Officials Make Largest Drug Bust in Middle Tennessee

Officials Make Largest Drug Bust in Middle Tennessee
It’s the largest marijuana drug bust in Middle Tennessee, and it's in the smallest county in the state.
Officials are on their way to Florida to pick up the third person in the drug operation, the District Attorney says could generate $8,000 per year.
Federal, state, and local investigators have shut down a huge pot growing and distribution operation in Trousdale County, in the Cato community. Officials there say marijuana was planted and growing in a cave that ran two miles long.
The head of this operation actually built his home above the cave, and had secret tunnels leading underground. The house had no furniture inside. The cave, 75 feet underground included underground offices, 800 marijuana plants, growing operations, cooling systems, heat lamps, and so much power it would sometimes knock out transformers to the entire community.
“ It’s a beautiful A frame house which was completely barren as far as furniture, built on top of a natural cave,” said Assistant District Attorney David Durham.
“This cave is really like something you’d see in a James Bond movie,” said Durham.
It’s enough marijuana to make those behind the operation millionaires.
“ I’ve prosecuted a lot of indoor operations. I’ve seen them under houses, in barns, but never ever would have thought of anything of this magnitude and this sophistication, this kind of money, especially in a little place like Trousdale, Tennessee.
Thousands of plants and more than $50,000 were found.
Three arrests have been made, but more are expected. Brian Gibson and Greg Compton are both in jail in Trousdale County facing drug charges. Officials are on the way to Florida to pick up the third defendant, Fred Strunk.
Members of the community say their small town has no room for drug dealers.
“I’m real proud that they caught them. And they got rid of it. So the kids around here and my grandkids maybe can have a safe environment to live in,” said Carolyn Harville. Harville runs the Dixon Spring Market.
The investigation has been going on for five years. This marijuana was not staying in the Trousdale county area. It was being trafficked out in a very sophisticated operation.
The two suspects who are in custody in Trousdale county are being held on $500,000 bond.

the $8,000/year must be a typo because later in the article they said they found $50,000 cash in the house. They probably meant $80K or $800K or maybe $8,000/month.
Those heathens.. :lol

Knowing the way cops price busts they probably meant 8 million a month. They might have a thousand kilos but price it by the street value of a single reef, and on plants they weigh the stems and roots too when they prosecute..but either way, that was a lot of bud...

Ya I dont get the pricing on that either. The first part says that the operation could generate $8000 a year, but then they say that there was enough weed to make them millionaires. I would say those cops took a couple million worth of pot for themselves...selfish bastards.

It is the smallest county in Tenn. so I reckon not everyone is thinking that building a new basement = massive drug operation.

They same way 99% of "professional" dealers get busted, more than likely...some stoner down the retail supply chain got busted and rolled on them to get a better deal...

That's what I was thinking. Those dollar amounts sound reeeeeaalllly low (surely this is wrong?: "...could generate $8,000 per year.")
I think marijuana should be legalized. But, there is a process to have that happen. And, until it is, it is ILLEGAL to grow/sell/use.

Like alcohol? That is precisely why I think it should be legalized. Then, the cops could do something worthwhile with their time...like chase and capture real criminals. And it sure would free up a ton of time in our court dockets. If alcohol is legal, pot should certainly be. Then, tax the hell out of it.

exactly.
if there was a large powerfull POT lobby then it would be legalized.
Some things I just don't get.
Like Ephedra. 8 people died over 6 yrs or so thru the improper (re: mis-use) of ephedra. So the FDA bans it.
uhm.. what about tobacco?? it causes cancer !! it kills 1,000's every year!!
but shit! we better get that damn ephedra off the shelves before another 10 people die in the next decade. :rolleyes
same thing with alcohol. Alcohol related rages leading to murder or accidents with guns, cars , etc etc, Alcohol abuse leading to incredible damage in the body, death from alcohol poinsening.
But thats. OK.
What we really need to focus on is stopping people form sitting on thier couch all day smoking weed and eating cheetos.
ya know - if the snack food industry hired some good lobbyiset I'm sure they could get pot legalized. It;s in thier own best interest.

I totally agree with ObiwanGinobili...
It is an unavoidable fact that a certain percent of the population needs and wants to get a buzz on and whether getting buzzed is legal or not they are going to do it. It's been that way for hundreds if not thousands of years. Prohibition obviously didn't work with alcohol, and it is a lot more harmful to health than smoking pot.
About the worst knock on pot is that it makes you unproductive...and governments spend billions every year finding, trying, convicting, and imprisoning pot users so they can sit in jail and be...uhhhh...unproductive? That makes a hell of a lot of sense... :rolleyes

Has anybody ever died from smoking marijuana?
drinking alcohol?
smoking/chewing tobacco?
taking Vioxx?
wearing Guidant pacemakers?

the cops will know this shit when energy companies start lookin at the powerbills how can a residential home consume so much power, thats why its better to have a solar panels or windmills :D

06-15-2006, 04:31 AM
I dunno, a residential home with 50 windmills seems the same as paying $40,000 a month in electricity, as far as making yourself look suspect goes.
