Report: Knicks intend to match Spurs' offer for Butler

According to the NY Daily News today, Thomas is having "second thoughts" on keeping Butler, and lists the chances as 50:50. The NY Post also says that the Knicks are not set on bringing him back at the current price tag---Isaiah is quoted in that article as saying "Jackie was a good player for us, but we have other good players here also," which certianly doesn't sound like he's indispensable.

In a shock to the Knicks, center Jackie Butler signed a staggering three-year, $7 million offer sheet with the Spurs on the first day of the free-agent signing period, according to sources.

The Knicks have seven days to match the offer, but it's unlikely they will go that high. Isiah Thomas said through a spokesman that no decision has been made.

The Knicks made Butler a $920,000 qualifying offer to keep him restricted. Butler is their third-string center, but is viewed as valuable in case Jerome James were to report out of shape. Butler, 21, showed potential in parts of two seasons with the Knicks as a low-post scorer.

The Spurs are desperate for a big man after losing their two centers, Nazr Mohammed and Rasho Nesterovic. Thomas said Monday he expected it to be "a long summer" regarding Butler's situation.

"My summer just got a lot shorter," said agent Keith Glass, who is close friends with Larry Brown. "We're grateful the Knicks pulled (Butler) out of the CBA. They were obviously correct to do that. I think San Antonio is a great place for him. If the Knicks choose to match, it shows they wanted him as well."

This is what is going on....

Isiah likes Butler, but 14 million might be too much to swallow for Dolan when he already has to pay Curry, James, and then in a sense their 3rd string Center (Butler) 14 million dollars.....does not look very good.

The Knicks only have one spot left and Isiah also likes Woods a lot and would hate to see him go.

Just as of yesterday, Isiah seems to have gotten a strong liking for Pete Miller, who was playing Center for the Knicks yesterday...he would come cheap, and he's a jump shooting big man....so he could also get that final spot.

Pete Miller is a wild card in this. If Zeke can transfer his duckling-like love from a former project to a current one, then Butler is all ours.

Yeah, I just really think the Knicks were really taken back by the Spurs offer to Butler.

People around here think $7 million dollars (reality $14 million) is nothing to the Knicks....but Dolan has already come down on Isiah and has told him the money flow is going to stop.

Isiah is content with the team and he has said that he is not going to dip into the MLE, eventhough if they decide to match for Butler the MLE would not be touched......but nontheless, the Knicks are not going to be throwing around money anymore.

If they just flat out decide not to match for Butler because of the price I would not be surprised...I actually don't see them doing it.
