SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Center Jarron Collins agreed to terms on a new contract with the Utah Jazz.

Collins was an unrestricted free agent when the two-year deal he signed in 2004 expired July 1. He spent his first five seasons with the Jazz, who picked him in the second round of the 2001 draft.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed Thursday.

Collins started 41 of the 79 games he played last season and averaged 5.3 points and 4.2 rebounds.

I'm kinda glad that this option is now out of the question.

I'd rather have Jarron Collins at this point than Francisco Elson.

Thats nice but I figured it belonged in the Spurs forum since they were reportedly after him.

After Butler is matched and Elson sinks to the bottom of the rotation, we're gonna be begging for a trade for Jarron Collins.

My gut tells me the Spurs were not particularly interested in him. They seem to have targeted a C who has a reputation for toughness - both Butler and Elson fit this. Rasho and Nazr both lacked it. I think they're looking for a Kevin Willis type who can go in there and bang some guys around if that's the style they're playing. When they're not, they'll bring in Matt Bonner to spread the floor. Seems likea decent plan.

Toughness is a good attribute. But did they really think they couldn't get Elson for the LLE or equivalent? How vastly did they overpay for him?

You haven't even seen Elson play with the Spurs yet. No one has. We've seen clips, but at times players play different on a different team. Give it a rest already.

I'm obviously exaggerating. Elson will be a rotation guy, but he'll be mediocre at best. Explains the contract they gave him - two years for mediocrity.

I don't get why he's suddenly a different player playing for the Spurs than he was in Denver. If anything, the rotations will confuse him and he can't coexist near Duncan and his numbers suffer, just like Mohammed and Nesterovic.

Elson wasn't someone who was an offensive powerhouse in Denver. He isn't expected to do that here. However, I believe he will get better looks since he'll be playing alongside Duncan. How many times did we see Nazr open in the paint because defenses focused in on Duncan? The thing is Nazr dropped all those passes. I don't see Elson with the same type of hands.

I am not saying he will be DRob, but I see him being an improvement over Rasho and Nazr. Not a huge improvement, but an improvement none the less.

Elson's scouting reports indicate bad hands.

I remember him playing a tough rebounding center vs the Spurs and someone that gave Duncan at times fits, when guarding him.

I really don't think Elson is as bad as all the doomsdayer people will lead you to believe.

I agree TPark. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Players improve all the time.

I'd take an improving 26 year old over an improving 31 year old.

Elson has had good games against the Spurs. Curiously, so did Butler. That seems to be a highly placed mark for why the Spurs go for certain players.

It certainly was a key factor when three summers ago when the Spurs targeted Rasho as their replacement center.

Judging by that, the Spurs must be really down on 26 year olds this year.
