View Full Version : This may be a dumb question...

...But to the refs in the NBA actually look at a video, either in slow motion or from a different angle, after some questionable calls? I know they often request to look at a slow motion video after a buzzer beater type of situation to make sure the player got off the shot in time, etc.

The reason I ask is this. I only watched the first half of the Finals last night, so I'm going by this. But in that time I found three very obvious bad, mistaken calls by the refs. All of which, if they had just taken a few seconds to re-watch the video in slow motion, they too could have seen it was wrongly called. Here are the plays in question (all of which BTW, were against the Mavs):

1) Dwayne Wade goes for what appears to be a baseline layup, however you can tell the ball wsa nowhere near the basket, nor was it going there. It was clearly meant for an alley-oop pass to Shaq, who did in fact dunk the ball. Instead, refs wave off the basket (stating it was after the whistle) and Mavs get called for a shooting foul, Wade goes to the line for 2.

2) Jason Terry goes for a fast break layup, gets the layup and gets fouled. However, the basket is waved off, despite the replays in slow motion clearly showing that the ball was headed towards the basket and that it was not a KVH who committed the goal tending, it was in fact Alonzo Mourning. So, instead of a 3 point play, Terry gets 2 FT's.

3) Stackhouse steals the ball from Wade near the sidelines, there's some sort of scramble on the side, all Wade did was jump into the air, while both were trying to get the ball, and somehow the refs call a foul on Stackhouse, which sends Wade to the line since the Mavs were in the penalty :wtf

I'm sure there were plently more suspicious calls (perhaps some even towards the Heat). The point is, these calls could easily have been made right if the refs just took a few seconds to look at the replays on video. So, do they do this often during a game or no?

i think ronnie nunn (sp?) the director of officiating, and his staff, go over the tapes and makes recommendations to the refs about their calls. they have a show on nbatv where he explains why certain calls are made and if they are valid or not. i don't know about during the game though.
