gelabale is being brought in as the backup SG (if they can buyout him), who will sometimes swing to SF. Noel will play SF/PF.

I would have to think the Spurs are aware of Felix by this point. If they don't want him, it's not for lack of not realizing he is there.

The Spurs can't sign Noel. He's already under contract with the Sonics (though not guaranteed). But yes, the Spurs are fully aware of him -- he was DPOY in the CBA, so they kept tabs on him all last season.

I didn't know they will use him at SG (SF is his best position to me). There is too Damien Wilkins but you should know Sonics situation way better than me. As an outsider (and if Sonics don't do a trade this summer), I think that Noel Felix will have more playtime available at PF than SF next year.

He signed for the remainder of last season, plus a unguaranteed contract for 2006-07. They have to guarantee him by January but up until then, he can't talk to other teams unless they release him. So he's automatically on their summer league team, in their training camp, etc unless something drastic happens.

They think that Gelabale is too small (6'5?) to guard small forwards in this league. So, supposedly, they are going to try to use him more at SG. He's almost the same size as Wilkins I believe.

Noel prefers to play PF (he never played SF in his life until the Sonics) so he doesn't mind. He just wants to make the league in any capacity.

There's probably going to be major changes in Seattle this summer anyway. So who knows what happens. Mikki Moore probably isn't picking up his player option because he wants more playing time. There's rumors that they are going to try to make a blockbuster move that could include any of Wilcox/Collison/Ridnour/Fortson/one of the young centers.

KVH is going to have a ring, so we could use his championship experience. If he doesn't win, we could trade for Antoine Walker.

Solid D
06-10-2006, 07:45 PM
The Spurs have needed a 4/3 or long SF for several seasons. McKey played excellent defense so that's why KVH is a scary thought...because he doesn't play D.

Pop tried to sign Ulker's (Turkey) Karem Gonlum last June since he's a fairly mobile 6-10 Forward (PF) who defends pretty well. Efes ended up signing him though.

Yeah, I'm not so clear on how Van Horn is like McKey. McKey was a glue guy who played great defense and hustled. I'm not sure what Van Horn is good at, except suddenly hitting backbreaking threes against the Spurs in a Game 7.

I'd take the Derrick McKey reference as one that specifically excludes Keith Van Horn, since the two share virtually no basketball qualities.

My hunch, though, that Pop has someone in mind; the reference was a bit obscure unless you are targeting someone who specifically reminds you of Derrick McKey. And I be shocked if the Spurs believe that they'll get their McKey-type through domestic, unrestricted free agents.
