Question for the ladies: Have you had a tubal?

Okay, so I'm having our second baby in about 9 days, and at my last appt my doctor asked if I wanted a tubal. It sort of hadn't crossed my mind, but now I'm obsessed with trying to make a decision because I've got, ya know, 9 days to decide if I want one.

My husband and I have pretty much decided we want to do it; we don't want more children and I don't like the idea of having to take the pill or get an IUD for the next 10 to 15 years (I'm 33).

So, here's my question (since I've decided I want a tubal and I'm basically looking for reassurance that it's not going to completely fuck up my already quirky hormonal issues): If you've had one, did you experience any side effects? Did it cause problems, etc? When I googled TL, I came across a couple sites that mentioned an increased risk of heavier periods, hysterectomy, etc... but how much of an increase are we talking? So, I guess I'm just sort of looking for a general show of hands from those of you who've done it and let me know if you had any complications.

I have not, as I am just entering childbearing time, but my mother did and I have a couple of friends who did as well. Both friends have MUCH heavier periods than previously. My mom said she did not. My mom did require a hysterectomy, but so did my aunt, who did not have a TL, so it's not clear that it was related to the TL.

I do know that my mom told me (in the same conversation where I learned she'd had a TL) that she wished she hadn't done it. She did it right after my brother was born, and my dad had said he didn't want any more kids, so she went ahead. Then a couple years later, dad wanted another, but too late (and too early for IVF). She was sad, because she loved kids. But that's a different scenario, so . . .

And you don't really HAVE to decide now - the procedure can be done later as well, it's just usually more convenient to do it up front.

I'm not entirely ready to throw in the towel (although getting perilously close at 34), I went with an IUD ... while the first couple of months are hardly great, it's just as effective as a TL but you can have it taken out at any time. And you only have to change it out about every 5 years or so. Bonus: about 80% of woman stop having a period altogether within the first 6 months to a year.

That's definitely the less-invasive (& painful) option with the very least amount of potential side effects/health problems associated with it.

I'm w/ SW in the "not ready to throw in the towel" boat. they offered me the tubal - but I got the IUD.
I think I'm done (we have 2 girls 18 months apart) - but i'm only 25 and Emo talks about more kids sometimes. So even tho I feel 100% finished I just couldn;t do it. And I couldn;t make that decision right when I was preggo or birthing since I'd be all doped up on my own crazy hormones.

BUT- My mom got one after my brother was born, she was 38, and yes her periods are incredibly heavier. She says they last about 9 days sometimes more and they are very heavy every day. No light days. And very crampy - so she;s back on the pill anyway.

Speaking from the male perspective, me and the wife did some research on whether she should get her tubes tied after our twins were born. To summarize we found way too much info that pointed to some risks associated with tubal ligation, more in the long term than in the short term (she's 34 now). In the end it was much easier for me to just go in and get the snip-snip, and it is a reversible procedure. Took about 15 minutes right there in the doc's office and done. Some minor swelling and pain after, but nothing a few tylenol can't take care of. I'm glad I got it done, hope some of this info helps with the decision.

It took me several years to get pregnant with my daughter due to endometriosis. I had a tubal when my daughter was born. My ex insisted on it. (long story) Then shortly thereafter he he begged me to have if reversed. As far as my periods. It didn't affect them. As for pain I had a lot but that was probably from endometriosis. I had the reversal a year later ($20K & 3 surgeries) it was successful but the very end of my tubes (the fimbria)were destroyed by the endometriosis so I was never able to get pregnant again. Eventually I had to get a Hysterectomy. I wish I hadn't given in to his pressure to get the tubal initially because then I might have been able to have another child before the endo destroyed my tubes.
