Joe Torre initially reiterated Friday that, if given a choice, he would prefer to acquire some pitching help rather than a big bat by the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
But then he reconsidered, mentioned how hard the Yankees have had to work to produce runs lately and ultimately said it's a "coin flip" to him.
"Either way you want to go, you can make a case for it," Torre said during batting practice, "whether we need more pitching or we could use more stability offensively."
General manager Brian Cashman sidestepped the same question, saying, "Right now there's no bat or arm that's available at a cost I like."
He wouldn't call Double-A pitcher Phil Hughes untouchable, but he said, "There's some guys you can have a longer conversation about than others."
Trainer's room
Octavio Dotel's first time pitching off a mound in more than two weeks, originally scheduled for Saturday, was pushed back until Wednesday at the earliest. The change was made to add a few days of throwing off flat ground to build up his arm strength. Dotel, nearly 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery, is expected back by the end of the month ... Robinson Cano (left hamstring strain) hit and threw Friday, and the Yankees are cautiously optimistic that he will be ready to come off the disabled list right after the All-Star break ... Carl Pavano could throw off a mound as early as later next week. He had surgery in May to remove a bone chip in his right elbow.
Extra bases
George Steinbrenner arrived about 10 minutes before the first pitch and immediately was surrounded by a horde of print and television reporters. He answered only one question, saying, "I feel good about 'em," when asked about his team ... Public-address announcer Bob Sheppard left after the first inning because of laryngitis, the team said. Rick Cerrone, the team's senior director of media relations, subbed for Sheppard ... Tampa-based director of player development Pat Roessler was in uniform during batting practice at the request of Cashman. "This year I want to make sure our roving instructors are here in uniform at times, just like they go to all of our other clubs," Cashman said.
