Oh, this is about the trade I just heard about on KSAT... it's not final yet.

Elson/Eisley for JR Smith.

:rolleyes

The trade is Eisley and two 2nd rounders for JR Smith.

And it's been talked about in the NBA forum for the last week.

That's not what Greg Simmons said.

Denver can't even trade Elson. He doesn't belong to them.

Ya, they can...

They would match the offer, then package him in a deal. That's what Simmons mentioned is likely to happen.

...and I would love to be wrong.

I'd like nothing more than to see Elson as our starting center next year.

Because he's an awesome shot-blocking center. ;)

After matching, for a year they can only trade him if he consents to be traded. Since he doesn't want them to match, I'm thinking he's not likely to make that concession ahead of time.

RIF - It was on the news, allegedly.

If they want to trade Elson after matching, they'll have to wait months, I think it's four for a newly signed FA. Besides that, the salaries don't even work. Elson ALONE would be too much to offset JR Smith's contract.

The much more likely scenario is the one discussed in the NBA forum: Eisely signs a non-guaranteed contract, is traded with 2 second rounders for SMith, and is then cut.

Interesting.

I'm not sure about the details, but I am sure that is what I heard Greg Simmons say on the 6 o'clock news. I hope you're right, I'd like to see him (and Mihm possibly now) here next year.

I don't think they can sign-and-trade Elson because sign-and-trade contracts have to be 3-years. If they match the Spurs offer, that's only a 2 year deal.

He doesn't have a say in it does he? As a restricted free agent he's pretty much Denver's bitch as far as if they want to match and keep/trade/tickle him right?

The league rule is that sign and trade contracts must be 3 years or longer.

So if they match the Spurs 2 year offer, they can't then trade him.

That part isn't true. He would become BYC as soon as he's signed. So they could only take 1/2 the salary back anyway.

Does that mean the deal can't happen, or does it mean they have to sign him for 3 years first then be able to trade him?

Oberto will be our starting center. And Mihm will be the backup.

They can't sign him for three years. The only thing they can do is MATCH the Spurs offer, which is two years.

MannyIsGod

In order for a sign and trade to occur all the parties have to agree to rescind the offer sheet first.

That's not quite what he said though...

I'll try to word it exactly like he said it. "And it appears the Spurs could be left with nothing this offseason as it appears the Nuggets are matching ...." Wait. Maybe he said "they're matching on the offer to elson and trading eisley to the bulls for...." :lol Oopsie.
