US stars align in anti-Iraq war hunger strike
by Stephen Collinson

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Star Hollywood actor-activists including Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon and anti-war campaigners led by bereaved mother Cindy Sheehan plan to launch a hunger strike, demanding the immediate return of US troops from Iraq.

As Americans get set to fire up barbeques in patriotic celebration of US Independence Day on July 4, anti-war protestors planned to savour a last meal outside the White House, before embarking on a 'Troops Home Fast' at midnight.

"We've marched, held vigils, lobbied Congress, camped out at Bush's ranch, we've even gone to jail, now it's time to do more," said Sheehan, who emerged as an anti-war icon after losing her 24-year-old son Casey in Iraq.

The hunger strike was the latest bid by the US anti-war movement to grab hold of American public opinion, after numerous marches, vigils and political campaigns.

Look at Cindy Sheehan and Susan Sarandon going Bobby Sands. Now if we could get Ann Coulter to start a counter-hunger strike.

I hope they all die of starvation. Three less nuts on this planet, and as an added bonus we'd have the Darwin Award winners for 2006.

Hunger strikers always hedge. "Well I'm drinking juices and taking vitamins" or some shit like that.

No one is going to pull a real Bobby Sands. That's too real.

BTW - I didn't know Dick Gregory was still alive anyway.

In other news.

Roseane, Oprah, Starr Jones, and the whole cast of "The View" quit the hunger strike for the patriotic red white and blue cheesecake baked by Karl ROve at yesterday's rally. After the break down in the hunger Corps, other celebrities and finally sheehan cracked and quit. Ally Mcbeal, though, is still going on strong.

This picture of Cindy Sheehan was taken a mere 23 minutes after declaring the hunger strike. Sheehan declared that "the hunger pangs had become intolerable". She also stated that she was "pleased by her efforts even though her objective had not been met".
