View Full Version : My Birthday Gift - New Dog!
Kori Ellis
06-14-2006, 05:49 PM
One of my birthday gifts from LJ is that I'm getting a second dog.
If you don't know the history of my first dog (Deuce AKA Looter) he was a Hurricane Katrina rescued dog that we adopted. He's a black lab about 2 years old. He's super cool but he's very needy. For example, when he's sitting in the room with us, if one of us gets up and leaves, he cries til we come back. Even though the other of us is still next to him. He also has some sort of panic attack when we leave the house. He won't eat or drink the whole time we are gone and just paces around frantically crying. Needless to say, he has some abandonment issues. :lol
Anyway, we are adding a second dog - a male chocolate lab who is 1 year and 3 months old. He belongs to an older lady who doesn't have time for him. So we are going to go pick him up in about an hour.
I will post pictures later.

How do you go on vacation then? i mean thats sad... have you tried anything to get him to be normal...? someone needs a shrink

We have not gone on vacation since we've had him. But when we do, we will have someone who he knows stay here.
He's getting a little better as time goes on but still panics a lot. We both work from home, so he hangs with us everyday.
He's also very afraid of water. He doesn't like you to turn on the sink if he's near it or shake a bottle of water around him.

Here's some preliminary pictures of the new dog laying outside on our deck.
He and Deuce met and seemed to like each other. But LJ's not home, so I don't have them together right now because I don't want to handle it if they start fighting or something. So he's outside and Deuce is inside.

male dogs usually hump each other at some point. it's a show of dominance. congrats on the new dog and giving a home to two dogs who needed it. my parents had usually got purebreds, but i realize now giving a home to a dog who doesn't have one is best. my brother has a brittany spaniel/lab mix, and i have a rottweiler/lab mix - the rott/lab is the gentlest dog i have ever met, and actually runs away when my 15 month old daughter harasses him.

When dealing with Labrador Retrievers do not forget about the importance of DOGA (http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40352000/jpg/_40352975_yogabody6.jpg)....Yoga for Dogs... (http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40352000/jpg/_40352963_yogadogbody1.jpg)
My Yellow Lab used to run around the back yard, dig holes, bark at the mailman or any stranger who would come near the house...She had boundless energy & when we would go to the park she would chase a tennis ball for hours....My Dogs Therapist said that this was a classic expression of low self esteem...
My choices were to start her on Doggie Prozac or start DOGA Classes immediately....My Dog & I started the DOGA Training and my Lab is like a new person...She now practices her Yoga, on her own.... (http://wgnradio.com/shows/kathy_judy/photos/dogsmile/inter4.jpg)

Yeah I know. I'm just talking about the constant wrestling becoming less frequent. It was 4am and they were still wrestling in our bedroom last night. And now Deuce has a small cut on his head. But currently (right this second) they have simmered down to the point they are both laying under my desk and are relatively calm.
