Bob Dylan: New Album, Broadway Musical

While the past few years have seen a massive retro raid of Bob Dylan's archives (the debut volume of his Chronicles bio, two entries in the perpetually vault-clearing Bootleg Series, the Scorsese-directed No Direction Home documentary), rock's greatest living poet is finally set to deliver what fans have been clamoring nearly half a decade for: the follow-up to 2001's astonishing Love and Theft.

Dylan's 44th (!) LP, the healthily-gestating Modern Times is set to hit stores on August 29 via Columbia, and ends Dylan's longest studio album layoff (take THAT motorcycle accident!) in his four decade career. Its tracklist was revealed this week on RollingStone.com:

01 Thunder on the Mountain
02 Spirit on the Water
03 Rollin' and Tumblin'
04 When the Deal Goes Down
05 Someday Baby
06 Workingman's Blues
07 Beyond the Horizon
08 Nettie Moore
09 The Levee's Gonna Break
10 Ain't Talkin

As usual, Dylan will perform vocal, guitar, and harmonica duties across the ten tracks, while also handling keyboard, as rock n' roll's resident Bard has done throughout his most recent touring jaunts.

And while word on the album's tone has been relatively silent, with Dylan's early summer tour alongside Merle Haggard failing to preview any of the new cuts, Columbia Records Chairman Steve Barnett stated in a press release that the disc will act as the third entry in a thematic trilogy begun with 1997's Time Out of Mind and the aforementioned Love and Theft.

If that means more twlight years musings, tales of lost love, and so-corny-they're-clever knock knock jokes, we're so there!

Here's the Modern Times cover art, which kinda reminds us of Luna's Penthouse:

Not one to break routine, Dylan is also planning to head out on the road in support of Modern Times this summer. The subtly titled "Bob Dylan Show" will play exclusively at minor league baseball parks throughout August and early September. Special guests expected on the trek include Junior Brown, Elana James & The Continental Two, and Stevie Ray's younger, more alive, brother Jimmie Vaughan (with Lou Ann Barton).

And finally, The Times They Are A-Changin', the long in the works Broadway musical featuring key tracks from Dylan's early catalog, is inching closer to the stage, thanks in large part to the talents of choreographer Twyla Tharp, whose previous success Movin' Out adapted the catalog of Billy Joel to the delight of coma patients everywhere.

While it's unclear how much input Dylan actually had on the proceedings, it seems the musical will be set in, of course, a circus! Classics like the title track, "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "Mr. Tambourine Man," and "Blowin' in the Wind" weave through a story described as "a young man's relationships with his demanding father and a beautiful circus performer."

The Beatles get Cirque du Soleil, and Bob Dylan gets Barnum & Bailey?! Well, I guess it worked for the Stones. As long as there's an elephant named Maggie, fucking roll with it, Bob.
