donta smith 6-7 213 sf/sg
frans steyn 7-2 290 c
maceo baston 6-10 230 pf
kennedy winston 6-6 230 sg/sf
taquan dean 6-3 185 pg/sg

viktor sanikidze 6-8 185 sf
sergi karalov 7-1 250 c

i think we have some good players in this group who may have a shot at camp:
thomas gardner, taquan dean ,kennedy winston, donta smith,c.j. watson, maceo baston, charles lee i think may have a good shot at camp depending on how they play.it's more of a showcase of mahinmi, karalov, sanikidze to see how there development has come along and may be pick up a young sf to mold behind bruce or a young point to be are third point guard and a young atheletic 2 guard.

what does everyone think of the summer league team so far and who are your favorite players and are there players i left off the team?

So Ian is on it for sure?

That should be interesting. I'd love to see how this kid does against some decent competition.

I am interested in a couple of players: Donta Smith SF, Mahinmi PF/C, Sanikidze SF, Maceo Baston PF, and c.j. watson PG

I like Maceo Baston. He should definitely be a Spur.
Man, he can really jump.

So Ian Mahinmi is on the summer league roster FOR SURE?

YES.

Man, Mahinmi, Karaulov, and Sanikidze on our roster? Great.

And Donta Smith too! Sweet.

Maceo Baston should be on the roster. Seconded on that.

the players I listed I think have the best chances of making the team as; especially Donta Smith, if the spurs cant find a SF he would definitely be a good project for bowen to teach, he has the size and length to be Bowen's replacement

ofcourse I also hope that Sanikidze does well there is so much mystery behind him and I have never seen any video/game highlights of him

I also like Maceo Baston because he looks like a Haslem type player that we could put on Dirk, even though his age is something to worry about (30)

ChumpDumper
07-06-2006, 03:14 AM
Maceo and Donta are the only guys who have half a chance this season. If I had to make a prediction I would say neither make the roster.

Mr. Body
07-06-2006, 03:22 AM
Spurs will probably give Maceo Baston the 'Fabricio Oberto' special of $2.5M a year for 3 years. Then he'll suck.

I have a bad feeling that Mahinmi is going to average like 6 points and 3 rebounds and Spurs fans will really start jumping then.

Streakyshooter08
07-06-2006, 03:28 AM
Wasn't timvp high on Donta Smith? Do you think there are players who have a chance making the team AND help them right away? Do the Spurs have the right to sign them before other teams, if they are on their summer league team or has that nothing to do with it? (I haven't payed a lot attention on summerleages in the past, so sorry for the "dumb" question...)

ChumpDumper

Donta dunks the ball like it was talking trash about his momma. I'm high on him.

timvp

Donta Smith has a chance but he'd have to play rather well. He's a decent player but I think he needs one more year in the DLeague or overseas before he's ready for the NBA. He played at some community college or something like that so he's a ways off from being ready to play with the big boys.

Donta does enough things well enoungh that some dude will sign him from a one-game performance in scoring or rebounds or assists. Not all at once.

Is Donta playing in Las Vegas?

Are any of the Spurs players playing in both?

Will these games be televised at all?

Is there any way to get whole copies of the games?

Kori Ellis
07-06-2006, 03:59 AM
In past years, several of the games have been televised on NBATV. I don't think the schedule has come out yet though.

LJ and I are supposed to go, but I don't think we are going to be able to. :(

ChumpDumper

There is a tiny chance I could go, but I would have to rely on the advice of grizzled vets to know how to go about it.

Cool. As soon as you let me know, I'll call the Jazz people and get you a press pass. Should be easy because I've used your articles on SpursZONE before.

The games are starting at 3pm everyday but no games on Sunday or Wednesday I believe.

You'd could advise Noel for me too. :lol

Im assuming whoever performs the best between Donta Smith and Melvin Sanders will earn one of the injured reserved spots.

He's under non-guaranteed contract. The Spurs can cut him anytime and owe him nothing.

Melvin's deal has to be make-good this season. The Spurs don't do those deals any other way.

I wouldn't bet against that right now. He's perfectly capable of putting together three or four impressive games.

timvp

07-06-2006, 04:40 AM
I'm still curious what pop and R.C. have in mind for the starting center position. I'm assuming they are looking for a center via trade before they offer anyone all or a portion of the midlevel due to the quiet couple of days. Damn these quiet days!

Donta Smith to me has a lot more potential than melvin sanders. Because of his age, size, and athletic ability.

FYI, Frans played at OSU during our Final Four run here to SA a couple years ago. Because we were so stacked he never hit the field much. He was a rugby GOD in his native South Africa. He had actually never played basketball before he was brought to OSU. Sutton wanted to model him after Big Country Reeves, but at least Reeves had a basketball background. Frans never panned out, so he transfered to Southwest Baptist. He is simply huge but unbelievably mobile for his size. The problem is, when the ball comes to him he looks at it like a six year old picking up a baby bird that just fell from its nest, and doesn't know what the hell to do with it. Haven't seen him since he left OSU, but if Sutton couldn't teach him to play, doubtful SWB coaches had any better luck.
