I hope that the Spurs are one of these four teams.

New York Post - Free agent Jackie Butler, out of contract, is refusing to play with the Knicks in the summer league, the New York Post is reporting.

Keith Glass, Butler's agent, will meet with Isiah Thomas this weekend and contends four teams are willing to offer Butler more than the Knicks' $1 million qualifying offer.

And the plot thickens...

Jackie may be Isiah's boy...but that doesn't mean Isiah is Jackie's.

Bidding war of 4 teams. I wonder how much he gets. He's smart not to go back to the Knicks. No brainer, really.

I would love for the Spurs to pick him up for half of the MLE.

That dude has always looked like 40 years old to me. He is only 21, but I bet with that mug he has been buying beer since the age of 13 or so.

Half an MLE would be reasonable. Knicks have last say though and they'd likley match. That's pocket change for most Knicks' players.

Isiah will match anything. Mark my words.

He thinks he can get a couple 2nd round picks for Butler. Likely he's right.

Spurs and bidding war are not terms that make me overly optimistic.

On a related note, is it typical for teams to order a player to summer league when they don't have him signed? Seems like you can't blame the kid for refusing to go, since the Knicks aren't looking like the most loyal organization right now.

Mr.Bottomtooth

Are we seriously going so low to get Butler? The Spurs aren't gonna have him as a player who will get a role players amount of minutes. We need to get someone better and I know they will try to get someone better.

The only thing that may stop the Knicks matching is their roster is almost full. They currently have 14 players under contract. They have Butler, Qyntel Woods and the MLE to spend. I can't imagine a year where NY doesn't spend the MLE.

I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas doesn't match a multi-year deal and just goes out and uses the MLE or signs Woods.

Mr. Body

I don't see NYK using the MLE, to be honest. There's no one out there to use it on (I'm sure they'd love Bonzi) and as squiggy as Isiah is, he recognizes the roster is full to the gills. He's strangely high on Butler and is pretty possessive of him. Butler clearly wants out of Dodge, but Isiah will get someone to trade for him.

The Cavs are the one team that is willing to offer a longterm deal.

The Knicks have made a $1 million qualifying offer to free-agent center Jackie Butler, which allows them to match any offer he receives. So far, the Cavaliers are the only team believed to be considering a long-term offer.

Woods is unrestricted. Better shot of him walking.

Can't wait to see the Spurs signing not just for who they get but I still want them to show their hand on if they are taking on more than one year salary commitments.

BUSY ISIAH ALL QUIET ON FREE AGENTS

By MARC BERMAN

July 7, 2006 -- LAS VEGAS - Isiah Thomas is expending more energy on the basketball court coaching the Knicks than on the phone lines during July's free-agency period.
In a giant departure, Thomas is being passive with free agents while teams including Chicago and Toronto make bold moves. The whole thing reeks of James Dolan finally putting a cap on Thomas' NBA-high payroll.

Thomas feels the team is good enough as constituted to make the playoffs. Kenyon Martin is still being shopped as fervently as ever by the Nuggets, but the Knicks are more lukewarm than ever because of his massive contract. Thomas isn't sure he'll use his $5 million mid-level exception, a telltale sign Dolan isn't keen on adding to the payroll.

"We have our eyes on a couple of situations," Thomas said. "We're not chasing anything. I'm pretty comfortable with what we have. It's definitely going to be tough. Everyone's getting better. We have to develop and get better from within."

Thomas has to decide whether to re-sign his two free agents, Jackie Butler and Qyntel Woods. Thomas can choose only one because both signings would put the team at 16 guaranteed contracts, one over the league maximum. Re-signing Butler is the priority, as Jerome James insurance.

Woods should be available without a fight.

And Jackie Butler will fight like hell to get away from the Knicks.

Jim (SA) : John, Why don't the Spurs go after Butler and Ariza? Don't those two fit the needs the Spurs have? What about Harrington to the Spurs?

John Hollinger: (12:29 PM ET ) Not sure if you're talking about Jackie or Rasual Butler, but either way they're out of SA's price range. One thing to remember is San Antonio is very close to the luxury tax line right now -- we won't know how close til we see the new tax level on the 12th and learn how much Javtokas is costing them, but I'm guessing it's close enough that they can only do minimum deals from here on out.

Ryan, New York: Does Jackie Butler resign with the Knicks? Do you think the Knicks will remain "quiet" the entire offseason?

John Hollinger: (12:30 PM ET ) I think he will end up staying in NY, yes, because I haven't heard of anyone making a serious enough run at him that the dollars would scare the Knicks away.

Mr. Body

That really blows, but not surprising. RC saves Holt a ton of money by jetting Malik and then Rasho, then we can't bust the luxury cap by even 5 cents.

He's not THAT fucking heavy. Big O was 6'8" 300 when he came into the league, and it went up from there. 6'10" 260 is solid, not fat.

I like when people purposely misread things to try and create another argument. I said he could be not he would be or was. Have you seen him? He's definitely overweight the 260 lbs (If that's his weight) is more flab than muscle. I think he is a good player though just a concern.

Look at his right shoulder: that muscle striation and definition is not visible on an athlete with the SLIGHTEST body fat issues, say above 12%

I'll grant that you said could, but you could say that about anyone. Traylor and Miller BOTH looked FAT by his age, which would be collegiate if he had attended. He's just not showing that.

Maxim: Most fat guys are slow.

Proposition:NBA may be going to more of an up tempo game.
Proposition:Most of our serious competition has players who attack the basket with speed.

Logic: Most fat guys won't fit in or be able to defend.

I don’t know why you are all hating on the big man for never walking away from a meal. The NBA game is a fast paced game and he is just trying to keep his energy stores up.

Anyway this is an advantage for the Spurs. Offer the guy a 3 year/6 mil contract with the Malik “1-year’s worth of free Taco Cabana meals” option and you can guarantee he will be in Spurs uniform next year.

I guess Quadzilla thinks we can still sign Amare Stoudemire to a contract this summer :rolleyes

If the Spurs are going to go center by committee, it wouldn't hurt having a larger center for those run ins with Shaq and Yao.

Butler I like. He's fine. Shown some flashes. Foul-prone, rebounding seems pretty good. At this point a glorified CBA center who hasn't shown he can start in this league. Is quite young.

Classic upside guy. Shows potential with rebounding, blocking, scoring inside.

He had an unreal +/- for the Knicks, for whatever that's worth:

Net Points per 100 Possessions
+6.8 offense
-10.1 defense
+16.8 net

He's a true center. So unless Pop went away from small ball, he wouldn't have played.

That said, he has a chance to be much better than Rasho or Nazr ever will be.
