Chargers Sign Shaw

The San Diego Chargers signed veteran wide receiver Bobby Shaw and placed rookie defensive end Dave Ball on the injured reserve list, ending his season.

Wide receiver Reche Caldwell injured his knee against Atlanta Sunday and his status in unknown. Caldwell had an MRI and the results were "cloudy," which suggests the injury could be serious. It is expected Caldwell – the team's leading wide receiver in catches (18), yards (310) and touchdowns (three) – will have a second MRI.

Shaw is in his seventh NFL season and has caught 192 passes and scored 14 touchdowns while averaging 14.2 yards per catch. Shaw also has averaged 12.1 yards and scored one touchdown on 35 punt returns.

Shaw was released by the Buffalo Bill on Tuesday. He has also played for Pittsburgh (1998-01) and Jacksonville (2002).

Shaw's NFL career began as a sixth-round draft choice of the Seattle Seahawks in 1998.

Ball fractured a toe in last Sunday's game in Atlanta. The rookie from UCLA was picked in the fifth round by the Chargers and had three tackles on the season.
