Leave out the "history of" on google and you get a bunch of links, to nonprofits and the like. Those nonprofit sites should have a lot of information for you. It also depends on what kind of criminal offense you're talking about, because there are several organizations that are targeted for drug users, etc.

You can start with Cain, I suppose. Although he seems to have not undergone any sort of formal rehabilitation.

Smiting counts as rehabilitation, doesn't it?

Cain was the smiter, not the smitee.

Cain did smite. And then Cain was smote in return.

When did Cain get smote (smited?)? I thought he just was made a vagabond and his crops wouldn't grow anymore.

Ah, I guess smite can also mean chastise.

smite P Pronunciation Key (smt)
v. smote, (smt) smit·ten, (smtn) or smote smit·ing, smites
v. tr.
1.a. To inflict a heavy blow on, with or as if with the hand, a tool, or a weapon.
1.b. To drive or strike (a weapon, for example) forcefully onto or into something else.
2. To attack, damage, or destroy by or as if by blows.
3.a. To afflict: The population was smitten by the plague.
3.b. To afflict retributively; chasten or chastise.
4. To affect sharply with great feeling: He was smitten by deep remorse.

Pretty weak if you ask me.

"We can either smite you with this brick upside your head, or we can smite you with a stern rebuke. Now which shall it be?"

I had always considered God's curse to be equivalent to smiting. I guess it's all relative.

And no problem, thispego.

I doubt you will find an entire book on this in your library's catalog unless your school focuses on this area quite a bit. You would, I assume, have access to electronic and online databases through which you can search for articles-- like NCJRS Abstracts; LexisNexis; Academic Search Premier; ProjectMuse (all ProjectMuse articles are full-text)...

For college, electronic databases which provide access to scholarly publications are infinitely better and more appropriate sources than internet sites. Google scholar might get you some good hits for appropriate articles- but many are not full-text.
