Patriots' Sullivan arrested
By Jerome Solomon, Globe Staff | June 30, 2006

Patriots defensive lineman Johnathan Sullivan was arrested early Sunday morning in Griffin, Ga., and charged with several offenses, including misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

``I can't really comment on the matter except to say that we're obviously going to rigorously defend Johnathan against these charges," Sullivan's agent Len Rowe said.

Picked No. 6 overall by the Saints in 2003, Sullivan has had a disappointing NFL career. He spends much of the offseason in Griffin, a small community about 40 miles south of Atlanta, where he held a youth day for area youngsters over the weekend.

``We are aware of the report and will handle the matter internally," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said.

Sullivan, 25, was pulled over by police at 3:56 a.m. after allegedly running two stop signs.

In the police report obtained by the Globe, officer M.G. Bowman said after he stopped the car for the traffic violations, he ``observed in plain view a clear bag that had a small baggy of a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana."

He said he asked Sullivan if there was a weapon in the car, and Sullivan informed him there was a pistol near the armrest of the front seat. The officer retrieved a .45 caliber gun and asked Sullivan and his passenger, Tamarco Clemons, if there was anything illegal in the car.

The officer claims the pair said no, and gave him permission to search the car.

At one point, according to the report, Clemons told the officer the bag belonged to him. Sullivan has no arrest record and according to a family source has never failed a drug test in the NFL or while he played at the University of Georgia.

Sullivan was booked and charged with a noise violation for playing the music in his car too loud (the reason the officer gave for originally following the car), not wearing a seatbelt, running two stop signs and possession of fewer than an ounce of marijuana. Clemons was charged with marijuana possession and a seatbelt violation. They were released on Griffin Police signature bonds and are scheduled to appear in court July 20.
