:elephant Whoosh! :elephant

I just found out tonight that the family I babysat for Sunday and today has chosen me take to Vegas with them this September!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be there for eight ( aww 8 :)) days- sightseeing with the two kids 7 ( girl) and 4 (boy). The children really are very fun. I like them a lot.

Granted it is a working vacation but still it is going to be super fun.

Check this out! They are buying my ticket with theirs... all I have to do is meet them to catch our plane.
When we get to the airport there will be a limo :fro waiting to take us to the Las Vegas Hilton.
Since we will be swimming a lot, the parents decided that I need two swim suits- one of which they will pay for.
( Gatita, I need you for a shopping trip! :) )
All my meals will be taken care of and I may get to see some shows while I am there.
Oh, and I get paid too.

I have never been to Vegas and am very, very, very excited about this trip.
(As if you couldn't tell. haha)

After a not so great three weeks or so, this happy surprise was just what I needed.

Thanks God! :D

CF's advice for Vegas with kids:

Walk swiftly past the people standing on the strip passing out the stripper/porn adverts to anyone and everyone who'll take them. Kids WILL take them.

8 days in Vegas is way too long. Most hotels have free wireless internet or broadband connections, all you need is your own laptop or you can use the hotels computers. I'm thinking your staying with high-rollers, so they'll bend over backwards to help you. With that much time you'll get to see as much of Vegas as you want. I can give you gambling tips if you shoot me a IM.

Wow, Angel, that's great! Congratulations! You are going to have sooo much fun. There are so many fun things to do with kids in Vegas. Be sure to take them to the Harley Davidson Cafe, they will love that, all the motorcycles that go around the restaurant on chain tracks pass right over your head...you can get pictures taken on or standing next to one, too.

And, the NASCAR cafe is also a lot of fun...so much to see in there. You'll want to go to M&M World and inside the big Coke bottle, too, very cool.

Eesh - eight days, especially with no casino play, is a long time to be there. Five days was too long for me.

The first time I went, we went on Friday morning (got to Vegas about 11:00 AM) and came back on Sunday afternoon. That's not enough time because your Sunday is shot getting ready to go, checking out of the hotel, and getting to the airport 2 hrs early; and there are always nightmare delays on the return trip, putting us back into Houston at 2 or 3 in the morning (on one of which it was 30 degrees!). After that, we started going on Friday morning and leaving on the first flight out of there on Monday morning; that way, we get back to Houston around 1 and I have time to drive back to SA in the afternoon. That's the perfect amount of time for me to be in Vegas. It's almost 3 whole days and you get a good night's sleep before you start home.

Sounds great Angel! I used to live in Vegas ages ago (I was 21 yrs old), and have been a couple of times since then. Last time I went was a year and a half ago and I stayed at the Stratusphere. I don't gamble either, but you can still have a great time! There is several great golf courses! Lots of great shows as well. You might want to hit an outlet mall on the outskirts of town if you want to get a "deal" shopping though. If you just like the "experience" of shopping go to Caesar's World.

2 problems:

The Las Vegas Hilton isolated and is away from every interesting place, so you will not be able to just walk to places of interest. Angel, tell the parents that you will need a taxi allowance, or you will be stuck there at the hotel and there is not much to do at that hotel after 2 days at the most.

Vegas is not very kid friendly really, so you will be bored out of your mind by day 4.

Angel, here's a website about stuff to do with kids in Vegas.
http://www.lasvegaskids.net/las_vegas_attractions/las_vegas_attractions_landing.htm

Jim is right, the Las Vegas Hilton is off the strip, so you'll need a car to go anywhere -- you can't walk.

07-18-2006, 01:59 PM
I did not want to be the first to rain on the parade, but since others now have-- It's hard work to entertain two small kids in a hotel for that long. That's why they hired someone to watch the kids. I have several friends who take a baysitter on vacation. They go out to beautiful dinners and the babysitter sits in the hotel room watching Cartoon Network and eating room service with the kids. You might want to clarify exactly what it is they expect from you so you won't be disappointed.

Jekka
07-18-2006, 02:03 PM
Hey, do you all think it will be hard to entertain kids in Vegas?

Kids are kids and they're easily entertained. I'm sure she'll be fine with them. Tllong is right, sometimes a pool is all you need.

You can't beat that bus. It will take you just about anywhere you want to go, and you can get a daypass for $5 for adults (I don't know how much it costs for kids) and you can ride it anywhere it goes and as many times as you want. Also, if you get over to the strip, there's a monorail that runs from Mandalay Bay to the Sahara. There is a TON of stuff to do with kids in Vegas. In fact, the only things they can't do are the casinos and the adult shows.

:lol Seems like that, huh?

No, I am just telling her the truth. This is probably the worst area to go with kids as a baby sitter. Kids are treated like 2nd class citizens there and you can not even stop for 1 second in the casino with a kid in tow, or they will tell you to move along. There are perverts and scum bags everywhere and you have to watch the kids like every second or they can disappear just like that, so you have to be careful where ever you go with them.

furry_spurry

Kids are kids and they are easily entertained? Have you ever entertained a 4 year old and a 7 year old for 8 days away from home? The 4 year old will be tired before you know it and whine all afternoon. The 7 year old will want to do completely different things from the 4 year because he's not a "baby". It's even worse if one is a boy and one is a girl. Like I said- I just want her to be realistic and have a clear understanding of what these people expect. She can't even be sure they are going to turn her loose with two kids that young all alone in Vegas. I could be wrong, but I know that I NEVER would. I don't know these people, but she needs to know exactly what she is agreeing to. SHE isn't going on vacation. THEY are. She is there to work for them. Also, don't forget- Las Vegas in early September = 100 degree afternoons. How much running around do you think small kids can take in that heat?

As for jealous- no thanks. Been to Vegas.

you can not even stop for 1 second in the casino with a kid in tow, or they will tell you to move along.

You can't do that in ANY casino or they will tell you to move along. I have seen them literally chase out people just passing through with kids (almost all casinos have a way to get to the elevators without going through the casino, but some people insist on it) in every casino I have been in, every time I have been to Vegas. I was in a casino once (can't remember the name, but it's a small one between Imperial Palace and the Flamingo) and the security guards grabbed a woman with a little boy walking through the casino; they were going to the back where there's a food court on the ground floor because it's one of the few places around there they could get ice cream. They escorted her back there and the guy hung around there until they were ready to go...I know all this because I was going in there for ice cream, too... :oops . That place also has a great gourmet chocolate shop.

Some of the older hotels in Las Vegas are just fine and are quite beautiful. Some of them are much more charming than the newer, high-tech, star-wars-looking ones. Just because a place is worn and tarnished does not mean it's not a nice place. One of the most fun trips I had to Vegas, I stayed at the New Frontier. I know a lot of people don't like it, but the location is fantastic, and I LOVED the hotel. It's a great place to stay on a first trip. But, I think you can have fun in Vegas no matter where you stay.

That may be true for adults with short attention spans and more money than they know what to do with, Jim. But, I think kids could spend several hours a day there for several days and not get too bored. Quit being a wet blanket.

You are talking about Harrahs.

The old hotels are nice, I am not saying that they are not, but as far as pools, the new ones were built when Vegas tried to attract families, so they are fun for kids.

Yes, Harrahs. I could not remember exactly where we turned in off the strip, but that's it.

As for the pools, to kids, a pool is a pool. They just want to get in and get wet and splash around a bit. They don't care what it looks like.

And I think you guys are selling Angel short. She knows she's going to Vegas to work. She's not going to party. But, she will see and learn so much. Give her a break. As for not turning her loose in Vegas with kids? WTF??? That's what she's going for, to take care of these people's children! She's not a teeny-bopper, she's a responsible adult. If they didn't trust her with their children, they would not ask her to go. I think you guys need to step back and give Angel a break here.

Thank you . That is all I was saying. She needs to clarify exactly what is expected. They could be very generous and only need her a little of the time there, and she could have lots of free time. Or she could be expected to watch the kids 24 hours a day for 8 days. It really depends if they are just going for the conference- how extensive of a conference,... or if they are staying a few extra days and having a family vacation, too. Like I said, I know people who use baby sitters to act like they took their kids on a trip, but they rarely see them.

Oh, and you might want to ask about the room arrangements. Is there a huge multi-bedroom suite? Are their separate rooms and are you getting your own room? Or are the parents getting a room and you get to stay with the kids? :lol

Give her a break???

I have been to Vegas over 40 times and I know every place to go to have fun. I know every hotel backwards and forwards. I have been with kids and w/o kids and I know that Angel is excited, but I am telling her what to tell the parents so they will not take advantage of her.

She needs to let it be known that she needs some days off and needs money to tak the kids in hotel limos or taxis and not on buses because the buses suck and it will be 112 degrees at that time of year and she does not want to be standing outside in that heat waiting for a crowded bus to show up with 2 whiny kids in tow.

I know what I am talking about. Besides Kori, I probably know Vegas better than everyone else in here, so I have some good advise and inside info to share with her, so MYOB.

There is a HUGE difference between having someone watch your kids in a hotel and what some of the people here are proposing. A young, inexperienced, rather naive woman- running around Vegas with a 4 year old and a 7 year old. Sorry if I have concerns. As Jim said, people will take advantage.

Kori Ellis
07-18-2006, 03:12 PM
The key is that they get her a rental car or daily cab/limo fare.

There's a lot of things she can do with the kids, but they aren't at the LV Hilton. So they need to make sure she gets a car or a car allowance. Also, Jim is right about setting the guidelines. Find out if you are responsible for the kids 24 hours a day, or 8 hours a day. If it's 24 hours a day, I know you'll still do it and like it, Angel, but you should get more money for that ... a lot more money.

Sounds like Typical Jimcs behavior...:lol

I was not meaning to sound arrogant, but you were accusing us of pissing in Angel's cereal, and that is simply not true. I offer wisdom (when you are an old fart you get this) :) and my only agenda here is to get Angel to go into this with open eyes and acquire some inside info that she can use.

Yes he does and he loves it. He thinks he knows everything.Just look at his title. :rolleyes

The truth is: Jim doesn't know shit about Vegas.

You can only learn so much about a city from the links (losing!) and the casino (also losing!). He certainly did not have our kids in tow for those activities.
And I will never forgive the time I caught him breaking open our kid's piggy bank at 10 pm to place a bet on a Maryland game. Pathetic.

Angel, here's a website about stuff to do with kids in Vegas.
http://www.lasvegaskids.net/las_vegas_attractions/las_vegas_attractions_landing.htm

Jim is right, the Las Vegas Hilton is off the strip, so you'll need a car to go anywhere -- you can't walk.

Thanks for the info, Kori. :)

They are getting us rail passes so we can go wherever. The father also mentioned taxi's I believe.

angel_luv
07-18-2006, 07:31 PM
Whoa you guys!

That was a lot to come home and take in after working all day.

I get paid $100 dollars a day.

I will have a rail pass, a debit card, and cash so the kids and I can go do stuff.

We will bring games and books etc, for when we want to lounge in the hotel.

The way I look at is I would have to be working full time somewhere for that week.

This is an opportunity for me to see somewhere new and take a few limo rides at no expense to me.

The kids and I get along so watching them is no problem. The parents mentioned that I would have some free time; I am not concerned about it.

All I know is that I have been praying about what I should be doing and God sent me this opportunity.

I am confident that all will go well and everyone will have a safe good time.

The suite ( I don't know what else to call it) has four rooms- one for the parents, one for the kids, one for me, and an extra.

Angel, that sounds great. It sounds like they have put a lot of thought into this and are planning well. You are going to have so much fun! I have never seen Vegas to be the dangerous and dirty city that some have presented here. The bad things you see in Vegas, you can find on the streets of San Antonio (or any big city, for that matter). Just be cautious and careful (but not fearful) and you'll be fine. I think this is a wonderful opportunity for you! Enjoy it!

It took about six stores yesteday, but I found two swim suits I am very happy with.

The first is chocolate brown with four semi wide strips of baby blue ribbon like material that goes diagonally across the chest and ab area.
It is hard to explain but it is very unique and pretty and gives the illusion that I am smaller than I am.

The other is a black tankini with dainty iridescent beads in the shape of little flowers. The pattern goes across the top chest area and along the back of the bottom part.
It reminds me of something that one of the classic starlets, like Audrey Hepburn, would have worn.

If you are doing any gambling, take my advice and hit up the Imperial Palace. Only place on the strip with $5 craps and their odds on all games are very good. Vegas locals type place.

I was just looking at Vegas hotel pictures to see what I want to see either with the kids or when I have time off.

I want to go to:

1)The Bellagio Hotel Conservatory
2)Flamingo Hotel- to see the waterfalls outside near the buffet
3)MGM Grand - Lion Habitat
4)Mirage Atrium
5)New York New York- just to see the outside really
6)Paris- the Arc and Eiffel Tower
7)Venetian Lobby
8)Hard Rock Cafe Guitar

The only disappointment for me was that Treasure Island has "upgraded" and terminated their kid friendly Pirates exhibits to go all trendy.
I am sad. I was all pumped about seeing the Pirates.
:lol
Mandalay Bay - Shark Reef
Mirage - Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat (or is that what you were referring to when you said the Atrium?)
Excalibur - Merlin's show
M&M Factory
Circus Circus! (my first Vegas experience) :)

Just a couple other ideas in case you didn't see these ...

When I lived in LA and my mom dragged us to LV, she gave us a bucket of quarters at Circus Circus and let us run wild playing the kiddy games upstairs, and always made sure someone kept an eye on us. This was like 20 yrs ago, though I don't know if you can still do that. Either way, I am with Slomo- what's the point of taking your kids so they can be in a hotel all day?

Vegas isn't the good old sex, drugs, liquor, and gambling haven for adults that it once was (oh, how I miss the mob...). Now it's fucking Disney Land on steroids. People take their kids all the time. It's just another sign that the apocolypse is upon us.

That was pretty much my childhood Vegas experience, though we usually stuck to the Excalibur instead. Got less and less fun each time we made the trip.

Yeah, everytime we went that bucket of quarters went faster and faster as the price of games to win a cheesy stuffed animal just continued to increase. Sad thing is, I have not been to LV since I was a kid. All my gambling has been in New Orleans, the Texas Treasure cruises or online. I need to go.

I've been to Vegas a bunch, but I hate gambling there. Not a big fan of gambling in general, though. It gets too boring.

Also, the frequent trips to get stuck at the midway with a bucket of quarters as a child kind of took away the mystique.

Angel again.

To clarify:

The parents are here direting a baby expo- so in their slight defense, they are not off partying.

However, I have only seen the parents about four hours since we landed.

It is a bad situation logistics wise. I am not at all confident that I could find the parents quickly if I needed too.

Last night I waited up for them as long as I could stay awake- around 11:30. I had no idea when they would make it back so I got up at 6:30 this morning and waited at the common entrance to catch them on their way out.

They saw me and asked if Jeremy was up. I said yes and they asked me to close the door so they could sneak out.
I followed them and asked if there was anything I needed to know for the day.
The mom said no. The dad suddenly remembered about the banquet I am supposed to dress the kids for and bring them too- tonight.
If I hadn't asked, I would have not known I needed to be there.
That is the most interaction/ instruction I have had.
Basically I was given a monorail pass and money and was told to have fun.
All in all a major shock to my system.

It wasn't that this was an awful trip. I have managed and have had some fun. But it has been very difficult- enough so that I know better than to do it again.

Whoosh! Kids asleep! 3 points for Super Soccer Mom!

I have seen some fun things. I went all the way to the top of the Eiffel tower, rode a gondola, had dinner at Benehana's ( a first for me. Two words- steak and shrimp!)

Last night Misti came with me and the kids to the Follies- semi- clothed version ( sorry guys! :lol) There was the funniest comedian there- Michael Holly. If you ever get a chance- go hear him. I cried I laughed so hard.

I officially love Kodak. It has been a lifesaver with the kids. The youngest ( 3) takes pictures of the most random things like seat cushions.

I saw the lions at MGM, the fountains at the Bellagio, the garden/ pool at the Venetian, ( I want to go back there w/ o kids.)

By the way, being a nanny- great birth control!

Guess who called to hire me for Vegas 2007?

It was a flattering offer because 1) they thought I did a good job and welcomed me back 2) they said they would hire me help and to name the hours I wanted.

To my surprise, my first instinct was to accept the offer.
But I thought about it and realized my desires to go were all the wrong and unrealistic.
Also, it would have been difficult to get the required time off at the mall- might be a request they would penalize me schedule wise for even making.

Even though my reason for turning down the job was valid ( I can't risk losing my current position at the mall for a once a year 11 day temp job) , I still felt really bad having to tell the family no.

When I called the parents back with my decision, I was super and sincerely apologetic about my not being able to go.
To which, all the father has to say in response was, " Oh well. Have a good one." Click.

"Oh well." !!!!!!!!
All the long hours, blisters, and tears ( the kids and mine) from that last trip and all I get now is an " Oh well" :wtf

Just terrible.
And sort of funny too. :lol

Re reading this thread is interesting.
I was so blindly optimistic in the beginning and then reality went and changed everything.
For the record, all of you who said the trip was a bad idea were right.
Luckily, I had enough fun to where I 1) do not entirely regret having taken the job, even though it was a very hard one and 2) want to go back to Vegas on an actual vacation.

Aw! Thanks.

To be fair, for the record, the Father wasn't mean on the phone- told me to have a nice day and all before hanging up.
It was just that an " Oh, we wish you could go" would have set a lot better with me than an " Oh well."

However, I am grateful for the " Oh well" since it confirmed that I made the right decision.

I am sure that was much appreciated.
A break is necessary no matter how good the kid.
Also, more importantly, kids, little ones especially, need to see their parents.
The kids I watched did really well since the no parent situation in our case had to be even harder on them than it was on me.
At least I could reason not to take the parents absense as a personal rejection. A six and three year old can't.

I'm going to be in Vegas the weekend of the 20th with Mrs. Chopper, and again 3 weeks later with one of my old college buddies. I'm intending to make a thread comparing and contrasting the Vegas experience under those two scenarios. :cooldevil
