...the following about a player:

1: He is a legitimate 7-footer
2: He averages 16.3 rebounds per 48 minutes (9th in the league)
3: He averages 3.41 blocks per 48 minutes (16th in the league)
4: He is one of the most athletic "bigs" in the league
5: He could be had for close to the league minimum salary
6: He is a free agent

This player is out there and is getting virtually no run. I think with the right team and motivation, he could flourish...

I love when people base stats on per 48 minutes to evaluate players.

If it is Loren, I think he had some jealousy issues with Tim that caused him to transfer from Wake to AZ. Not thinking that is a powder keg that we need to light...

The sad part is, the Spurs will probably settle for some no-name scrub who averaged about the same kind of rebound numbers Nesterovich was good for these past few years. But most of the homers here will see him as the second coming. :rolleyes

Lauren Woods is a pussy. I've never seen a softer basketball player for being a big man in the NBA. He makes Rasho look like Antoine Carr. No thanks.

Plus all the aforementioned animosity with Duncan. This conversation is a non-starter.

It's LOREN Woods. You can at least spell it right.

In case some of you forgot, rebounds were the major problem for most of last season. Now you're going to pass on someone who could possibly double the rebound numbers of Rasho? If that's the case, you deserve to be heartbroken after next year.

If you told me about that guy, I'd ask you why he only played about 300 minutes last season for a crappy Raptors team that needed help in the middle.

Of course, that's the practical side of me.

In case you've never seen the guy play, he sucks. I could really give a flying flip what kind of garbage stats he put up to come up with something other than abysmal rebounding per 48 minutes, whatever that's worth.

If he were to come here and play 12 minutes a night he'd be grabbing exactly 4 rebounds per game. What a hoss...

I've been watching him since his college days. He doesn't suck near as bad as Rasho does. Give me a better rebounding alternative (center) that's still available and I'm all ears.

Dude, I saw him play in college too. He was Charmin' soft then, and he's only gotten softer since.

Better alternatives?

Reggie Evans
Scott Pollard
Elson
Jackie Butler
Lorenzen Wright

And that's just off the top of my head.

Was it understood anymosity between Duncan and Loren Woods or was it something verbal/physical?

Loren Woods moved from Wake to AZ because Duncan went to Wake, breakign any chances that he could have played in Wake and played good.

I understand that.

What I meant is, did Loren Woods say anything about it, or was it more understood that there was some hostility. A lot of players transfer for better opportunities to display there skills...that doesn't necessarily mean they don't play on the same team down the line in the NBA.

Why would Loren Woods have any issues staying at Wake Forest because Duncan was there?

It's not like they would have been competing for playing time. Duncan was long gone from WF by 1997, and Woods, IIRC, didn't leave Arizona until 2001.

How would their paths have crossed? I'm obviously missing something here if there is a story behind it.

They were at Wake at the same time (96-97 season) and the following year Loren Woods had a huge breakdown because he couldn't handle being in Duncan's shadow or whatever and had to transfer to AZ.

He started the 97-98 (his sophomore season) at Wake then had some sort of mental breakdown and took a leave of absence from the team. Then came back and ended up transferring (yes Duncan was gone by then).

He sat out 98-99 and then played two seasons at Arizona.

I remember watching Loren Woods in college, thinking he would be a hell of an NBA player.

The guy had a gift for blocking shots...so much for that.

during one of loren woods' first practices at wake, he repeatedly tried to out muscle duncan and "pushed him around" played too physical with him for just a practice. td took offense, the two started jawing and teammates defended duncan.

Yeah there wasn't too much love between them.

Then when Duncan graduated, Woods broke down (there were rumors he tried to commit suicide that's why he took leave of absence) because he couldn't handle being constantly compared to Tim.

Interesting comments.

His favorite players used to be David Robinson and Sheed. Also, when asked about what he learned playing next to Tim Duncan his freshman year he said something like "he's a good player, but I learned everything I know at Arizona and high school". Ouch.
