Nuggets lose Buckner to Mavs
The Nuggets have an all-points bulletin out for 3-point shooters. Their search got a little harder early this morning when their free agent guard, Greg Buckner, agreed to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Buckner will receive at least three years guaranteed, with the two sides working on details for two more years. .

"I'm happy," Buckner said today. "It was my first choice to go to Dallas. It's crazy it worked out."

Aside from serving as a defensive specialist, the two-guard represented Denver's top perimeter threat on a team that finished last in the NBA in 3-point shooting last season. Buckner's .354 3-point percentage may not have been phenomenal, but his 86 threes easily led the team.

Buckner spent two years in Denver after arriving from Philadelphia before the 2004-05 season. He averaged 6.7 points per game last year.

But with the Nuggets having committed approximately $140 million to Carmelo Anthony and Nene this summer, Buckner said he and his agent agreed that his return would be a longshot.

"My time in Denver was great. It got me out of a bad situation with Philly," he said. "They wanted to take

care of their young kids. I thought it was going to work out that way. You have to take care of Melo and Nene. There wasn't much money left."

Buckner also looked at a Dallas team that reached the NBA finals in June and said he sees a good chance at winning a championship. He said coach Avery Johnson described a team culture where the players work hard but have fun.

"He said I bring a need, someone who can shoot from the outside, be a threat," Buckner said. "Basically, the same thing I was in Denver a defensive stopper."

How much? I guess this isn't the MLE...?If it's three years guaranteed, it has to be money from the MLE. LLE and minimum deals can only be two years in length.

Looks like Dallas knows they can't pull a top (or middle tier) free agent with the full MLE.

you didnt watch the clips-nuggs series did you? he clanked shot after shot, Melo would have had 10apg if buck hit his shots

and there was a rumour that he was one of the guys who was complaining in the locker room after a cips game about the team 'being melo's'

He doesnt care where he playes, he just wants the money.

Why would i be bitter about losing someone that i hoped would be gone last offseason?

good riddance , its time for DJ to show he is and was always the better 2 guard :fro

We don't need a *top* free agent, we have a solid team that needs a bit of tweaking. We've had the Cuban upheavals in the past and they sucked big time so it's nice to see that the team is pretty much still intact. This is one of the few things I've admired about the Spurs in the past, they know how to keep the major players together.

Well he isn't here for his offensive skills. Denver's problem is neither Carmelo nor Andre Miller can hit an outside shot so the Nuggets relied to heavily on Buckner's offense which is not the case with Dallas. Buckner would fit in like Adrian Griffin for Dallas. Wade stopper here we come.

Melo can't hit an outside shot? :lol :drunk

His J is sweet and always improving. The only issue was in the Clippers series and thats coz the threw 2-3 guys at him straight away coz they knew Buck couldnt hit the side of a barn.

And the Mavs paid him the full MLE? :lol Buck is only worth half the MLE. IS it like a $25mil+ over 5 years contract?

The Nuggets need shooters, the Mavs need defenders

But dont think he will stop Wade. He averagd 34.4ppg vs the Nuggets and Kobe averaged 37ppg vs the nuggets. He is good but not that good.

mavsfan1000

He was benched because Terry can't guard Parker. Harris was a better fit against Parker in that series. I think Dallas did better with Griffin against both Phoenix and Miami but because of matchups did better with Harris against San Antonio.

Clearly, you guys did just fine with Harris in there. :oops

Mavs just used part of the MLE on Buckner. I believe they're paying around $10million over 4 years with the 4th year only partially guaranteed.

There is no Wade stopper, Kobe stopper, T-Mac stopper etc. What Buckner can do that Griffen couldn't it keep the defense (somewhat) honest.

With Ager performance so far I don't think that they need James. What they do need is a back-up PG. He doesn't have to be a big name guy (Lue/Pargo/B. Jackson type) to back-up Harris in the speed line-up.

With Terry here for the long haul he will have to move to a more permanent SG position and make room for Harris.

Harris - ????
Terry - Ager/Buckner
Howard - Stackhouse
Nowitzki - Croshere
Diop - Dampier

If not for that one hole, the speed line-up is ready for full-time play

mffl89
07-16-2006, 07:59 AM
i think that avery will have harris come off the bench at the beginning of the season and will probably move him into the starting line up as the season progresses...so we still have more time to find a decent back up pg once harris takes full control of the point
