Highly unlikely but a scenario to watch for is Spurs signing one year filler contracts, trying to move Barry. It would be possible for the Spurs to get well under $45 million next summer moving Barry for a player with an expiring contract and doing one final restructure on Bowens player option year. A mediocre '06-'07 in a strong draft year, Mahinmi coming and max cap space to retool. Like I said highly unlikley, and people will say BS, but let's see who the Spurs end up trading and signing. Could easily be the best intemediate, long term plan.

if they can get pj brown it is a one year filler

I think PJ could do alright in a "one year to go all out and get a ring" type scenario. (provided he is supplied with enough metamucil and doesn't fall down and break a hip). Plus next year's big man crop might be a lot better with teams looking to trade bigs after stocking up in the '07 draft which is supposed to be loaded with them.

I agree with the logic. Giving a marginal big man - or above average, like Przybilla - a medium chunk of money for 4 years might not be the best deal.

There simply aren't a lot of players out there right now. Unfortunately, this may lead us to sucking worse next year than we'd like (though still be contenders). There are better players coming to the end of their deals soon (isn't Nocioni in the last year of his contract?).

The best idea might be your suggestion - find big men playing for contracts and/or legacy, like PJ Brown, who won't be a cap hit after next summer.

i like scenarios like PJ brown or Magloire that would be a 1 year solution. next year Ian is coming and we will know what javtokas is worth and the market could not be worst than this summer.

My second option would be to go with a non starter, give him a middle range deal for 3 years a la oberto and let Oberto, javtokas, bonner horry and him fight for start and time. no starter but deep bench. This way you wait for trade deadline for something better + you have williams to trash. I would go this route only if it means it gives room for an athletic 3.

Barry and scola's right and to a certain williams and oberto are assests we can still leverage

I would say BS but then I think about Francisco Elson.

spurs have the rights to 5 international players and they have 8 picks in the next 3 drafts.

Spurs are only Elson and an acute case of plantar faciitis away from Greg Oden.
