A final debunking of the "Avery hit the winning shot" BS. The Spurs got up 2 more shots after Avery's "game winner", and they were just wasting time and killing the clock. Had they still needed a score, they had 27 seconds after the stop they got on the other end.

Not me...for one I am a Mavs fan. Secondly without Kobe SHaq doesn't win in LA. People always rip Kobe and sure he seems to be an ass but dude is awesome. Shaq is getting way too big a head...just listen to him..."I'm the best athlete and 32 year old in history"....yeah right...how about you concentrate on making free throws and stop talking smack lol.

For someone who roots for a team owned by Cuban, perhaps you're being a bit harsh.

Ummm all you Spurs homers love to attack Cuban but face it he is one of the best owners in the NBA. Sure he can do/say things that are questionable but dude has every right to. He acts the way he does because he is a fan 1st and owner second. Pretty sure all fans act much the same way only they don't have a camera in front of them. I have NO doubt if he was the Spurs owner all you homers would love him and defend his every move....so grow up.

Van Gundy coached the Knicks very poorly in '99... "Don't take the first shot, wait for the best shot..." yeah, that was a great strategy against the Twin Towers defense.

I am a Spurs fan and at best tolerate Shaq,

However, Kobe has made his job in L.A. way harder than it had to be.

A little more decency towards Shaq and Kobe probably could have avoided these past two summers of such extended fishing trips.

Karma hurts.

No reason to be hostile...just giving my opinion. If you don't think Shaq is arrogant then you are mistaken. Also, I want to Spurs to do well have no problem with that.

Anyone who thinks Shaq is serious with much of what he says to the media -- no matter his facial expressions or tone -- is delusional.

In a lot of ways, Shaq gets it: it's all a game, what happens on the floor and what happens off the floor. He's a big kid and he knows that he makes things happen. He says things to stir the pot and to keep people talking, largely because it's good for the Shaq brand (as a general commodity). That's all it is.

But he is absolutely right about one thing -- for all of his career, he has been one of the dominant athletes in sports; and, in the end, he'll be one of the dominant athletes in the history of basketball and American sports. You can dislike him for whatever reason, but at bottom, Shaq is a good guy, a good showman, and a greatly effective basketball player.

Amarelooms
06-11-2006, 01:50 PM
Sure Shaq is great but he has never impressed me to say the he's one of the best players ever. How has is improved his game? What has he added? He's dominant because he knows how to use his height/size that he was blessed with. He has not worked on his weaknesses...example being able to hit even a 10ft jumper or free throws. He gets way too much credit.........

He's arguably among the most effective players ever, even with whatever weaknesses you want to attribute to him.

He's been the player who was mostly responsible for 3 different franchises reaching the Finals a total of 6 different times. That's not just some accident or some stroke of luck -- and it's not like Robert Horry who was a very significant role player on 6 Finals teams, but never the straw that stirred the drink. It's always been about Shaq with his teams and whether he can take teams there. And repeatedly, he has done it -- with different groups of teammates, different coaches, and always with teams trying to figure out how to play against him. Even you choose to dislike Shaquille, I don't see how anyone can genuinely discount his achievements without losing all objectivity.

Back to Game 5 in 1999 -- it's quite easy to forget just how good Tim Duncan was in that series with Mavericks fans coming around and telling us that Avery Johnson won the title for the Spurs. Timmy was remarkable -- the turnaround bank shot he hit to start the 4th of Game 5 over Dudley was amazing. He owned the Knicks on the baseline, too, with a face up hook shot later in the quarter.

The other thing that was striking to me, seeing that again now for about the 17th time, was the difference in the physicality of the game. The soft, touch crap that gets players to the line in today's NBA would have been laughed at in 1999.

ashbeeigh
06-11-2006, 02:01 PM
And in the 1999 game why didn't the Knicks foul at the end? We were all sitting in the living room watching the game in our pajamas yelling at the TV, knowing the outcome, "why didn't they foul? Why didn't they foul?"

Amarelooms
06-11-2006, 02:12 PM
The only time when Shaq has won has been with Kobe who many consider the 2nd best player ever. If the game is close in the 4th Shaq is USELESS cause of his free throw shooting. Is he a top 10 center of all time...yes. Is he dominant...yes. Is he an all around complete player and one of the best ever...absolutely not.

I watched that 99 Game 5 as well. It stressed the importance of getting stops, dominating the middle and rebounding.

The game plan that should've been utilized again this year.

Pop sucks.

That strategy worked very well with a lightning-quick David Robinson who cleaned up any penetrator who got past his man. How many times, watching that game, did a Knick seem like he had a wide-open lane, only to have DRob swoop in seemingly from nowhere and block or change the shot?

Has there ever been another help defender like David Robinson in the past 30 years?

You simply can't mention DRob in the same sentence as that other guy.

Your answer was Diop.

FromWayDowntown

Diop does some things well, but he'll never be a help defender (or a defender, period) in the David Robinson class. You might as well compare Marquis Daniels to Michael Jordan as an NBA scorer, or Devin Harris to John Stockton as a point guard.

I'm just comparing Diop in "help defense". Diop doesn't do much else but help defense he is about as active as I've seen this year. Ben Wallace has taken a step down to what he used to be. It was the combo of David Robinson and Tim Duncan that made it so hard to get in the paint. It could be close to the same with Diop and Duncan since Dirk obviously isn't as good of a help defender as Duncan.

And we're reminding you that even just in terms of help defense, Diop couldn't hold a candle to David Robinson. Help defense is a great deal more than rotating over on ball penetration. Diop is improving as a help defender, but he's nowhere near the help defender that David Robinson ever was.
