I only liked the original Dune.
They became exponentially unreadable after that. By the fourth book, I was like WTF????

Captain Picard is in it.
I thot he made a pretty crappy Gurney, to be honest. Not at all what I expected after reading the book.
The extended version of the movie rocked.
The books got increasingly incoherent. I don't know what kind of drugs Herbert was on, but the effects must have been cumulative.
There have been some follow-ons written after Frank Herbert's passing. The "Dune: House Trilogy" by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson is kind of interesting. The follow-on "Legends of Dune" trilogy is not and had a really crappy ending, to boot. Now the duo has come up with a new two-book series, "Hunters/Sandworms of Dune" that is supposedly written from an outline Frank Herbert had written which tells what happened after "Chapterhouse: Dune." The book description on Amazon says "To strengthen their forces, the fugitives have used genetic technology from Scytale, the last Tleilaxu Master, to revive key figures from Dune’s past—including Paul Muad’Dib and his beloved Chani, Lady Jessica, Stilgar, Thufir Hawat, and even Dr. Wellington Yueh. Each of these characters will use their special talents to meet the challenges thrown at them." Yeah, OK, right. Sounds like something ol' Frank would have dreamed up.
As a result of the movie, I can't see the name "Yueh" without thinking "look, it's the guy from Quantum Leap."

The books start off good and easy to follow at first then get more and more confusing.

I have only read the first four, but its fuckin awesome. He's a master of the unexpected. The books just get increasingly weirder and weirder, and I can't wait to finish the final 2. I am open to reading the newer books, but haven't read one yet so i may say they suck in the future.
I thought the original Dune movie was really good, I liked the darkness of it, but it was far too condensed. They needed to make it 4-5 hours long, and it would have been a masterpiece. The second version was just the right length, great acting, but it was missing something. It looked too polished, and lacked the dark futuristic bleakness of the first version.
I was a little dissapointed in the Children of Dune miniseries, basically it was too boring. All they did was show people talking. I wanted more action. But Ayla was really hot so that's a plus.
As far as the books go, I'd have to say Children of Dune was my favorite. Talk about one of the all time mindfucking twists of all time. rofl. Dune was fucking tight, you could tell he took his time on it, the others seem a little rushed.
Dune Messiah is my least favorite so far, cuz it was too heavy on the dialogue, not much really happened. But it is still a necessary read.
God Emporer of Dune is actually pretty fucking tight. He basically fastforwards thousands and thousands of years and Leto is still the emporer. Fucking awesome.
He regulates his peons with an iron fist and utilizes an all-lesbian army to do his bidding. Then he breeds his people to make someone come into being who will destroy him, just cuz he is so bored, and wants to corrupt the products of his breeding program. What more could you want?

Have you read all of them Obiwan? What do you think of the new ones. I'm actually looking forward to reading some of them like the Butlerian Jihad and House Harkonnen. I wish they had a book just about the Bene Gesserit. Them girls is awesome! FEAR IS THE MINDKILLER.

Yes, I have read every Dune book ever written exceot for the 2 very new hard covers that Cubanmustgo mentioned, "Hunters/Sandworms of Dune" and "Chapterhouse: Dune."
My fav original Dune books are:
Dune and God Emporer of Dune
As for the new books - while obviously there is that littel somethign they lack since they were not written by Frank himself - I have to say they are better.
Way better particularly in quality of storytelling.
As you mentioned some of the original books after Dune kinda dragged on a bit.. too much dialouge that doesn;t really advance the story.
But the books by Brain Herbert and Kevin J Anderson are incredible.
CBF - 1st read the Prelude to Dune trilogy.
house Atreides
house harkonnen
house Corrino
in that order.
Gives ALOT of insite into the Dune pre-story. you learn all about Jessica's beginings... who her mother was , exactly how they got that fag harkonnen to impregnante a Bene geserit, Duke Leto's childhood.
You get an incredible background on Bene Geserit trainign in depth.
theres a good plotline in there also of a rare GOOD harkonnen... not that he lasts long in that family.
Anyway. they are all must reads. AMAZING.
after that read the Legends of Dune trilogy.
wow
Dune The Butlerian Jihad
Dune The Machine Crusade
Dune The Battle of Corrin
this goes back allll the way to the war withe the machines. Why it started, how it got eggrd on to completion, who took the reigns. So you get a coplete history of how nad why the original Dune universe was created and developed into.
These books describe the very beginings of the bene geserit, the spacing guild, the discovery of spice, the Atriedes and harkonnen fued (they were brothers dude).
Incredible stuff. Actually if someone had never read Dune they sould enjoy these books all on thier own.
And of course you kinda know the ending allready since it;s a history of a story you are already familiar with.
But the HOW and WHY of everythign happening is very interesting.

I do like the original movie. I liked the Paul/Muad'ib in the original the best. But I was not happy with Patrick Stewart as Gurney (as much as that pains me to say...)
I like the Sci-fi miniseries alot better... except for the glaring mis-casting of Paul/Muad'ib. ick. But Chani, Jessica, Gurney, and Baron Harkonnen are all fantastic in this version.
the Children of Dune mini-series sucked ass.

Got my series titles wrong. I enjoyed the "House" series very much - they were worthy prequels.

These didn't do much for me. I found the last book very unsatisfying - it seemed suddenly way too easy to overthrow the machine empire at Corrin. Oh well.

I don't think it became too easy -I think they had finally found an edge, and were willing to make a gmable. It paid off.
But also the machine's kinda did it to themselves with the over calculationg of what is most probably going to happen.
Thats a common theme in alot of sci-fi: the computers guessing the % that this or this would happen and the crazy unpredictable humans doing the opposite.
Looking at it from a purely military view - of course the folks with the faster ships will win eventually. They just had to win by the end of book 3. Otherwise it would be more of a Douglas Adams "trilogy"* :lol
* there are 5 books in Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker Triology.
