In light of the recent guitarist thread, who are some of your favorite bassists? here are a few of mine, in no particular order:
Bill Laswell
Bootsy Collins
Les Claypool
Charles Mingus
Jaco Pastorius
Stanley Clarke
Chris Squire (from Yes, Roundabout rules)

How can you say that Newsted ruined the band?
His music never made the albums. I think only two songs used some of his stuff.
He was my favorite band member. He wanted to keep the band hard and heavy.
He never had any say so in the music or direction that Metallica went!! How did he ruin the band?!?!?!!?

every album they made after him sucked in comparison to the ones before. lars and hetfield ran the band into the ground and they actually ruined it, but newsted didn't help.
