Cheney: United States faces threat of terrorists in cities

ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS
Associated Press

CARROLL, Ohio - Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday evoked the threat of terrorists bombing U.S cities with nuclear or other weapons as he began a bus tour through Republican strongholds in Ohio two weeks before the election.

Cheney defended President Bush's response to the Sept. 11 attacks and questioned whether Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry was up to the challenge of combating such a threat.

"The biggest threat we face now as a nation is the possibility of terrorists ending up in the middle of one of our cities with deadlier weapons than have ever before been used against us - biological agents or a nuclear weapon or a chemical weapon of some kind to be able to threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans," Cheney said.

"That's the ultimate threat. For us to have a strategy that's capable of defeating that threat, you've got to get your mind around that concept."

I don't think the terrorists have the capability to do a nuke. Fucking Iran has a state run and funded program and they can't do it, at least not yet. A "dirty bomb", however, is a possibility. You don't need refined nuclear materials for that, or any real know how, just anything radioactive and a big conventional explosion.

It depends on if those Russians suitcase nukes are myth or fact. But the dirty bomb is a definite possiblity, all it takes is radioactive materials, which Iran has...and BTW which Iraq had as well...we did find 500lbs of Uranium there.

You could also seriously screw us up by putting that junk in our water supply.

Oh, I'm quiet convinced that the Bush/Cheney campaign will do what ever it takes to scare the public.

Good thing the Republicans have a plan in place to draft (http://apnews.myway.com/article/20041015/D85O03L80.html) black (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/07/08/politics/main628254.shtml) paraplegic (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041013/ap_on_el_pr/campaign_reeve_2) teenagers to combat any terrorist attacks... attacks which would only occur as a result of Bush reducing the USA's worldwide credibility (http://www.drudgereportarchives.com/data/2004/07/27/20040727_034402_flash1.htm).

Yea, no scaring the public going on here...

This coming from a blind supporter of a candidate who has invoked scare tactics over everything from social security to flu shots to worrying about our rep. at the UN to black voter intimidation to (I could go on and on, but you get the point).

Pot, kettle.

Bush...Cheney...Republican.........conservative... ....whatever. Always a reason to criticize something. If he's grumpy or scowling he's trying to scare everyone, if he's upbeat and optimistic he's up to no good or lying...the list is endless. It works both ways, of course, but you see where I'm coming from.

At least the scary stuff they talk about is true and based on events that are happening as they speak.

Kerry, on the other hand, rolls out the same old tire DNC canards...

Scare the old! Nevermind that President Bush's Social Security privatization plan isn't "secret."

Scare the young! Nevermind that President Bush has unequivocally stated there will not be a draft in his administration and that the only inkling of such was contained in a Demoncratically authored bill that went down in flames.

There are realistic -- and, yes, worrisome -- developments in the world that concern our national security. Then, there are Demoncratic "scare 'em" handbooks that get dusted off every election.
