This movie's coming out soon, based on sci fi master Philip K Dick's novel.
If it turns out to be good, Keanu Reaves has cemented himself as the current Eastwood of Sci Fi. I think it looks fucking tight, will be a great stoner movie at the very least. But I am not looking forward to the mandatory ten ripoffs of the animation technique if this movie becomes a success.
Haven't read the novel yet, but word is that its one of Phil's best. Addresses many themes (like constant surveillance, etc) that are present 30 years after he wrote it.
One last thing...is it me or is Winona Ryder getting 33% hotter in every movie?

Its about fucking time... I remember seeing previews for this movie 2 years ago. Unfortunately, Charles Schwab already ripped off the animation technique in some oddly misguided attempt to get us to buy... mutual funds?

Yeah--this isn't the first movie to use that technique (wtf is the name?), but it will definitely be the biggest draw using it.
They have been working on this movie since 2001 i think

Additionally, a 2005-06 advertising campaign by Charles Schwab uses rotoscoping for a series of television spots, under the tagline "Talk to Chuck." This distinctive look is the work of Bob Sabiston, an MIT Media Lab veteran who brought the same "interpolated rotoscoping" technique to the Richard Linklater film Waking Life.

The animation looks like ass...
It I was still into Acid I might get excited about it...but since I'm not, it just looks annoying.
I think I'll be passing on this one, inspite of the fact that I like the author...I can't see myself sitting through two hours of that annoying as shit animation.

Is there any particular reason to have this film in rotoscope? Is it necessary to the story, or just a gimmick they decided to use?

Something I thought as well. Apparently in the novel, the protagonist becomes addicted to this drug, and I think the rotoscope is used to portray his descent into an altered world of hallucination.

Well, this will certainly be the first movie ever to show Keanu animated.

This will be his finest performance since The Lake House.

thats not just you.
I also think she gets hotter the more screen time she gets.
but then again, I have athing for Winona and would totally lesbo it up with her at the drop of a hat.
A Scanner Darkly: I want to see this movie. I am dying to see this movie.
but Emo thinks it looks "gay" I told him he was "gay" and then he said "no - your gay" and it decnded into more stupidity from there.
so it looksliek I'll be waiting till it's on netflix.
please keep this thread updated with reviews.

Its not really "animated" its just cell shaded. they took the regular movie shots with the actors then applied the technique (which is pretty complex) to make it look hand-drawn. usually applied in video games where its no so complex to apply to 3d models (IE. Zelda the Windwaker, HalfLife 2 mods, ect) real big in 3D Studio Max

There is also some comercial out with a black guy eating a steak thats cell shaded.... this will be the first movie I know of that uses the technology though.

It sucks because of the stupid shadow flickers...it's stupid. What exactly are they trying to convey?
There is nothing redeeming about it. It enhances the viewing image in no way, visually, stylistically, artistically...nada, squat. It isn't cool looking...it's stupid looking. Irritating. Distracting. Annoying.
Just because it's different and new doesn't mean it's good. It sucks.

already mentioned, but richard linklater used this tech in waking life. this will be linklater's second movie using it. not to put a damper on things, but what was the last well adapted philip k dick story? great stories, horrible adaptations for the most part... minority report was OK, but nothing special.

just watched the movie.......phenomenal. then again, i love Linklater's work, and understand, unlike whott, why he uses rotoscope. its not animation...and it serves a purpose...

Yeah...I see a lot of mystical depth in those Charles Schwabb commercials that were using it a year before the movie came out.

It sucked.
I saw the movie...it was typical Phillip K. Dick and could have been a great movie if not for the fucking rotoscope...which was a gimmick at best. And a lame one at that.

Sadly, Blade Runner and Total Recall may have been the better adaptations; Paycheck would have benefitted by casting someone other than Ben Affleck

Bleh...the movie would have been just as good with traditional effects, there was nothing spectacular about the rotoscoping and more often than not it was a distraction.
The movie had an awesome cast and great source material...the rotoscoping actually distracted from that.
Then again, you're a guy that thinks you could beat Tony Parker in a 40 yard dash, so you obviously already on some good drugs to begin with....I don't doubt it was a heavy relevance experience for you.

Rotoscoping is the cinematic equivalent of Tylenol 3.

Rotoscoping is the cinematic equivalent of Tylenol 3.Rotoscoping is hardly new. The technique was developed in the 1930's (by the Fleischers, I believe, who did the Betty Boop cartoons) and was an animation staple for decades.
I haven't seen all of A Scanner Darkly (only a few scenes, actually), but I did see Waking Life, which was Linklater's first film using the technique. I would have liked that film just as much without the rotoscoping, but it didn't bother me to look at.

Yes, but it's previously established that you give fuck all about realism so I'm not sure how objective your opinion is on this subject.

the rotoscope took a while to get used to, but it may have helped keanu be a little more palatable. good adaptation, but i don't think i could watch it twice because of the rotoscope.
