OXNARD, California (AP) -- Two police officers patrolling a beach in an SUV on Monday ran over and killed a sunbather, authorities said.
The officers did not immediately realize they ran over the woman and continued driving, police Cmdr. Tom Chronister said in a statement.
The officers, who were not immediately identified, had stopped on a small berm of sand to watch a swimmer who they believed to be in distress. When they saw the swimmer was fine, they drove over the berm and apparently over the woman's head, authorities said.
A witness called the Oxnard Fire Department to report the woman was bleeding on the beach just south of the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort. The woman, Cindy Conolly, 49, of Sioux City, Iowa, was in town for her son's wedding, said Mike Feiler, senior deputy medical examiner in the Ventura County coroner's office.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday. The officers have been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.
Oxnard is located about 55 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

if they had saved a woman instead of killed her they would have been in a 'Tahoe', not a 'SUV'

I'd assume they wouldn't be able to accidentally run YOU over without turning on the "4x4" mode.

Stupid cops, instead of saving people, they are killing them.

Paid Leave? That's fishy.
Anyways, did the cops continue driving after they ran her over? Because according to the article, a third party called in 9-11, not the cops. How did they not realize/see that they had just run over someone?

they were on a sand berm, it's like a hill so when they were driving down they wouldn't be able to see her.

ever driven on sand? I don't think you could really tell the difference between going over a small patch of sand and someone's head.

Police: Sunbather Run Over By Beach Patrol Officer
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Volusia County beach patrol officer was ticketed for allegedly running over a sunbather on Monday near Daytona Beach's Main Street Pier.
Investigators said Danielle Taylor, 20, was laying out with her eyes closed when the truck ran over her. Troopers said both tires ran over Taylor from her shoulders to her stomach.
Investigators said 20-year-veteran Officer Robert Augustynowski was warning swimmers about rip currents when it happened. Troopers cited him for careless driving.
"I've been here 30 years and I can count on one hand how many times this has happened," said Capt. Scott Petersohn of the Volusia County Beach Patrol. "It's a very rare thing for us to deal with something like this."
Taylor was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Augustynowski was very upset about the incident, officials said.

SOP for police being investigated is that they are put on paid administrative leave pending the results ... although one (prolly the passenger) is back on his beat per this article (http://www.venturacountystar.com/vcs/ox/article/0,1375,VCS_238_4807320,00.html).
The story has a few more details than the original article. A sad situation.
