NEW YORK (AP) -- David Stern has a new No. 2 man for the first time in his tenure as commissioner.

Adam Silver officially became the NBA's deputy commissioner Saturday when Russ Granik's retirement became effective.

Granik announced in October that he would leave his position following the end of this season, and Silver was unanimously elected to replace him in April.

Noting that he has worked with Silver for the last 14 years, Stern said Friday that he expected the transition, "to be as smooth as it can possibly be."

The 43-year-old Silver joined the NBA as an assistant to Stern in 1992 and has served as the president of NBA Entertainment since 1997. He will continue to oversee that division as the deputy commissioner.

Also taking effect Saturday are the appointments of Joel Litvin to president of league and basketball operations, and Heidi Ueberroth as president of global marketing partnerships and international business operations. Both promotions were announced along with Silver's in April.

"We have a very energetic team in place," said Stern, who predicted "an extraordinary season to follow what has been our best season to date."

Granik, the NBA's second in command for all of Stern's 22 years as commissioner, will remain an adviser to the league. Stern said he will call, "whenever I need him, whenever we need him. He's an NBA lifer."
