Much has been made of Keira Knightley's slender frame and relatively flat chest.

Indeed, Keira herself has spoken openly of not having breasts, but 'pecs', and said that she would die for a curvy body like Scarlett Johansson's.

But in an extraordinarily revealing interview, the actress has told of how American audiences view her rather differently.

The 21-year-old star of the Pirates of the Caribbean films has spoken of her bemusement at being surgically enhanced by computer trickery in promotional material publicising her films in the US.

She says studio executives and magazine publishers have decided that instead of presenting her as she really is, she should be seen as a lot bustier in case her flat chest 'turned people off'.

The actress says her breasts were digitally boosted for the advertising campaign for her 2004 movie King Arthur.

She also claims magazine publishers in the US ban stars from appearing on their front covers unless they have at least a C-cup size, or are willing to be digitally enhanced to make it appear as if they have.

Keira, who played Guinevere in King Arthur, said her normal breasts were blown out of all proportion and looked droopy on the advert to promote the film.

'Those things certainly weren't mine,' she told a US magazine yesterday.

'I remember we had an interesting discussion when they said, "We want to make them slightly larger and you'll get approval" and I was like, "OK, fine. 'I honestly don't give a s***."

'But then they showed me the first copy and these things must have been double-Es - and they were down to my knees.

'And I was like, "I don't mind you making them bigger, but don't give me droopy breasts. They look like your grandmother's t***', the actress said.

She then went on to say the incident was certainly not the first time she has had her chest digitally enhanced.

She explained: 'I did one magazine and found out you're not actually allowed to be on a cover in the US without at least a C cup because it turns people off.

'Apparently they have done market research and found that women want to see no less than a C cup on other women. Isn't that crazy? 'So they made my t*** bigger for that as well.'

Miss Knightley's comments will be seen as refreshingly honest in an industry fettered by publicists and agents watching every word. the actress has an agent, but unusually, no publicist.

First I don't think the C cup thing is true, there are many, many gorgeous women in magazines and on the covers that have big B's at best, such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Jessica Alba (They range in size but as far as I know none of them are C's)....

As for Keira, hers are very, very small but she's still stunning....

yeah I don't believe her either. it may not be anorexia but she definitely has some sort of eating disorder. she was NOT that skinny before

"I can safely say that I'm not," she told reporters during the film's press conference.

"I've got a lot of experience with anorexia," she revealed. "It was in my family, hugely. My grandmother and great-grandmother suffered from it. I've got a lot of friends at school who suffered from it, so I don't think it's anything to be taken lightly."

Some girls have incredible metabolism. I'm married to one.

While many women in the entertainment industry put themselves (and are put) under a lot of pressure to meet a false and unrealistic ideal, Keira doesn't strike me as someone who is obsessively self-conscious about her body... My (uneducated) guess would be that someone who had the kind of self-image problem that leads one to starve herself, she would not agree to appear nude in half of the movies she filmed. But I could be wrong.

I remember reading an article/interview with Jessica Alba where she says that obesity runs in her family; her mom is overweight, her dad was overweight, etc. and that she really takes care of what she eats and works out because her biggest fear is that she will also become obese like them. They see themselves on the screen or in magazines all the time. Most girls see themselves in a mirror and think "gosh I'm fat" or "I have huge thighs" or something else. These girls on the other hand are looking at their entire body on a huge screen or a billboard and not only are they hearing what they think about themselves, but they're hearing what everyone else thinks. If they're not overweight, they're anorexic. There's always something wrong with them. I think that would drive me crazy too. I mean there's probably some scene in some movie where each of these girls has a less than perfectly flattering shot on screen, and that probably sparks some self doubt in them. It's just not a good situation.

As for Keira, she's pretty, even with no boobs. And Kate definitely needs to gain some of that weight back. I thought she looked great in Blue Crush. Now she makes me sick, just like Lindsay Lohan.

Both of them are OK looking but Scarlett has proportion, nice curves vs none on Keira. I will concur with CF on that one.

:wtf Ummmm, where did I say that Scarlett Johanssan wasn't beautiful? I was responding to the fact that another poster said she had curves by stating that she's also quite skinny and her boobs appear large than they are due to a push-up bra. How is that finding something wrong with someone?

She's really not all that skinny. She's not fat, but she's not a stick. She's a nice size, and it definitely looks like she has some curves when you see her in pictures and on a screen. I wasn't directly referring to you as being someone to find something wrong with all people, but there are a lot of people on here that do. I mean gosh if some of the guys think one girl or another is hot there's no reason to go and rain on their parade. Scarlett may not have Pam Anderson boobs, but by no means is she flat-chested either.
