The Spurs summer league team starts playing tomorrow (Friday) at Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, LJ and I couldn't go this year but I have a friend who is a reporter in Seattle who is going for a few days of it and will get us pics, etc.
The only person that I have real interest in on the Spurs team in Mahinmi and perhaps Roman Levter.
Here's the Spurs initial roster (http://www.woai.com/spurs/story.aspx?content_id=81B73EEA-75C1-4F31-9EC8-22BAD0EC63B2), but we'll see if it's changed tomorrow.
Other teams playing are: Utah, Dallas, Seattle, Philly, and Atlanta.
My friend Noel Felix is on the Seattle team, along with their draft pick Saer Sene who has the biggest wingspan in the league.
Here's the rest of the RMR rosters.

Fairly unexciting bunch.
A couple of Toros are in there.
Our PFs are going to get some inflated rebound numbers because of our centers' off the scale stiffness factor.
I'd like to see if Levter is anything close to being a long 3 project.
Donta Smith and Mel Sanders are going to put up 20 shots a game.

Donta Smith and Mel Sanders are going to put up 20 shots a game.
Because no one else can shoot, or just because they're prone to jacking up shots?

The former, and that seems to be the Spurs summer league MO -- designate a scorer and force feed.

CJ Watson and Taquan Dean can shoot.

The Seattle team cut Omar Williams and Kenton Paulino today before leaving for Utah. I wonder if the Spurs team cut any of their guys.

I'm most excited about Mahinmi and Donta Smith. Smith might be the young athlete the Spurs need. His numbers in the NBDL were quite impressive.
I wish Melvin Sanders wasn't on the team. He's not an NBA player but he'll hog a lot of the spotlight from other players the Spurs need to get a look at. Sanders is a good guy, a good teammate and everything, but there's no way he should be on the team next year.
I'm not expecting too much from Mahinmi. I don't think he's ready to put up monster numbers, but hopefully he gives us some hope. :)
If Donta Smith plays well and Mahinmi shows promise, that's about as much as we can hope for.

Just think, this time last year...Donta Smith was passing the ball to Boris Diaw (a former Pau player) in a Summer League game. (the S&T of Joe Johnson for Diaw and 2 1st Rounders was completed in August of 2005).

SALT LAKE CITY (July 14, 2006) – In game two of the first day of the Rocky Mountain Revue, Pavel Podkolzin took over the floor presence at 7-5. The large crowd was awed by the size of the big man from Russia. Podkolzin started hot with an early dunk and a couple of very strong rebounding efforts.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Darius Washington were also fan favorites coming into the Revue as very recognizable college names out of George Washington and Memphis respectably.
For San Antonio, Andre Brown, had 10 points in the first half, while Louisville grad Taquan Dean added five in the first half in front of a nearly sold out crowd at the Lifetime Activities Center at Salt Lake Community College.
The scoring in the first half was very spread out for the Mavericks, who led at the half, 33-29. Of the nine players that got playing time in the first half, seven of them scored. Rawle Marshall led the way with eight points going only 3-for-10 from the field.
As the second half started, the Spurs made a run to tie the game early thanks to a big quarter from Melvin Saunders who had 6 points.
The offense picked up for both teams in the third quarter, and surprisingly the Spurs led the points in the paint 34-24 despite the overwhelming size advantage for the Mavs. Podkolzin was held scoreless in the quarter, largely due to the outstanding physical play by the Spurs’ big men, Ian Mahinmi and Rich Melzer.
As the game went on, both teams turned to their transition games. Through a lot of up and down action in the third and fourth quarters, it grew apparent that both teams were rusty going into the summer league.
Late in the fourth, the Spurs pulled away as the Mavericks grew tired and missed open shots. Despite the sloppiness late, Dallas still has a chance with 40 seconds left as two free throws by Marshall pulled the game to within three points after being down as many as 8 a few minutes earlier. However, a strong sequence for Melzer which included a 12-foot jumper and a huge blocked shot on the other end of the court ended all hope for Dallas.
Saunders led all scorers with 23 points for San Antonio on 11 of 16 from the floor. Andre Brown added 16 points to help lead the Spurs to the 79-71 victory. Rawle Marshall had 20 points in a losing effort for the Mavericks.
Former West Virginia standout, Kevin Pittsnogle, did not dress in the game for the Spurs. No reason was given by Spurs officials for Pittsnogle’s absence from the lineup.
[Maybe because he's on the Mavericks' roster.]

SALT LAKE CITY (July 14, 2006) - In game one of the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue, things started very slowly as players and coaches got to know each other throughout the first quarter for both the Seattle Sonics and the Philadelphia 76ers.
Seattle’s first round pick, Mouhamed Sene, made his presence known early in the game at Salt Lake Community College on Friday scoring the first five points for Seattle and blocking two shots within the first minute of the game. Sene played only six minutes in the first quarter and scored seven points.
The Sonics ended the quarter with a 12 point lead behind Noel Felix’s 11 points and a suffocating defense. Seattle continued its strong defensive performance in the second quarter as the 76ers took four minutes to score its first points of the quarter.
The first half ended after 24 minutes of very physical basketball with 30 total free throws attempted. Both teams combined for 26 turnovers (13 each) in the half.
The 76ers made some good half-time adjustments to the intense Seattle defense and scored the first 11 points of the second half and took their first lead of the game three minutes into the third quarter at 51-49.
At the end of the third quarter, the game was tied at 60 after the Sonics only managed to score 11 points.
The 76ers began to pull away in the fourth quarter as they took Sene and Felix out of the game. Sene was held scoreless in the last three quarters of the game. Felix began to get hot late in the fourth but Seattle couldn’t make a stop as the fourth quarter went on.
Philadelphia’s Shavlik Randolph proved to be too much for the Seattle defense that had been so stout in the first half. Randolph ended the game with 25 points in the game, 15 of which came in the second half. The 76ers strong finish led them to the 88-74 win.
Felix finished the game with 19 points and Keith Langford added 15 points for the Sonics. Philadelphia had four players in double-digits and spread the scoring between nine different players.

WOAI TV was the only local news station to show video of this game. It showed CJ Watson do a nice crossover dribble to draw a double and then dish inside to Jamar Smith for the flush. It showed Ian switching off on Rawle Marshall while Melzer recovered and getting a hand on Marshall's shot, with Melzer also getting a piece of it from behind. It also showed Melzer taking a shot from the wing (with Ian and Brown battling bigs underneath), and then getting the long rebound and driving past Pavel for the two-hand dunk.

You are not going to select a great late first/second round pick every year. Unless Ms Cleo is working with the spurs, Tony and Manu type impact won't be an annual thing.
I think Ian will be a good player. He just needs more chances to showcase his talent. Potential can only get you so far. If he doesn't impress after the summer league, I doubt he will be taking more of the Spurs' time.

My Back-up PG depth chart
1. Vaughn
2. CJ Watson
Beno should be dealt away. He hasn't recovered since Finals 05. Vanx of all people was taking his minutes in the playoffs. Your value sucks big time when simply dribbling for a PG becomes a factor. Management has lost confidence in him and I think he will be dealt to one of the "several teams interested." For a second rounder/cash/decent role players/package deal.....
Mr. Body
07-14-2006, 11:57 PM
I'd take Vaughn as backup and suck it up for a year. As one of the few guys on the roster with any value, Beno needs to be used to package in a trade.
Solid D
07-15-2006, 12:47 AM
Vaughn is a pretty nice addition. He's probably the best defensive PG the Spurs have had to back up TP since AD if you think about it.
Vaughn was used in two ways by NJ. He spotted Kidd, but he was also used a lot when they went small alongside Kidd. Vaughn defended well, thus he was used to pressure either guard. His role wasn't to score but to be an extra ball-handler and to D-up. For instance, Vaughn was good enough to defend Fred Jones, a very strong player.
The problem he will face with the Spurs is when the ball swings back to him late in the shot clock and he has to shoot. That's a case where Beno provides better results.
Mr. Body
07-15-2006, 12:56 AM
Beno is the better overall option, but if they can package him with Barry or whomever to get a good young SF, you have to do it. He's expendable. Getting rid of him for a draft pick wouldn't be the way to go.
Solid D
07-15-2006, 01:03 AM
If Beno isn't traded, he is TP's primary backup...agreed. He is a great passer, particularly up the court in transition and in feeding the post. Offensively he is very gifted.
If the Spurs want to get a stop or pressure full court, or are having trouble under pressure themselves, Vaughn will be a nice option.
Mr. Body

I'm looking forward to what the team can cook up here to get a young SF. Or maybe their solution is Rich Melzer and we go with what we've got?

Does anyone remember the leading rebounder and one of the leading scorers in the RMR last year? He made the All-RMR team? The long SF, 6'10" 215 lb. Britton Johnsen? Lots of people were singing his praises.
He ended up playing for 2 different teams in Europe (Spain and Greece) last year. Sometimes there are lots of factors we don't see.

KG is skinny as a rail and still great but in general players need to be around a certain weight for their height and position. He could be thin and still be effective though-the best center I ever saw, Hakeem Olajuwon, (gotta admit it much as I hate it) was never a big muscled up bruiser.

The Sonics had him add it to his game. He taped off the NBA 3-point line at the Fresno St gym for the last two summers and worked on it.
He hit 3-for-4 from 3 yesterday and a 20footer. Today he missed both 3's but hit a 20 foot.
So yes, he has some perimeter game. They are making him into a defensive minded guy who can bang down low, step out and hit a jumper, and play both forward spots.
Sounds familiar to a Spurs need. :(
