Harrington won't accept the Knicks' money

July 1, 2006 -- Hawks small forward Al Harrington spoke in December about his love for the Knicks and playing for Isiah Thomas, considering him family. But Harrington still wants to get paid.

The free agent from Elizabeth, N.J., can begin negotiating with other NBA teams today, but Thomas will have to negotiate with the Hawks first.

Harrington's manager, Reginald Marble, told The Post that Harrington won't accept the $5 million mid-level exception, all the Knicks can offer because they're $70 million over the league's salary cap.

The other avenue to acquire Harrington is a sign-and-trade with Atlanta. Unless Atlanta is interested in Steve Francis, that's a long shot.

It is why Thomas made his blockbuster remarks at Thursday's press conference, saying he's ready go to war with what he has come training camp, a dig at Larry Brown.

The free-agent market is mediocre and Thomas has low expectations about using the mid-level exception.

Washington small forward Jared Jeffries is another candidate, but Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld is expected to match the mid-level offer.

Thomas has two of his own free agents to re-sign, center Jackie Butler and Qyntel Woods, a Brown pickup. Thomas wants to re-sign them cheaply and gave no assurances.

Butler is a bigger priority; Thomas saved him from the CBA two years ago. The Knicks would have to use one of their exceptions to re-sign Woods. The Knicks already have 16 guaranteed contracts, one over the limit.

Butler's agent, Keith Glass, son of Brown's agent, said he thinks Butler will get a bigger deal elsewhere that Thomas won't match.

"We'll continue to be in opportunistic mode," said Thomas, who ruled out chasing point guards Mike James and Speedy Claxton. "If we can better our team, we will. I don't sit here in the mode from two years ago and say I gotta do something."

Thomas puts his coaching hat on tomorrow when the Knicks' summer league team holds its first practice in Las Vegas (play begins July 7). Thomas feels his greatest mission now is coaching, bettering the current cast, not adding to it.

"The guys we have, we'll make them better," Thomas said. "We got a job to do."

Thomas will run the practices, Mark Aguirre the bench. The roster has the Knicks' two first-round picks, Renaldo Balkman and Mardy Collins, and last year's rookies, David Lee, Nate Robinson and Channing Frye, who may play half the games. Thomas said Frye, returning from a partial knee tear, may be limited.

Thomas considered coaching in Sin City to shake off the rust. He coached the Pacers' summer-league team his first season in Indiana.

"I've tasted it," Thomas said. "I know how it is. I hadn't tasted it [in Indiana]. That was my first year of coaching. I wanted to get the feel and the mechanics of the game. I have a pretty good feel for it."

I don't see why.
Harrington want just more than the MLE and is worth more than that.
However, I think indiana will try to get him since they have lost Peja.

Either he's real greedy or hes not as stupid as we thought he was, for turning down knicks.

How is he greedy?

He deserves more than the MLE.

SA doesn't have more than the MLE to offer. Indy doesn't have more than the MLE to offer. Are you catching my drift yet?

The way to get Harrington is to do a S&T with Atlanta.

Scola & Nazr with a double sign-and-trade?? *shrug* Doubtful, but it's possible I guess. Atlanta would be silly to lose him for nothing, as Harrington is definetly good enough to command something on the market. The question is, will Holt want to sign Harrington to a big money deal when Harrington doesn't really fit the Spurs system. He's a great player, and is worth a big contract, but is he worth a big contract with the Spurs?? Guess we'll find out.

They can use Brent Barry and if they don't want him, a deal like that can work :
Spurs trade Barry + Oberto + 1st round pick for Harrington
Bobcats trade nothing for Barry
Hawks trade Harrington for Oberto + first round pick.

The first round pick can either be Spurs 2007 first round pick or a pick that we get by trading Scola's rights.

A first round pick + Oberto (he isn't very good but he is quite cheap) is a good deal for a player who is an unrestricted free agent.

Well, it's more plausable than Nazr, who's already made that stop on his NBA lifetime tour, but I don't see what Charlotte gets out of this. I doubt they're hot and bothered enough about Barry to just straight absorb his salary using their caproom.

I wouldn't give up a pick even a late first rounder in an '07 draft that is shaping up to be one of the best ever.

Charlotte need some vets and they need a shooting SG : Barry fills that need and his contract has the perfect length for Charlotte.

Charlotte and Chicago both have a lot of good young players and have midget guards. They could use a tall guard but I think the best deal we could have gotten for Barry fell apart and we're not going to get much for him.

If I were trying to cut a deal for Harrington, it would probably be a 3-yeay deal starting with Williams. Atlanta can generally afford to take on salary, but they have trouble getting free agents to sign there. Ship Williams's expiring contract as cap relief to a third team, who can in turn send someone useful but overpaid to Atlanta -- presumably a a center or PG. Add other sweeteners to the deal as needed: picks, Beno, Oberto, etc.

And yes, I realize they can't do a Williams deal until August, but they can agree on it now, and just wait until then to finalize it.

This isn't a likely deal to happen, but it's not impossible.

If Foster is really on the market, another possibility would be something like Barry to Indiana, Foster to Atlanta, Beno and a pick to Atlanta, Harrington to SA.

I take Foster and his cheap contract over All harington who will cost something like $60M/6 years.
A trade like Barry+Scola for Foster is a great trade for Spurs.

I like Foster a lot too. He would be a good Spur. But I'd love to have Harrington.
