Coming to San Antonio for vacation

Can you guys suggest any good food places to eat? I have children so nothing too fancy please.

I also need advice for things to do. We are going to Seaworld and Fiesta Texas, but nothing else has been decided. We will stay for 8 days.

My understanding is that San Antonio is hot, flat, and dusty. I recommend that you go to Dallas instead as they seem to have a more talented basketball team.

San Antonio isn't the quaint town I remember. Spend your hard earned cash elsewhere.

Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels is always a good family destination. It's always at or towards the top of every travel organizations' list of water parks, only about a 30 minute drive from SA. I hear it's been a pretty dry summer so I don't know if tubing is a good idea. There's also Gruene, which is pretty much just a tourist trap these days, but it might be worth a look.

We have been getting some rain lately so the tubing should be better. San Antonio is a great place to visit don't listen to them they're just jealous. Haters !!! How old are your kids? that will kind of determine the best places for you to eat. Are you looking for chain type places or one of a kind places? Also what part of town are you staying?

Thanks for responding. I had to leave yesterday. My kids are 10 and 17. We are pretty familiar with major chain places so something a little original would be good. We are staying at a hotel near downtown. Someone mentioned Gruene. What is that? We haven't been to Schlitterbahn. The water parks in Seaworld and Fiesta Texas are pretty nice, so is it worth going to another water park? My kids are boys so they hate shopping. They love video games, bowling, car racing, and stuff like that.

For restaurants I'd suggest Magic Time Machine and The Rain Forrest Cafe.

Gruene is super touristy. A lot of shops and quaint places to eat. Unless you planned on going tubing, I don't think Gruene would be something fun for the entire family (especially the 10 & 17 y/o).

Take 'em to Dave & Buster's then. :lol

If you want excellent chicken fried steak go to Tip Top on Fredricksburg Rd. near West Ave
For BBQ, Bob's Smokehouse on the corner of Rigsby and Roland is best
For Burgers, Chris Madrid's on Blanco (I think) a few miles north of downtown can't be beat

All of these places are pretty reasonable, especially for someone who isn't used to San Antonio prices (much cheaper than I'm used to in LA for great meals). If you had daughters they prob wouldn't like the places I mentioned, but for 10 and 17 year-old boys these places would be great.

He said he had 10 and 17 year-old boys, not 10 and 17 year-old funboys. At age 10 I would have found that place lame as fuck, and at 17 I'd never forgive pops for choosing it. :lol

JT's dinner suggestions (in no particular order):

Jailhouse Cafe (OMG, the cinnamon rolls are to die for)
Cheesecake Factory (can be pricy but the food is great, and the cheesecake is even better)
Willie's (they have a playground and a gameroom, plus good food)
Chacho's (you can take your kids here but it's more an adult restaraunt, live music and drinks, etc, but the food is great)
Texas Roadhouse
Magic Time Machine (your kids will have fun here)
Pico De Gallo
Paisano's
EZ's
Dave and Buster's (this is probably the best bet for your kids, but Magic Time Machine is great too)

I haven't been to the Rainforest Cafe before but I've heard good things about it.

Fiesta Texas is great, your kids will love it. I haven't been since before they made the Superman ride and I'm looking forward to our company trip in August. The Alamo is pretty boring but I only think that because I had to go like every year in school for history class growing up. But there is some interesting things there if your kids are interested in Texas history. I don't know if Malibu Castle is still open, but if they are it's worth checking out, they have arcade games and go karts.

And yeah, Schlitterbahn is about 30 minutes up the road. It's the best waterpark I've ever been to.

I'd suggest looking online to see if there are any musicals or plays going on at the Majestic. I've seen a few productions there, Lion King, Grease, Rent, BLAST!, and they've all been great. Depends on what's playing, but your kids should have a good time.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head right now.

And Portland is cold and rainy, and the basketball team is always in the news it seems for all the wrong reasons.

I guess you have never been to San Antonio....just like have never been to Portland. :rolleyes
